When the c****a v***s began there was an increase in my pension plan, that surprised me. It stayed steady throughout the entire time we have been going thru this.
Thank you Trump.

Since the e******n my portfolio has taken a hit, I have lost right at $100,000.
Thanks a lot Biden.

Early in the Great Recession (2008) I sold most of my stock, then bought back when I saw signs of recovery. I ended up ahead. Frank

It should not surprise you to know that all of us are tanking financially. We can blame anyone we choose but nothing will change the facts. Let’s be careful before this thread ends up in the Attic. I’m Afraid of dark places. I didnt expect to close this year needing open heart surgery. As for the Hospital Bills I never been in a hospital bed in all my 59 years. I never had surgery either. Just think, after all the pot I smoked when I was a teenager it never affected me!
As for you my fellow Hogger, thank you for your service.

Agree. Regardless of each person’s political philosophy, thank you to all who served our country in the military.

It’s not either/or. Nothing gives 100% protection from Covid, but a few things reduce the chances of getting it. Such as the usual recommendations: wear masks, wash hands often, social distancing, avoiding groups, etc. I suppose staying home 100% of the time with absolutely no contact with anyone else may provide close to 100% protection, but who can do that. It’s like driving. There is always some risk of an accident, but there are things you can do to reduce the risk, such as using seat belts, staying within speed limit, making sure you are awake, replacing tires when needed, not using your cell phone while driving, etc. You can do everything recommended and still get Covid, but if you follow the CDC recommendations your chances are reduced. To add another comment: Even a vaccine, none the ones becoming available, provides 100% protection. The good ones are 90+% effective. Frank

You have several good suggestions. I use sparingly a waterproof bicycle grease, then tighten the screws holding the legs on to a tension that allows opening them without too much effort.

If you take crappy poor photos, then all a new piece of equipment is going to do is to allow you to continue to take crappy poor photos---but at a higher price now.[/quote)

Tomcat, I think your statement is over simplified. If you have a certain level of skill and you replace a mediocre lens with a high quality lens (e.g., pro level Nikon or Canon or Zeiss), then your images should improve to the extent that the pro lens is better than the original. Don’t you agree? Frank
A 2nd thought. There are at least 3 ways to improve your images: 1) improve your skill, 2) improve your equipment, especially lenses, and 3) do both. Frank

I was in my 3rd year of teaching 6th grade near Seattle. A fellow teacher opened my door and said the President had been shot. I immediately turned on the radio, and my students and I spent the rest of the day following the news. I made the decision that 6th graders were old enough to benefit from following this tragic, grave, wrong, and historic event in real time. Frank

I suggest that GAS vs practice is a false dichotomy. There are at least 4 possible combinations:
Lots of gear + lots of practice
Scarce gear + lots of practice
Lots of gear + little practice
Scarce gear + little practice
Personally I love precision made gear/tools, and I love to use them. The only person I have to account to for the photo gear I acquire is my spouse. I do photography because it’s fun and because most images are meaningful to me. I think we should avoid even the hint of judgment toward others who focus on gear acquisition or others who appear lacking in knowledge or skill. How can we say to anyone, “Too much gear, or not enough practice?” Frank

I chose distance vision in both eyes when I got cataracts removed, and I use glasses for near vision. I had 2 reasons. First, if I lost, damaged, or did not have my glassses, I could still walk and drive and see well with both eyes. Second, I know that out to about 25’ we judge distance by the binocular effect of both eyes, that is, each eye transmits to the brain a slightly different image, and the more different the two images the closer is the object focused on, which only works if both eyes are corrected for distance vision. This is important for driving in congested traffic. Longer distances are usually judged by overlap. Frank

No teacher should ever say that to ANY student. My Dad was a teacher for over 4 decades and always respected his students, and they responded to that, even when he was correcting them for misbehavior. One example was when he was athletic director and a number of football jerseys went missing. They were seen on the backs of students walking the halls of the school. Instead of crawling all over them, he appealed to them (and their conscience) and asked them to return them. They did. No repercussions.

I fully agree with you. How we treat children and teens is a strong factor in how they treat others later on. Frank

I think my dislike for those words goes back to a teacher who used them to mean “it’s so obvious even you can understand it.” I found his use of the words condescending.

I suspect a lot our vocabulary preferences, both negative and negative, have similar origins. Frank

Remember most people, other than the pro's, take pictures for themselves, to display to an audience is of secondary concern. I am a hunter, I wonder around with a 70-300 kit lens looking for birds, bugs and animals. I have only two concerns: Get as close as I can; Get a clear, sharp image of my subject. I can fix anything else, at least to my satisfaction. Background replacement, including skies, are part of my Post Processing skill set and I use them shamelessly.

Imagine I have a shot of a bird that I have never seen before but taking up most of the background is an old building covered with with graffiti and above that is a bright blue sky. Am I not going to take the picture? Of course not. I am going to use my Post Processing skills to the best of my ability to get a result I'm happy with.

All people who take pictures should remember it's their picture and the only one they have to satisfy is themselves.

Curmudgeon, I agree with you as far as you go. By analogy, if I were to write something that includes quotes from others without attribution and solely for my own pleasure, that’s fine. But if I publish it that way, most people would view that as not fine. I feel the same about major manipulations of photos we present publicly — we should document what they are. I am aware that this is a minority view. Frank

One of my pet peeves is the use of the words “certainly” and “clearly” to lend credence to a point.

I used “certainly” as shorthand for “I am quite sure that the following is rational.” Whenever I can use one word to replace several I will. Frank
