Making the switch to my first DSLR several years ago...a Nikon D50...and trying raw...I shot raw plus jpeg one time. I haven't shot a jpeg since.

I was willing to pay the $50 tax...their return policy was the deal breaker...10 days and in store credit only.

I drove 90 miles to the closest camera store to check out the 18-400...got them to match on line prices with the Tap In Console...but was $50 higher due to taxes. The deal breaker for me was their return policy...10 days for in-store credit only. Went home and ordered it from Adorama. I'm in the process of doing the 'Tap In' focus adjustment...a real trick. Hoping to give it a good field test today.

Hi Mark...markinvictoria Texas here. I appreciated your post. I came down with polio when I was 5 (70 years ago) which settled in my right hand. My main after effects today are weakness between thumb and index finger...plus what I call my twitching trigger finger. 'Back button focus' has made my photography much easier...there's just no way I can half press the shutter button. I also get a lot of 'burst mode'...want it or not. Tripod and wired remote are my best solutions...but not always feasible. I think I will try your 'hand strap' idea...it might help my keeper rate.

I got the Tamron 18-400 with the Tap In Console for Xmas. Been trying to do the Focus Adjustment with my D500. Tamron's instructions for the focus adjustment is really lacking...even on line research leaves a lot of questions. I've been using a LensAlign along with the in camera AF fine-tune for a starting point. Figured out the LensAlign is too small for the full adjustment range...working on a DIY solution.
Questions:

1.Do you measure the distance from the test pattern to...camera sensor, end of lens, or ??? And is the exact distance critical...especially on the short end adjustment?

2.Do you go through all 24 adjustment settings...then input all the numbers at one time with the Tap In or enter them in different stages...short, medium and infinity?

3."Infinity" How do you adjust for infinity...especially at 8 different focal points? If I knew what distances to use...maybe Dot-Tune would work. The 18-400 doesn't have a distance scale...so no infinity indication.

Any help would be Greatly Greatly Appreciated...time is running out on the return window. Thanks

Photography without cameras? How do you do that?

Probably so they will not look so filthy after being handled for years...just my guess.

Years ago when I bought my first CPLs...I modified my hoods using a drill and Dremel tool to cut a slot on the bottom of the lens hood. Made them wide and long enough so my finger could easily fit and turn the CPL. They are cut on the bottom and pretty much out of sight. With some effort...you can almost make it look like it's a factory design.

I was at 'Under the Wire Fly In'...a small town grass air strip annual fly in...lots of restored Stearmans and various other aircraft. I met a semi-pro photographer there...he was shooting D500 with the Tamron 150-600 G2 and I was shooting a D7100 with the 200-500. We did some camera and lens swapping. He went home, sold his Tammy and ordered the 200-500...I went home and ordered the D500. Moral of the story...The D500 paired with the 200-500 is one sweet combination.

My D90 went into Coleto Lake...about 2 feet of water...took about 30 seconds to find it. After regaining my composure...I pulled out the battery and took off the lens, dumped out the sandy water. Figured it was toast...but let it sit in the hot Texas sun for a few days. With canned air and a brush...cleaned it the best I could.

Not expecting anything...put in the battery...it actually turned on. Even the brand new Tamron 70-300 VC I was trying out that day worked functionally, even the AFS and VC...but all the glass was fogged over. Did a wet clean on the sensor and tried a different lens...everything worked fine except the internal auto focus would not lock on. With AFS lenses...the D90 works fine. I used it as my kayaking camera for several years...still works today. I eventually disassembled the Tamron 70-300...it's in a box in a hundred pieces...no way I could ever get it back together again.

Or...keeping it simple...shooting the moon by itself with no foreground...tripod, 500mm or so lens, aperture priority, iso 100, f8, spot metering, auto focus.

If we were talking CF cards I might agree with you...they were known for bent pin problems.

I bought my D500 in November...The Lexar card readers were discontinued or questionably backordered. So I ordered the combo Sony XQD/SD UHS II card reader (also backordered) along with Sony G series XQD and SD UHS II 64gb cards. The Sony card reader is finally available and should be delivered Monday. The Sony route was a bit more expensive...but I should be good to go now. I really didn't care to connect the camera to computer every time I downloaded photos.
