In terms of composition, avoid the straight-on, full center shots. Consider creating interest by shooting from an angle. Get down low. Get up high. Move your camera around until you find a frame that is most interesting.

I do not know about today but some years ago Steve McCurry only took 2 or 3 lenses with him for an assignment and one of those lenses was his Nikon 50 mm f1.4, most probably his most used lens.
I am no professional photographer but when I travel I carry the least amount of gear I can, like an Olympus M43 body and a couple of lenses, like the 12-40 f2.8 Pro and the kit 40-150 f4-5.6. It could be my Nikon D610 with the 24-85 or the 28-105 and a prime 24 mm f2.8 and less often with a 70-300 lens.

My personal experience is that in a majority of cases we take with us more than we need.

Usually, my Nikon D610 + Nikor 24-70.

You don't need to print out the downloaded manual. You simply download the manual “file”. Save the file on your computer. That way, whenever you want to read it you can open the file on your computer and read it on your computer. Easy.

You can download the manual for free if you want to get it faster and save on your computer for reference. Simply search for “download manual” and the camera model number/name.

I have the “D” version of this lens on my D610. If I want to upgrade to a Nikor full frame lens that is better quality in this approximate range of vision, is there a Nikor lens you can recommend? Not sure if the “G” version is FX.

Thank you in advance,
Eileen

If you live in a place with genuine Winter, what are your favorite pursuits?

Love getting out early morning after a fresh snowfall/ice storm to shoot the up-close magic of it all.

I'm glad I got married over fifty years ago, when I could afford an engagement ring. An ad for rings popped up here - $72,000. I don't think so.

You know, years ago, an engagement ring did not contain diamonds. That was the brilliant idea of the diamond industry. You'll see that in old movies, or movies set in the past. You've heard of the movie "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend." The diamond industry was behind that. The diamond market is totally controlled, and the prices are set artificially high. There is no shortage of diamonds.

Smart people will create their own engagement rings in whatever stone/color they love, not held hostage to social norms of the diamond industry. Diamonds = boring.

I was reading all the replies to the post "camera on or off " . And it seems everyone carries a spare battery when out shooting . How many pictures do you guys shoot to use up a battery ??
I know every camera is different but on a big day, I've shot close to 500 pics and still had plenty of battery life left with both my Nikon D5100 and my D7200. I've never needed to use a spare battery. Just curious .

I always feel better walking out the front door with an extra battery. Experience has taught me this is prudent.
I agree with Linda from Maine that a good understanding of exposure is a good idea. But I love auto ISO. I am frequently shooting in less than optimal conditions and the auto ISO means that I may get the shot even If it is noisy, OK I am old film school, grainy (and yes I do know the difference.)[/quote

Sometimes grainy is nice, though. It does have it’s place.

I like that idea. I’ll have to look around to find a reputable place.

We have about 35-40 framed photos, mostly very old portraits, of family members passed. No simple way to store and certainly not view, stacked in a pile in the basement.

Can anyone recommend a way to disassemble and preserve as digital files that can then be shared with other family members. We could then trash the old frames.

Surely we cannot be the only family with this issue. Any ideas?

P.S. Don’t be snarky.

I favor lenses made by the manufacturer and in this case my recommendation is the Micro Nikkor 105 mm f2.8. If you want to save some money and still get its excellent quality you could buy it second hand.
At 105 mm it will give you plenty of working distance and it can reach 1:1 ratio.

I second the recommendation for the 105mm. Love it.

I almost forget, it also doubles as a very good portrait lens and medium tele.
I need a camera for my fishing trips. I create presentations for fishing clubs, so I want good image quality. I want RAW format capabilities for better editing of images. I want to have a wide range of lens lengths, but I do not want interchangeable lens capability. I want to keep my kit as compact as possible. For the lens, wide is probably more important than telophoto.
