Sigma has never made a 10-22mm lens. Canon has made a 10-22mm for some years. Sigma has made several different 10-20mm lenses.

HOWEVER, these are "EF-S" and "DC" lenses for use on "crop sensor" cameras.

Canon 5D Mark IV is a full frame camera and requires full frame lenses (Canon EF, Sigma DG, etc.)

A Canon 10-22mm will not even fit onto the 5D-series cameras. The lens uses a modified EF-S mount designed to prevent that.

Sigma 10-20mm DC will fit, but will vignette very heavily and might interfere with the mirror movement in the camera and cause damage to the camera. Sigma has never made a DG version 10-20mm. They have all been DC "crop cameras only".

Ultra wide zooms I would recommend for use on Canon 5DIV are:

- Canon EF 11-24mm f/4L USM... the widest of all.... $2699.
- Sigma DG 12-24mm f/4 Art... also super wide... $1599.
- Sigma DG 14-24mm f/2.8 Art... $1299.
- Tamron SP 15-30mm f/2.8 G2... $1299.
- Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM.... $999.
- Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L USM III.... $1999.

Lower priced, though not as sharp...
- Tokina 16-28mm f/2.8... $499.
- Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM... $749.
- Tamron 17-35mm f/2.8-4... $599
- Tokina 17-35mm f/4... $429.

Some of the above lenses have convex front elements that prevent using standard filters on them. Oversize filters and special holders may be available, but are costly and bulky.

Prices are U.S. $ for new... probably can find some of these for less used. Be cautious buying off eBay. I'd only consider sellers with lots of positive feedback and a reasonable return policy.

Thanks for all that. The Sigma is indeed a 10-20 but has been misrepresented on eBay as NOT a DC, and for EF. I am aware of the difference between DG and DC, between EF and EF-S and Tamron's Di 1 and Di II lenses.
I have another APS-C camera, a 7DmkII and the Sigma would fit that but I already have a Tamron 10-24 for that camera.
I have instructed the eBay seller to void this Sigma transaction as he/she/they have misrepresented the lens as being for full-frame when I am being reliably informed it cannot be. Previously I thought it might be but as you have pointed out, Sigma have never made a FF version.
Provided that a lens is correctly advertised, I am able to select correctly - it is only when it is not labelled accurately.

Your list of recommendeds is interesting and will occupy me for a while. Since I travel extensively I often find my wide-angle sitting on the front for days, particularly in older cities with narrow streets. I spent 6 years in the Med on my boat and photographing old stuff is my main interest (with the odd Geocache added in).

The Canon sells for about $3200 AUD here, so around the same as your price. The Sigma DG at half the price is attractive, too.

Back to work, and thanks for the information. BTW, I just got a pop-up on the side of my screen that the seller has responded to me re the mis-labelled Sigma.

The Sigma is a crop frame lens and the 28-300 is a very expensive/heavy niche lens .......just sayn'

Thank you for that. Have advised the seller that since it was not advertised as a DC, if it is a DC I want the transaction voided. Many on eBay are listed as EX DC. This one was listed as EX for an EF mount. His problem if it's misrepresented and I'll go get another. Thanks for the heads up. I simply assumed it was a FF version of that lens.

Many thanks for all the advice received on first the Canon 5D IV, then on the tripod and finally on the lenses.

After all the deliberation and assessing, I pulled the trigger on my rearrangement of gear and bought the Canon 5D IV, a Vanguard AltaPro 264AO, the Canon EF L 28-300 and a Sigma EX 10-22. (the Sigma is 2nd hand and was cheap enough for me to buy just to see how it is)

I will have some later questions on a couple of topics but enough for now as I reorganise my storage space (I like everything to be where it stands alone and can be readily seen. I hate rummaging for stuff)
Thank you all again for your assistance.

Thank you for that. I thought i was looking at the DG, not the DC.
I like the wide range zoom because I can then travel with only 2 lenses. My travel is active so i like as little as possible on me. I will absorb your suggestions and consider in detail. Thank you.

In one you are comparing an APS-C lens against a full frame. Apples v Oranges. In both cases the Canon is faster at the long end of the ranges and these two Canons hold fast apertures further through the range. The Tamron 28-300, however is a good solid lens at its price point despite reported serious vignetting a wide angles (but if you are shooting ASP-C that should not be a big issue.)

