I was reading all the replies to the post "camera on or off " . And it seems everyone carries a spare battery when out shooting . How many pictures do you guys shoot to use up a battery ??
I know every camera is different but on a big day, I've shot close to 500 pics and still had plenty of battery life left with both my Nikon D5100 and my D7200. I've never needed to use a spare battery. Just curious .

I very rarely need to change batteries in a day. I nearly always start with a full charge. On photo trips I charge the previous day's batteries overnight. My big "photo job" of the year I may shoot 500 or 600 between two cameras, never a problem.

Battery performance depends on the age of the battery, the type of camera and how the photographer uses (wastes) their battery storage.

DSLRs typically last 1000+ images assuming the photographer doesn't waste battery by performing in-field image review on the back of body display. I can fill one card, maybe two, without having to change a battery if I started with a fresh full charge. But, if I'm doing a lot of LiveView shooting, I might drain the battery before I even fill a single card.

Mirrorless is approaching the same length on the newest models, but historically, they last a lot less vs DSLRs because nearly every shot includes some aspect of display of the image. The mirrorless photographer should try to not do in-field review, set the display to the minimum time-out, and shoot from the EVF rather than the rear-panel display. And, bring 1 or more fully-charged replacement batteries.

Carrying an extra, fully charged, battery is a good idea for an amateur or pro. Cheap insurance! Best of luck.

Battery capacity wasn't always as high as it is now. Perhaps some of us have memories of unfortunate experiences involving running out of battery power and vowing to never let it happen again, causing us to be over-cautious (but secure ).

I rarely need the second battery unless an inspection or shoot goes several hours. In that case it is more about how long the camera is on rather than the number of actuations. Also how much the EVF is used for reviewing images.

Video is another story. I had to run a Hero7 for a job and was thoroughly dismayed when the battery only lasted about 15 minutes.

I have absolutely no idea how many shots I get on a set of batteries (Two in the grip).
Nor do I care.
The batteries get low, I replace them and continue on.
A metric I will never measure.

I don't have a spare battery. I so far never need to change the battery during the day. But I only shoot the most about 500 shots a day.

Batteries are like everything else - they fail on occasion, sometimes for no apparent reason. Batteries are small and lightweight. I see very little reason to NOT have a spare in my pocket.

Agree about the spare.

So, how many shots do you get on a battery, on average? Not sure, but I think that was the question.

Correct, but he also implied in his last sentence that he wondered why he should carry a spare. I was answering that question because I have no idea how many shots I get out of one battery. With my old D-90 I once got something over 800. I now use a D-500 and a D-7500. I have never drained the battery in either one of them.

Simple insurance. If you don't spend a lot of time reviewing your images, you will probably get 500-600 images on a good battery. If you don't have a back-up, you will end up needing it one day - Murphy's Law!

The battery in my cameras may not be fully charged when I want to use them. If I took some images from a precious outing. I don't necessarily recharge the battery. I also have no idea how many pictures I'm going to take so I always carry a spare battery even if I don't think I'm going to use it. I'd rather have it with me and not use it as opposed to needing it and not having it with me. Over the years I've generally have been able to get get between 500 and and 800 images per battery charge on my Canon 7D Mark II DSLR. However, a fully charged battery for a mirrorless camera Like my Nikon Z fc can generally capture 300 to 400 images. Many of us also shoot video as well as still image which uses as a lot of battery power. Having a spare battery with you is always a wise precaution.

So what do you do if you forget to recharge your battery and you're on the way out to a shoot? And what are you going to do when your battery's recharge capacity and it's tability to hold a charge starts to diminish? I'd hate to find out the hard way when I'm out shooting that my battery no longer has the ability to meet my needs.
