Some of these may have been cropped but not much else has been done with them. Most of them are on Alcatraz Island

Too many things going on in the pictures composition...

a door and maybe some stairs, maybe some trim or banister, how is that too busy? That's what I don't understand. Maybe you mean the door itself is too busy because I can not see how a door photo can be too busy.

I like Pictures 1 & 2 for their composition but the IQ could be a little better(sharper or contrast) and I would use some color saturation in a Photoshop program....many of your shots are just too busy...I am not a pro just giving an opinion...and Refreshing to see something other than a Bird or Flower...

please explain too busy. I have been told that before but don't understand what it means.

I like these.

I like chairs - not necessarily abandoned - and I am putting a 'mini theme' together and will post when I get a few more.

I have spent a lot of time looking at these and trying to think what I would have done differently. This is not a criticism of your work, but rather a learning exercise for me.

#1. I would try to capture more of the sun lit chair at the back. There seems to be a nice translucent quality to what we can see of it.
#2. I think I would explore using the umbrella stand more. Perhaps a composition contrasting the 'normality' of the of the right chair and the stand together in the 'abnormality' setting of a busy street.
#3 Is wonderful as is. The only thing I can think of would be maybe some color correction and shift to the right to pick of the full shadow of the chair and maybe emphasis the shadows a bit.
#4 Is out of focus, but that is OK. I would put the chair dead center on the left thirds. It is close, but off enough to bother me.
#5 Maybe shorter depth of field to put more emphasis on the chair. The shot seems to wander up the street.

Just my thoughts.

Take it as a compliment that so many folks have provided detailed feedback even if you feel some of it is negative. If these were just another bunch of bird or flower shots nobody would have bothered.

PS: If you want abandoned chairs, come to Boston after a snow storm. South Boston is notorious for putting out chairs as space savers for their hard dug out parking spaces.
I like these. br br I like chairs - not necessari... (show quote)

thank you for the thoughtful reply. I enjoyed reading your take on these. And you are right if they were just flowers or birds, no one would have taken the time. I guess I stimulated something with these. I have other topics which might prove to be just as stimulating. Stay tuned...

Would you mind if I shared a couple of our abandoned chairs here? Don’t want to disrupt your thread, but I think see similar visions.

no, I don't mind at all

I hate to say this, but the doors bore me to death. Enough!

Sorry but I have more. You are free not to open my posts, which I luckily, for you, name San Francisco Doors.

Again I'm enjoying your subject matter and composition. I see several pictures that favor one portion, of the picture, over another especially showing for instance white steps vs dark oak or painted door, this is where a post photo... photo shop program could be useful...just saying

I always consider the stairs to be part of the door(way) that's why they are prominent in so many of my photos. You are right, many of them need contrast adjustments among other corrections. Thanks for you comments, they are helpful.

How about your own car? I use mine all the time as a support.

I take it you walk while doing street photography. I do use my car in more than one way at times when doing landscape photography.

Wow, imagine someone coming out of one of those doors with a shot gun! How close were you / how long a lenses were you using? Interesting photo project none-the-less.

I don't own a car. I live in the city so it is easier to do without a car. I gave up my car in 1995 and don't regret it at all. I used to walk everywhere before my cervical spine injury which has left me unable to walk for any distance. Now my car is my mobility scooter, it's not much support.

There have been times when people wanted to know why I was taking a picture of their door. I always found that a bit strange, because San Francisco is one of the world's top destinations for tourists. There is always people taking pictures of everything. Besides, I tend to take photos of things that stand out or are unusual or attractive. Why would anyone who is an exhibitionist, that's how I see those who display unusual things, be surprised when someone takes a photo of the thing they displayed for attention?

As you can see I am careful not to include sensitive things or people's faces in my photos. I don't try to invade anyone's space. There are some photos where you can see inside the house through the window. If they didn't want anyone to see in they would close the blinds. Leaving it open with the light on does not fit the expectation of privacy. Nonetheless, people are weird about having their picture taken so I avoid photos of people all together.

I have never taken a photography class, I take photos intuitively. I like to show you the world as I see it, through my eyes, as crooked and as out of focus they might be.

I first picked up a camera about 10 years ago. It was a low-end digital. I have never used film. Now I have a Canon Rebel DSLR and I am still figuring out how to use the different settings. I take tons of photos because it grounds me and I enjoy it.

I think this is the end of my doors series but may find another batch on another disc. Thank you, for letting me into your world for a few minutes and for looking at my photos.

With the exception of the first one, these were all taken in the past couple of weeks. Now that you have potentially looked at 250 of my doors before this batch, can you see any improvement or changes for the better? Or am I still taking the same misaligned, over-exposed photos? What do I need to pay attention to? What are my strengths and what needs improvement? Judging these 10 as my newest photos and the previous 250 as practice shots. A few of the previous posts had images taken within the past couple of weeks, do you know which ones they were?

The Alcatraz photos were taken 1 week ago. I used my Canon SX60 HS and my Rebel. I found the Rebel took much better photos when comparing the 2 side by side. The SX60 was horrible at white balance and added a blue hue to most of the photos, probably from the Bay and the sky.

I don't expect anyone to answer all these questions but I would like feedback along that vein. But feel free to offer any advice you think would be helpful.

most of these were shot 4-5 years ago. Some have been editted and/or cropped. Nothing spectacular here, just a continuation of the series. Don't expect perfection, but the composition isn't as bad as the technical - lighting alignment etc.
