Exactly why the Canon fanboys try so hard to discredit DXO, some are terribly fanatical about it!

There is also the laboratory nature of DXO to consider. If you take all your photos in a studio under controlled conditions, then by all means rely on DXO. If you take shots out in the real world, you need more input regarding behavior in the field.

Ok, I shoot mostly landscapes, some family pics etc...my question is I"m considering upgrading my NIkon D50 to a Nikon D3300. (I don't care about GPS or WiFi). Would I be misguided buying a lower end camera but buying a more expensive (~$1300) F/4 70-200 lens? I keep reading that the glass is more important than the camera. Thanks for the input.

For your uses (landscapes and family pics) the lens is probably a better investment. If you were taking action (sports or BIF) the body "might" be more important.

Once you have a couple good lenses then the relative value of another good lens over a newer body begins to narrow.

I agree, having a second body has advantages.

My wife said I would have to do without those advantages.

Oh! You are talking about a CAMERA body!

And that's another part of the overall equation and decision making process; faster shutter with bigger aperture.
So it's VR/size and weight/max aperture/shooting technique/price/etc., etc., etc., that matter. Nikon alone has produced a whole bunch of different 85mm lenses, priced from $100 to $2000. But I will find the one that's perfect for me. :-D

The GAS solution: buy them all!!!!

As an older person with less steady hands, the shorter faster primes allow me to shoot at faster speeds than the standard 1/focal length rule. a 35mm lens shot at 1/500 secs will kill camera shake. Only problem is low light, of course. That having been said If I have booze on board 1/1000 wont help.

Hand held in low light is where stabilization really can help a shorter focal length. For instance the new 10-18 Canon wide angle has stabilization to balance its not so open apeture.

I know you are asking about primes but the issue is the same. You can pick up a stop or two with stabilization. Night street scenes come to mind as an application.

I could not agree with you more; just in today's forum there is a thread entitled "SX50" and another one "I have a question" I never open such non descriptive threads. Also, someone else has suggested that the forum should provide more detailed guide lines for the titles; in my opinion, its not necessary to go to that length; you have provided some excellent examples above as to how to present the Title; it almost comes natural and uncomplicated.

Thanks.

"SX50" is not completely useless as a title (but comes REAL close). But “I have a question”, YIKES!!!

Do you like any of these pictures? I was fooling around one afternoon a while back with an old Canon A10 1.3MP camera that has virtually no manual settings. You can't even set an ISO.
I'm not saying they are prize winners or anything, it's just like I said I was fooling around and felt like going a bit 'old school'. :-)

Very nice and very post-card-able. Esp 1,2 and 4. 3 seems to lack a focal point but I think that was the camera not holding focus.

<edit> And then you added some more which I also like. The one with the bell pulls you in at the bottom and then up to the bell. Very nice.

I recommend a tilt-shift type lens to control inherent distortions. A 24mm PC or 35mm PC lens may be the best choices, both are full frame as I don't believe anyone makes any tilt-shift lenses in crop sensor specific sizing.
And any tilt-shift lens will always be manual focusing.

The tilt-shift is the BEST lens for photographing buildings generically. If you can’t afford one, then a nice wide angle corrected in PP. Of course if your purpose in shooting buildings is not getting a nice accurate photo of the building, then some other lens might be better.

What is your intent with these photos? Selling real estate? Artistic interpretation? Capturing memories while traveling?

Are you talking about sky scrapers or individual homes?

With respect - I have seen excellent, winning pictures from cheap cameras and also seen rubbish pictures from cameras in the thousands of dollars range.

if you look at the other cheap camera challenges you will see fantastic results from cheap cameras and - to my mind - proves that the person operating the shutter button is more important to a good picture than the actual camera.

I know there is at least one award winning photographer who has been approached by someone with the statement 'I have purchased a camera just like yours so that I can produce pictures like yours'!
With respect - I have seen excellent, winning pict... (show quote)

But what Joer seems to understand and you do not, is what all Very Serious People (VSPs) know.

And they know this because ALL the other VSPs say so.

If you have high standards, this trumps talent, creativity and all that other liberal far-der-all.

It’s STANDARDS and PEDIGREE and EQUIPMENT COST and BEING ABLE TO USE BIG WORDS as well as SHOUTING LOUDER THAN ANYONE ELSE until the talented creeps using cheap stuff and depending on talent slink away into the night that really counts!!!!

Part of the problem:

"New topic in the section "XXXXXXXXXX"

Title:"

Not a whole lot of guidance there. Maybe there should be a note about what to include in the title and how to select a section.

Any ideas on the language of such a note?

I have been to Berlin several times since the Reunification, and am going there again this October. After reunification, the government spent a fortune rebuilding the former eastern side, and it is now an architectural masterpiece - amazing buildings. Also, the Tier Garten is a a huge park, kind of like their Central Park, with walking paths, a zoo, lakes, etc. Also great jazz clubs. Go to the restored Reichstag Building. Have fun!

Thanks

The spot does show up on the photos (light background). I can't see it on the lens (eyesight not great).

long out of warranty

I have no idea how t check the sensor. This is point and shoot camera.

If it's a point and shoot that is more than 5 years old, repair is probably more than replacement.
