I have a trip planned to Cooke City Montana the first week of October. I am considering the purchase of a Canon 7D to go along with the Canon 50D I presently own.
My question. Will there be a significant learning curve between the two cameras? I shoot all my photos in manual mode and have a good knowledge of the basics in photography.

Probably not. I still have both cameras and did not have much of a problem. One thing to keep in mind however is that the 7DII will be coming out soon. You may want to wait and take a look that one first. There may be some additional discounts though if there are a lot of the 7D's still in inventory and you prefer that one.

I agree entirely with Chris's response, although the 7D Mk II may not be released in time for your trip. Also, you may begin to find bargain pricing on the current 7D and you might also consider finding a good value in a used 7D - but you must shop carefully.

I heard that they were coming out with a new one but based on the initial costs I have read about, its a little pricey for my use.
B&H has the 7D on sale at $999.00 right now.
I guess I could also sell my 50D to them to offset some of the cost of the new 7D when I return.

The 7D is a brilliant general purpose camera and great with wildlife and sport, and without doubt a snip at the moment, as for usability some time ago I went from a 500D and bought a 5D3 on my way to a holiday and picked up the basic functions straight away with no problems, most Canons follow a pattern and the high end ones only expand on that, the big wheel for instance really is a brilliant tool, I would go for it and start getting more better control over your pictures, --the one thing I would suggest you consider, If you do a lot of landscapes I would think about a full frame camera, and if a 5D3 is out of your range have a good look at the 6D?

Have fun which ever way you go,

Geoff

Sodacreek,

I have a 7D that I am considering selling. It's in excellent condition. I also have the Canon battery grip and several batteries. PM me if you are interested.
Regards,
Bob

I have the 40D,50D and 60D series. I loved my 60D but had the 70error
And Canon wanted $450. To repair.so I bought the 7D because of the price
With the Camera and the sigma 150-500 mm lens, it is a little heavy.

I capture wild life and ithe moon, it really does an excellect Job.

Hi SodaCreek. I was browsing through the UHH forum and noticed your note about an interest in a 7D. Are you interested in a slightly used 7D? I purchased mine in 2012 and a few months later I purchased a 6D which I've used exclusively since. My 7D body has been "resting" ever since. I've decided to sell it. I would include the cards I have, of course. I paid $1500 for this great camera and will sell it for $750. It really is a "like new" camera. We can email or do a phone call if you'd like. Hope to hear from you. Linda

I have no experience with 50D, but cant see much gain to you with 7D with that 50 of yours. If you go for full frame camera some you lenses may not fit to the full frame camera !
I am selling EF-S 10-20mm f/3.5-4 USM lens for that reason it is perfect on 7D, and SLR Rebels, but do not fit to my 5D MarkIII.
I shoot with 7D with 5D MarkIII. Since 5D is full frame camera it is advance camera on portraits, landscapes and stills.
7D on sport and wildlife is a excellent camera to have.
There is new 7D coming soon, but it will be coming as well with big price tag.

I have a 50D and a 7D, they operate very similarly and you should be able to transition from one to the other and then back again with little problem.

I agree with most of the replies. I went from a 40d to the 7d and there isn't much difference in the controls. YouTube is a great source of information as well. Have a great trip! Cheers.

If you are going to Montana I suggest you contact Hog member MT Shooter. He has a camera shop in Shepherd, Mt. He sells and rents equipment to photographers visiting the area and can probably give you some useful advice about your destination. If there is a specific lens or camera that you need for your trip he can most likely take care of you. Very honest. Very knowledgeable.

Yeah but something weird is going on with Canon. I was about to recommend a refurb 7D from Canon Direct but when I just checked there they had the price of a refurb at $1,200 which is $200 more then a new one from B&H.

A couple weeks ago I believe Canon had refurb 7Ds for around $800 or less.

They gotta pay for that drop in lens prices they just announced.
