I agree with all the above. I'm a Nikon DSLR person with too many expensive lenses and too old to change at this point. I did try a Fuji XT-1, but had such bad service from Fuji with the sensor failed, I will never buy another. However, I did really enjoy the histogram display in the view finder and similarly seeing the exposure I would be getting directly in the image is was viewing. I also enjoyed the film like style I could capture in settings, not to mention single color isolation/capture etc. I don't see that happening in the fading DSLR tech anytime soon. So this old dog remains very happy with image quality of the current DSLR's.

Very nice rendering of these iconic scenes, made even better by your timing of the fall colors. I enjoyed your composition of Oxbow Bend/Mt Moran, named after the famous western painter of Shoshone Falls and the Yellowstone Grand Canyon, leading to the Park's creation by Congress for which he was paid $10,000 each. No matter how many times I pass by, I just can't resist stopping for the shot again. Interestingly, Moran never saw his namesake, passing to the West side of the Tetons only once.

All good comments. I have the 80-400. It was sub-optimal until it quit working. Sent it to Tech repair, near B&H. It returned working better than new. Sharp and reasonably fast. I think the essence of this issue is accurately understanding it's purpose in your photography. Its a great walk around lens for subjects reasonably close, but clearly falls off at distance. I've had a Tamron 150-600 and found it too slow for BIF, missing as many as 50% while on the Amazon. I was not happy. After researching the issue, again I bought the 80-400 and it worked for its purpose. I have a 200-400 and a 600. They both do the job for a dedicated task at distance, both too heavy for a walk around. There a very good reviews of the Sigma 150-600, and I think better than the Nikon 200-500 in both lens/image quality and durability. Good luck.

I had a 3800 and hadn't used it for over 3 years. Took it to the repair shop in Portland, Or. who had cleaned it before. Initially he told me I was nuts for trying and wanted $50.00 to even look at it. Clogged of course and I'm sure, dried. I had enough ink in the cartridges to give it a go. I did and combined with some old cartridges he had lying around, we finally got it to work. I can't tell you how many cycles it took, but still using it 4 years later. I would not spend any money to replace the head. By the time you factor in new inks, and the head, you will have exceeded the next difference between a new printer/technology and better color that comes with a supply of ink and the price of new printer.

Greats pics demonstrating the hard effects of weather on the buildings and land. It must have been a hard life just to survive. Do you know anything of the life and culture of those pioneers? Were they ranches, some farmers, how far from any sort of settlements??

Not sure I fully understand your photo/catalog use. I personally back up to 3 external hard drives of my LR LIBRARY by having them hooked up to my computer one at a time while my primary photo/LR external drive with the prime LR Library. I have about 100,000 images that take about 24 hours to transfer the first time to each HD using the Time Machine feature of my Mac's. Every back up hence takes just a few minute to update the new photos. Then I have my entire system of computers and photos on a 3 HD, each labelled Libraries 1,2 & 3.
Getting caught up in different catalogs requires careful care not to get confused. I like to think of LR being a brick and mortor library with all my information in the card catalog. So I'm creating a back up building in case the first one burns down, I've got everything duplicated in a distant building. Copy your library, not just the card catalog.

We all know you can't buy speed by upgrading to the newest pro circuit bicycle any more than you can improve you photographic skills by buying the latest camera unless it offers significant upgrades like frames/sec and better tracking for action. Megapixels +/- pending subjects. The winner of the Oregonian newspaper photo contest several years ago was captured with a disposable plastic camera competing with thousands of contestants. This query is about what I thought was a legitimate issue, one that I too, researched just 6 months ago. The D500 is a great camera. Should have kept mine, sold it several years ago because it was sitting on the self. Dumb!!! "Can't we all just get along?" There is no need for "snarky" comments. If you are sitting on a burr, just keep you comments to yourself until you can be happy again. There is enough anger in our culture, we don't need it here.

These are great responses, covering the gamet of what BW photography is really all about. BW conversion is the last step of many including significant attention to color grading. I would invite you to check out Blake Rudis f64 Youtube B/W tutorial.

I'm not so much an aficionado of railroads, but the Ely, Nevada site is very impressive. Several operating engines, cars and each winter they hold a special photographers weekend. They let you climb all over the engines, free reign of the workshops, hook up some cars and take you up to the old mine and the next day out onto the valley. Lots of stops along the way for photo ops, steam coming out of the workshop in the morning as the engine pulls out and then coming out of tunnels along the way. Like I say, its the real deal. The caboose has a copula to climb up into and shoot. The winter works well because the cold weather enhances the steam effect.

Depends on your budget and activity plans. I've stayed at the super 8, good value. I have also stayed at the Big Rock Inn, elevator, big rooms, good value, but I just sleep there and not very long at that either. I"m in the park!!! The Mammoth Hotel is great, but 30's style, located where all the park info and action starts. Don't forget to check out the Yellowstone Forever Institute, located near the Arch just before the Entrance. You can get all kinds of useful info on recent sites for wolves etc.
