Monopods ….They are only meant to reduce camera shake when hand-holding a camera…….

I must disagree, at least as it concerns action photography. Sure a monopod may indeed reduce camera shake, but I (and I suspect most) action photographers use a monopod because hand holding a heavy pro body and long tele lens for long periods of time is too tiring for all of us. I consider my monopod as a tool to allow me to physically hold heavy gear. When shooting moving subjects, most action shooters are at high shutter speeds so camera shake isn’t much of a problem.

Best comment so far. A troll posts and 5 pages later……………

Edit - the OP was not the troll.

Seriously? This is one guys opinion. And a guy who I don’t know. This “ranking” is sophomoric, subjective and frankly, silly and useless.

Edit - perhaps not so useless to Canon fanboys here who will gloat that Canon was higher on the list than Nikon. You know who I’m talking about😎

Rob - glad you asked for bird hunting guidance. I'm planning a trip to Florida in mid-March and am thinking of arriving a few days early to photograph birds. I'm specifically seeking to capture Osprey feeding from the water. If you know of any top spots to see such I'd appreciate it if you'd share the information. Thanks! -Rob up North

You don't mention where in FL you are planning to visit so it's difficult to name a specific spot. But for the record, you are likely to see an osprey diving for a fish at pretty much any lake in the state. while driving around, look on top of trees and light poles/utility poles for Osprey nests (they are huge and easy to spot). If you find a nest, look in the nearby neighborhood for a pond or lake and you'll undoubtedly see the birds fishing. early am and late pm is best.

Not being snarky - there are birding opportunities everywhere you look throughout FL. While folks above have given you specific options, I have shot hundreds of keepers in parking lots, on street lamp poles, highway lights, or just on or in pretty much every pond, park or tree I pass. It’s truly a birders’ paradise.

Every experienced outdoor photographer I have ever been with (the late Galen Rowell was a friend) used a protective lens filter (UV, other) to protect the soft lens glass & coatings from dirt, water, anything else. The lens filter could be easily cleaned (years ago we used Kodak lens cleaning papers, now it is microfiber cloths)without ever possibly damaging the lens and its coatings. I ran lens filter tests years ago using monochromatic lens beams when I had access to an optical bench with meters: the high quality B+W, Hoya, Nikon, Canon, Heliopan were tested. As I recall, the coated ( anti-reflection coated) UV filters all had superb resolution, had slight(1.5% or less)light loss, were not a problem. The polarizing filters could not be evaluated due to their immense variation. The Tiffen filter had greater than 2% light loss, also had greater resolution loss, and was apparently made of glass with greater impurities. I use a lens cap(as suggested by others)and a protective UV filter, since my lens has greater value than $15. filter. I have never damaged a lens.

Appreciate your reply and your experiences mimic mine, but alas, the know it alls on this site will not be swayed by your real world experiences since your conclusions differ from theirs and there’s is the absolute gospel. Wasting our breath attempting to express a contrary position to the all knowing blowhards.

Btw - I met Galen several times (once during a visit to Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs). He had spent the week hanging from a rope halfway up (or was it down?) one of the cliff walls. Man, that guy was NUTS! He would do some weird stuff in order to get the shot. Filter wise, he was a big fan of Singh Ray.

To other huggers, If you’ve never seen his stuff, Google it. That guy was one helluva landscape shooter and we’re not talking about setting up a tripod at the edge of the lake kind of shots. We lost him too soon.

Perfectly stated. It’s downright goofy. It’s all preference amongst a bunch of amateur (of which I am one) photographers. Over trivial matters.
Filter, no filter. Raw vs jpeg. LR vs what ever. How many is us operate at the edge of performance that any of this matters? One look at the gallery and who could argue many?

This is an example of a relatively unmoderated site. It allows a certain culture to exist which often is not positive. The attic should not even exist. But moderation takes time and efforts.

I belong to a camera club with a few very high end photographers. National if not world class. Not once have any of our programs discussed filters, canon v Sony v Nikon.

Just a suggestion. Since you already own both filters, why not try each on your glass and decide for yourself which, if either, is superior? Your real world, hands on experiences would seem to be a far better way to decide. No one on any forum knows the level of “imperfection ”, if any exists at all, you are willing to accept.

To “death and taxes”, UHH readers can add “protection filter/ no protection filter” as a third absolute in the cosmos. No matter what the original question in the forum is, if the words “ protection filter” appear anywhere in the post, regardless of the actual question, some here cannot control themselves and must pontificate that using such a filter is wrong and insist on bludgeoning those who disagree into submission. Give it a rest. Some of us have the temerity to disagree with you.

Topaz Photo AI is even better than Denoise. I was in doubt that it could be better as I used Denoise for years and was happy with the results, but Photo AI proved to be better.

I had a different result. I too used Denoise, but that was before Topaz released the new AI version of denoise. I currently have Photo AI, the newer Topaz Denoise and newer Sharpen and I find that often, I get better results using the improved stand alone Denoise and sharpen instead of Photo AI. Seems too often I find that applying the software separately is better than the one do it all program.

As a quick unrelated aside, I also got Topaz Gigapixel and that is a gamechanging upsizing program. With the advances in AI, the results are breathtaking and Topz keeps updating its software frequently as AI continues to improve. Way back when, Genuine Fractals was the upsizing software and it was really only for emergencies. The Topaz stuff is scary good.

Went out to shoot butterflies and this guy landed in my viewfinder. No idea what it is, but it is definitely eyecatching.

Not the best image photographically, but curious as to the name.

I appreciate those who are “defending” my post, but just to be clear, I actually intended to post it to Photo Gallery but I inadvertently must have not succeeded. What I find most disturbing is the ridiculous level of vitriol directed at me. What’s the matter with these folks? Calling for me to be executed for the “crime” seems a tad extreme and the incivility in this forum is reaching new highs (or is it lows?) to the point that it’s becoming more unpleasant to participate with each passing instance. Im compelled to mention that it seems so many of these nasties are members with thousands of posts. I guess it’s easier to run up 35,000+ posts when a lot of them are snide remarks. Rant over. Until the next time. 😎