? Ive made an error then - I thought they were all full-frame. Will go and recheck. I have several APS-C lenses that won't work on this new camera so I wad specifically researching full frame.

they were the cheap versions off eBay Australia. From retail camera stores, much worse.

I am now in a position to go ahead with my next camera buy. I also want two lenses to go with it.
I have been comparing a Sigma 10-20 with a Canon 11-24 in one test and a Tamron 28-300 with a Canon 28-300 in another test.

In #1, the price of the Sigma is around $500 in Oz. The Canon is around $3299, or more than 6 times the cost.

In #2, the Tamron is about $480 and the Canon is $3,448, again about 6 times, or more, the cost.

Especially in #2, where the Tamron is shorter and lighter, can anyone tell me what it is I am missing that these Canon lenses are providing for the price? Surely I must not be seeing why this differential exists?

What type of camera bag are you looking for? If you are looking at shoulder bags check out LowePro bags. Their Magnum series shoulder bags are the strongest shoulder bags I've seen. I have the Magnum 200AW bag. It has a one-piece molded bottom that can take a lot of weight. It's a fairly large bag. Their Magnum 400AW and Magnum 650AW bags are even larger.

LowePro Nova series shoulder bags are very good also. Check out the new Nova 200AW II. It has a reinforced bottom that can take a lot of weight without sagging. They're not quite as strong as the Magnum series though.

I'm "only" 67 and have the beginning of balance issues. I recognised them from my stepmother's balance problems. She tackled it with Pilates and it worked wonders. I've just begun a similar program 3 weeks ago and can feel some improvement already. Just gentle Pilates, not a workout !!

That's what I thought.

I went back and checked. I had the 700 on my first trip to Bali in 1981. Also had the Eumigs before then because I have underwater footage from Bali 81 and before on Rottnest Island. My first scuba dive alone was 1/1/80 so I didn't have them before that.

I have a lot of shots from my first trip to Singapore in 1976 but can't remember what I used. I thought it was the Minolta but must have been something prior to that.

Good Luck. It's quite happenstance and your guess is as good as anybody on this or any other site. What will the finance division of your household say if you are wrong and the new model, if one is in the works comes out a week after you deduce you are good for a year.

Take your lumps like we all do. Most decisions are made on the fantasy that the next model will get me over the lumps to nirvana professional.

During the film days that fantasy camera often took 2+ years. With digital, the time lapse is often days or or weeks. A readily tappable home equity loan is in vogue in this era. Take your chances. I went back to film. I'm not fretting over the intro of the next level of film camera. The dissappointment in short waits for advances in digital never did give me a camera that would outshoot my best film days.

Many are going back, which is why I make most of my money selling film Camera's from days of yore on eBay.

Did you EVER shoot film. Ecstacy lives in that realm.
Good Luck. It's quite happenstance and your guess ... (show quote)

Yes, had a Minolta X-700 and backup X-300 from about 1973 on. Plus 2 x Eumig Nautica 8mm Underwater movie cameras.
I am the finance centre in my household so I'm the one that will be irritated if I pay over-the-top for a model that retails for a vast discount shortly after shelling out full asking price.

The trend is for Canon to sit on new releases a bit longer each cycle. They might release another 5D (Mark V?) in about four to five years from the last one. Whether they continue the series will probably depend on the success of mirrorless gear, and the degree to which they can push either technology. The decline in dSLR sales and rate of mirrorless sales' ascension will play a huge role, too.

That's very insightful of you. I need to think through the implications to try to guess when it will translate into a lower cost for the Mk4.

They, Canon, have no plans for a new 5DSr. They do have plans for a 5DS mk II without the AA filter. Canon actually manufacturers more "mirrorless" models than DSLR'S. Clarification, a mirrorless camera is any camera that doesn't have a mirror. The EOS R is mirrorless but it's classification is a MILC or Mirrorless Interchangeable Lens Camera.
I'm curious; you say the 5D IV is a great camera, if you don't have one already. Why is that? I do have one and I feel it's still a great camera. 🐱😁😏

I read the reports on here in in my photo mags. I have a 7DMkII and now want a 5DMkIV also.
