ChrisT,

No offense intended, but it seems you have waded into a group of folks that have an ebb and flow that works for them. There is a sharing of information, some friendly ribbing and vast amounts of valuable information that flows here.

I am a motorcyclist and the little dust ups here remind me of tire and oil threads or the dreaded Harley vs. BMW vs. Kawi, vs. the rest of the industry.....

Just my take on things.

YMMV

I have heard the same question about Pentax for years. I was told the first time I went to a local camera club to dump my Pentax gear and go with Canon or Nikon the only real cameras on the market and that Pentax was about to fold. (That was over 20 years ago). Instead of dumping Pentax I dumped being part of that local club.

I cut my teeth with Pentax. moved over into digital with Pentax and have heard the doom and gloom. Well all I can say is I have had the K100d, the K20, K10, K7, K5 and the K3. Sold the K10 and K7 to fund a new lens or two. Use the K100d as a tool when folks want to see if photography is their new thing and make it a loaner.

The K20, 5 are great backup rigs. The K3 is still going strong. Now if Pentax disappears it means taking the best of my Pentax lenses and finding an adapter that will fit on a new line.

Do I see that as happening. Nope. In 5 years the landscape will be what it is. I figure all three cameras will last long enough that I don't have to worry about it. If all of a sudden it appears they will disappear I will pick up a K1 and be happy.

They make some great lenses and to be honest I have found that in most cases based on what one shoots it is not the camera but the person behind the camera. Hell you can get great shots with one time use cameras if you know how to shoot. Oh wait they are slowly disappearing.... drat......

Being retired and now using my Pentax gear as a way to cash in on the hobby they perform well and help keep the bank account in the black.

Apologies; I agree with THIS statement and intended to respond to this post!

As stated earlier, I am new to the forum and the response links are oriented differently.

I am new to this forum, but it seems there have been a wee bit of antagonistic posts recently.

It's a lot like living with my siblings when I was young....

If you ignore them they get bored and move along unless there is another motive to the activity.

The comment you made seems to imply you don't realize Pentax makes AF cameras ....

Or, is this an illusion to your belief since most of the older lenses available used are MF lenses, then the bodies must be, also?

Well, Pentax no longer makes Manual-Focus-only bodies. The K-1, K-3II, K-3, KP and K-70 are all AF.

They also have quite an array of lenses. The only limited option seems to be in the UWA-Z area.

Still, their AP-Zs and longer zooms are all exemplary ...

I still have my K1000 (AOCo) and my first DSLR was a K50 that I passed on to my husband as I worked up the camera ladder. They are still great cameras.

Here is an interesting article about the K1000.

I have been using SmugMug for years. I used a free website back in the day. They made a major change and I lost a lot of links to some motorcycle forums where we had photo tags, dinner rides, etc. posted. Nothing really artsy, just P&S pics for the most part but I had to load the ones we really wanted to keep on the forums on SmugMug and re-post.

I heard that Photo Bucket was hosting at no charge and recently made a change. They required subscribers using their service to post on 3rd party websites to upgrade their account. If my understanding is correct, the upgrade was to the tune of about $400.00 / year. They broke existing links to pictures in those forums and YEARS worth of ride reports, motorcycle upgrades, repairs, goofy rally pics, etc. were just GONE. That certainly led to a lot of unhappy campers.

Be careful of "free" services.

I know a lot of folks that like Shutterfly, but read the agreement carefully. Last time I read through it looks as if they can do anything they like with your pics.

Thanks all for your replies.

I will experiment and see what happens. There is always the option of returning the teleconverter if the results are truly awful images.

As stated earlier; many of my subjects have feet and wings also. :-)

Hi All,

I recently purchased a TC-201 Teleconverter for around $40.00. I know that this is not a very popular teleconverter, but for $40.00 bucks I thought I would try it. I have an older Nikon and lenses as well a newer Nikon body and lenses.

I also have an older Pentax K1000 and lenses, but I have not really considered using them with this device yet.

I downloaded a chart of the lenses that are compatible. I have taken some test shots with a couple of lenses and I am beginning to figure out what settings I need to use, but an actual instruction manual for this model would be really helpful. Nikon downloads netted nothing for this model.

I have spent a lot of "$ searching capital" on the internet with sparse results. It appears to be the Phantom of Teleconverters.

Does anyone have experience with this device?

Any suggestions, advice or poking sticks at the newbie are welcomed.

Thanks!

Enjoy! I purchased my Pentax K-50 in white and really enjoy it. It was my introduction into DSLR photography and was a lot of fun to learn!

Mr. Shapiro,

You speak the words of a mentor.

I am taking the (huge, scary) step to transition from one career to another and I value your shared experience and wisdom. I have a feeling that the past 30+ years w/ a large family-owned business, government work for a few years in CA and 21 years with a large corporation will help me with the "door knobs" I WILL encounter.

I have been studying, taking courses and developing business plans for the past few years and I am in the process of putting my money where my mouth is with an LLC. My husband and friends have been a huge source of encouragement and very supportive.

I have the privilege of receiving advice from a successful pro photographer in this area and it has been so helpful.

The old adage of God giving us two ears and one mouth is so true. We should listen twice as often as we speak.

Thank you for sharing so I could listen.

I love my Pentax K-50. When I began shooting digital (starting with a Canon pocket camera) and resurrected my dormant love for photography, I bought a K-50 before adding a Nikon to my ever-growing collection of equipment.

I still love it. It is light and takes great pictures. I have not experienced any reliability issues and as noted above, my old lenses from my days with the K-1000 work with the K-50.

We will be visiting the area soon.

I wonder if this may be a great opportunity to document the healing process. A waterfall is an excellent place to do that.
