Greetings all, since retiring I want to learn more about photography. I've always used point and shoot cameras but never satisfied with the results. Not long ago I got a Nikon D5300 and got some decent photos but still not where I want to be. I've seen fantastic photos on this site and already picked up several good tips that I want to try. Learning to shoot using manual settings is of interest at this time. I live just outside of Yosemite and landscape photography is my main interest. Lucky me right! I thought about posting some of my Yosemite photos here but after seeing so many awesome Yosemite shots, I think I'll wait until I get a little better. Looking forward to seeing more great photos and info that I can use to hone my skills.

How you gonna get better if you don't know what you're doing wrong? Every person in this group has made (and continues to make) really awful images. With film, three good ones from a 36 exposure roll was about the norm; with digital the ratio (a twelfth) is probably the same. Put up your images, put on your armor plate and find out what you can do right now to improve.

I really don’t like being direct, but it seems lately some of our inquiries have become fodder for some ”members” to be condescending with comments and jabs aimed at us amateurs wanting constructive advise to improve our techniques and experiences.
In my opinion, if you can’t give constructive advice and comments, get off our forum!

Don't dismiss the possibility that Russians are posting nasty comments on this forum. These guys are serious, and Americans don't seem to care much about the snowballing descent in name calling.

Montreal is remarkably diverse, and I've been there 14 times on my way to an Atlantic Salmon river on the North Shore. Always find more pictures to take in Montreal.

I am debating to buy one of these two lenses. Since the f2.8 is on sale is it worth the extra funds? I compared the specs and 2.8 looks better in spite of the still noticeable cost difference. In use, what are the advantages one over the other?

BTW I am new here. I have been reading for a few weeks. Great site.

I have the older Nikon AF-S 80-200 f2.8 and I'd estimate that at least a third of the exposures I make with
it are at f2.8. My lens is quite incredibly sharp at all apertures.

Crested Caracara are an endangered bird that primarily feed on carrion. You can sometime see them amongst vultures either circling or feeding with them. Here in Osceola County Florida they can be found on cattle ranches that have scrub and trees. They are gorgeous in flight and I ask that if anyone has one SHOW ME PLEASE.

Do you know if this bird is classified or characterized as a raptor?

Isn't that a snow leopard?

I'm curious how people feel that bought their new Nikon Z7 last month to see that Nikon reduced the price on them so soon. Me personally, I am really ticked off. I understand that if you bought the Z7 less than 30 days ago that there might be some relief in order but in my case it was about 36 days ago and B&H basically said "Sorry".

I noticed that Nikon USA has reduced by three yards the price of D850. Now 3K

Do National Geographic photographers use Photoshop?

As Sarah Chalek says, all photographers use Photoshop to enhance their images. But National Geographic photographers have very strict rules on what they are and are not allowed to do. The magazine got into big trouble when it published an edition with this cover:

The magazine had moved the two pyramids closer together to make a more striking cover - and the result was public outrage (well, outrage among the small coterie of Nat Geo subscribers who cared about this sort of thing).

So today they can use Photoshop to replicate traditional darkroom techniques, such as fixing contrast and tone, but photomontage of any sort is a definite no-no.

I don't think that the pyramid cover means that NG "moved" the pyramids; in my view it's much more likely that the shot was made with a telephoto lens.

Resolution is defined by pixels. JPEG quality is defined by the percentage removal of data when compressing the image data into a JPEG format, a removal that is non-reversible. The higher the JPEG quality, the lesser the amount of original data is removed.

Your camera is 42 megapixels, creating files measuring 7952 × 5304 pixels, irregardless of whether the stored format is RAW or JPEG. The file size is not determined by the pixel resolution of the image. If you don't have the software needed to edit RAW files, your better choice is the high-quality JPEG, where the quality can be excellent straight from the camera as well as being readily available for minor through highly advanced editing. Using the high quality JPEG setting, the least amount of JPEG compression occurs when creating the files that are physically smaller than the corresponding RAW files, but still are images with resolution = 7952 × 5304 pixels.

Hello all!

After much nagging and badgering from my mom, kenievans (who is an active member of the forums here), I finally joined. I am a complete beginner when it comes to photography. I shoot with a Nikon D3000 or my Samsung Galaxy Note 8 phone. I don't do much processing beyond just making a color image black and white or adding a filter here and there, but that's just because I have no idea what I'm doing. I look forward to interacting with everyone and I hope to learn a lot.

Here are some of my favorite photos that I have taken with either my camera or my phone.

T*****r guy, you seem fixated on Trump....rent free thing and all. Then you need to lie to support your flimsy position held together by lies and innuendo. Your mind is warped with Trump h**e, and you have left sanity behind. The lib f*****t socialist dems have brainwashed you well. You lost the battle t*****r boy.

If indeed you think that Trump belongs in the White House then you are to be pitied. Seriously, where has your reason gone? This man has absolutely devastated government, our prestige abroad and our safety. What do you hope he will do when he is directly confronted with a serious crisis the resolution of which will require a leader of intelligence, courage and honesty? Good luck with that.

So race baiting is supposed to get your point across? Your comments about viagra etc. are pretty much your own imagination without facts as proof. Aside from your d********g racial slurs the experts say a wall will work and help in some places along the border. No offense but I'll take an experts assessment of the wall to your biased ideas. If there is anything else, besides defending "white folks" that I can help you with to better understand the situation I'm here everyday.

Well, maybe your "experts" say a wall will help, but the great majority say it will not. The wall is Trump's signature trope; it is so racially prejudiced against Hispanics (Trump isn't harping on our other border) that the "base," eager for confirmation bias (of an absolutely false belief) may be beginning to use their brains for rational thought instead of blindly accepting wh**ever this pariah says. There may be hope.

Actually, Americans are ALL on the losing team. The farm animals comprising the administration are inflicting really nasty damage to all of us every minute of every day.
