Wide angle lenses

I know that their must be differnt type of wide angle lenses to purchase. Just wondering about reading up on the differnt ones pros and cons. Bottom line the wife said she would like to get me a wide angle lense I looked on cannons site to see a variety told her off the top of my head cost abouT $1,500 She gave me that deer in a head light look . told her their was a variety of them out their but was hoping on maybe a cheaper one out their but figured i needed to research and learn more about the differnt ones.maybe a site that showed pic of differnt types of wide angle lenses as the numbers on the specs of them are greek writing still being a novice

I would take your camera to a REAL camera store and play with a few to get an idea of what field of view you are looking for. The store I get most of my gear from lets me take them outside and shoot so I can you the colors and contrast the lens has.
Once you see what you like then you can start the search.
What lenses do you have now?
I have mostly all Nikons, but also have a few long zooms from Sigma. I don't use the long zooms 400-600mm enough to spend the money Nikon wants.
My favorite wide angle lens is my 17-55. It is tack sharp and is a f2.8 which makes it great in any light. The other one I (play) with is the 10.5, but it takes some lens learning to get the pictures to look right. I shoot a Nikon D300s which has the crop factor.

My wife bought me a bunch of lenses not knowing what she was getting.None of them fit not sure how much she paid for them. but also have to maybe find a place where i could trade them for a wide angle or sell them.Jusr collecting dust on the box here don't know if their just junk either theirs a samigon 2.0 X video telephoto high resoulution AF,Kenloc-Mc-tor1;4.5 80- 200, kenloc1;2.8 135mm, kenlock1;2.8 35mm i beleive their for a film not digital Don't fit my camera anyway wrong mount

Ok so you want to stay under 18 or around there. The three companies to look at are Sigma,Tamron and Tokina. These will give you the best price for a lens like this I think.
Sigma is a good company and I have a few of their lenses. They have an 8-16 that gets good reviews, and a 12-24 also is high talked about.
Tamron also has a 12-24 you can go look at.
Tokina has a 11-16 everyone says is great, sharp and good color.
I have not priced any of these yet but for the Tokina. But from what I am reading on the Tokina, this is my next lens to play with. For my Nikon it is around $700.
Hope this gets you started. Let me know what you think. I would still go to a store and put one one your camera just to see what you think about that view.

The 17-55 is going to be a chuck of change, but worth it. I love mine. The 2 lenses I use the most are the 17-55 and my 28-300.
Both are Nikon lenses though, so they were pricy. :(

I appreciate all the info :thumbup: typed in Sigma 8-16 beside showing prices, showed photos of what it can do.prices were around $700. Picture refrences for me are good to see

Having a Crop Sensor body, getting a wide angle lens is a little harder. A nice little write up at http://www.bobatkins.com/photography/tutorials/crop_sensor_cameras_and_lenses.html talks about this..

Keep in mind, if you put on an EF lens onto your APS-C framed body, then you should multiply the mm by 1.6 to get a rough feel on how that lens will behave on your camera body.. Getting a 10mm EF lens, will have a FOV of 16mm. You already have a 18mm lens (kit) I take it??
