Not so. My D5300 has built-in Wi-Fi. I've already tested it in anticipation of a major trip and it works great with my LG G4 Android smartphone.

My other thought: Without context, the photo is very funny. But we don't know the context. Is she media on assignment? Just a groupie with a large budget uploading to social media? A PR person getting different perspectives?

Frankly, I am happy to have started part of my day with a good chuckle. Thanks for that.

Great shots and great memories for us, as we were there in July. But, be warned if you're not used to the altitude and it's hot. I did better with Vitamin Water than regular water. Good shoes/boots are a must.

JCam,

Those are kivas. They are ceremonial chambers and meeting rooms for members of the clans, or families. At Mesa Verde, the open ones are left that way, in part, so visitors can see inside and so they are preserved as discovered. The NPS, in association with the Hopi (mainly), has restored a few of them so visitors can enter and partially experience being inside. In today's pueblos, the kivas are off-limits to non-tribal members and visitors. The kivas remain sacred places and visitor etiquette to today's pueblos calls for not being too inquisitive. I know of one "fully restored" kiva available for visitors is at Salmon Ruins near Farmington, NM.

The National Park Service helps preserve the United States' most precious natural resources. It is staffed with some of the finest people I've ever met. I wish the federal government would fund our parks, monuments and other similar properties more substantially.

Repleo,

Well said and thank you for posting this reminder. I’ve been using this pass for 12 years and love it. A month ago we returned from a two-week trip that included Zion, Bryce and Grand Canyon national parks.

We also support our state parks with an annual pass.

Those natural resources are precious and we don’t do nearly enough to preserve them.

Verizon offers a 30-day international plan with (I think) 100MB data. But, with Wi-Fi so ubiquitous, I'm planning to access that for uploads to the cloud. I'll use the data for other stuff. I can't get to my info now, but I thought it reasonable.

May I share some information for those of us who have been orphaned by the death of Eye-Fi?

I bought a Toshiba Air recently to use in our Canon Powershot G15 in anticipation of an international trip. I have decided to not take a laptop and wanted some way to move photos to the mobile smartphone from which they will go to the cloud and to an attached USB.

I tried it with a couple of shots in the backyard and it worked fine, but we had a successful robust test two days ago. My wife took the G15 on a hike at a nearby canyon and came back with about 30 photos. The devices paired easily and the files transferred fairly quickly.

I learned that I will need to configure the setup to save the transferred files to the SD card so larger sets of files won’t overwhelm the internal memory, but that is a nominal effort.

While Eye-Fi may be walking back part of its decision to brick its cards, it isn’t clear to what extent they will function without glitches, risk or disaster.

I’ll stick with Toshiba Air for now. Usual disclaimers apply.

Free ferry across the river to Algiers.

That ferry wasn't free in June. I think I paid $2 each way.

Window Rock, Ariz., is the capital of the Navajo Nation, the largest Indian reservation in the United States. Past a warren of low-slung government buildings is a small park with the Window Rock itself and a memorial to the Navajo Code Talkers and the tribal members who made the ultimate sacrifice to defend our nation.

According to both the NOLA.com and Advocate website, New Orleans is not under water. The flooding is impacting Baton Rouge, Denham Springs and Covington.

Another NOLA native chiming in.

Was in New Orleans as recently as June and agree you should be very aware of your surroundings. The St. Louis Cemeteries are classic, but the No. 1 is only available with a tour. The Archdiocese of New Orleans owns it and it was being overrun and a bit abused. But it’s worth it.

Go to the foot of Canal Street and take the ferry ($2/each way) to Algiers. You’ll get some great views of the city from the river; and, of course great shots of river traffic. Get off the ferry and get right back on. There’s nothing else on the West Bank at the landing worth seeing.

If you like boats, head out to Lakeshore Drive and the West End. If you’re there on a weekend, you might catch some sailboat races on Lake Pontchartrain. If you like miniature trains, go to City Park (you can reach it on one of the streetcar lines).

Beyond that, others have posted good recommendations, so I won’t duplicate them. If you have special interests, let us know and maybe we’ll come up with specific suggestions.

And don’t forget to laissez les bon temps rouler.

My "wow" was on two levels. Love the processing but the perspective just blew me away and would have done so without editing. I was there in 2013 and none of my shots came close to showing that perspective.
