antarctic weather is usually in the 30-40's (F), so similar to other winter shooting. YMMV. I carried my camera in a water proof bag on the zodiacs. I work with just one lens such as 16-400 -- higher zoom much more useful than wider angle -- time ashore is limited, so you dont want to be switching lenses, and the zoom is necessary for the penguins and handy to pick out details of glaciers, or whales.

wide angle views often become 3 strips of water/snow/sky and the picture doesnt have the power of your experience. for wider shots I also stitch together several images.

Agree 100%.

The long exposure BS is unarguably
just another Special Effect ... which,
by definition, means unreal. ...

ANY photo is unrealistic if you are comparing it to human vision - we do NOT see everything in focus - only a small central area. it appears more is in focus because of eye movement; we do not see color on the peripheries, only b/w

and we do not create an internal 'screen' where we project images -- what we think we 'see' is an illusion that allows us to function in the world (eg, 'color' is a function of our receptors, not an absolute)

other creatures with different eye anatomy & neural processing perceive the same natural world differently than we do.

Hopefully the 3-D scanners will not bother memory cards.

not to mention phones, laptops, tablets, etc, etc -- film & bits are not the same

I use topaz giga ai -- it doesnt work for every image, but overall it's a great product

it's a great site to showcase your work, and it's easy to setup & get a great looking website. the store sections have really improved over the years - you just set default prices and people can order prints, greeting cards, clothing, etc

actual sales (other than to family/friends) still depend on your efforts

the pixels.com website in my signature shows what the website looks like (no work from me other than uploading pictures & creating 'collections')

My preference would be for the Federal Government to collect the sales tax by zip code and remit them to the States.

That would save the shippers from needing to do a lot of calculating and remitting.

what part of the federal govt could collect STATE taxes?

besides, sellers on ebay & amazon don't have to do anything - the taxes are automatically assessed - that's what the new facilitator laws accompiish

Meanwhile NH has sued the federal government. Why should we tax someone for something they bought here when we do not have a sales tax?

because the state THEY live in has a sales tax - it's always been the law that you owed the tax in your state - there just wasn't an reasonable way to collect it

easier is to rename them using YYMMDD-xxx, using date taken, then they'll sort correctly no matter what folder they're in

. technically, the entropy (chaos) of the resulting sampled data is higher. Because of the Second Law of Thermodynamics, any process can only *increase* the entropy of a closed system. A picture IS a closed system, so to reduce the entropy on some details, the process can only increase on the overall picture.

..

wrong application of 2nd law - it's not a closed system once you add the ai software - i ve been using it for several months and have not found it adding elements not in the originals

it really depends on the image whether there's a big change or not. I just set it up to run on another computer, usually at 2x. it's been a big help in my workflow

ive submitted there for over 10 years - each year it becomes more difficult due to the enormous # of new images. you probably need at least 1000 excellent images to make any reasonable income

Are we, as photographers, allowed to sell any picture of anything we shoot without first obtaining the permission of the owner of "anything"? For example, a field of corn, or a church or a door or a cat?
Are we even legally allowed to shoot the picture in the first place? If we hang such a picture have we not obtained some advantage?

first, there are very few instances where you cannot take a picture (eg, certain areas at airports). except for those very specific instances, no one can stop you from TAKING a picture. problems arise depending on what you DO with that image.

to get a better idea of what's permissible to sell, go to one of the microstock agencies and see what they list as royalty free, and what is sold as editorial.

if you are producing hundreds or thousands of images, registering is more trouble than it's worth -. even if you finally get a judgment (not w/o costs), you are still responsible for collecting $ which is the most difficult step.

Thanks... you’re right, but my thoughts were the supposedly better images on a non-zoom for city photos.

you're not likely to notice the difference -- and the zoom is much more versatile when you don't have a lot of time, as happens on a cruise. i usually take 2 or 3 different images, zooming in or out, and sort them out later

if you 're on the site as a worker/consultant, etc, you need to clarify with them as to your rights to use the images. a separate issue, submitting for a critique per se wouldnt affect your ability to sell the images.

If it were me traveling, I'd skip the 35 and just take the 50 & 18-200.

i'd drop the 50 too -- makes it a lot easier to enjoy the trip w/o having to swap lenses
