I am enjoying reading about all of the gray market chatter from south of Can-Am border. Up here, our authorized, factory and independent repair facilities Have no problem dealing with equipment with Canadian serial numbers and foreign serial numbers with expired warranties. Nikon, Canon and others can’t honour foreign warranties, but can honour international warranties. America First is a terrible idea if this is what it means.

😁Hi UHH folks
I would like to get an F2.8 for indoor and outdoorparty photos with low light when it’s needed..I have a Nikon 18-140 and an 18-300 lenses and a NIKKOR 200-500 lens. Also a 50mm 1.8 Any advice would be appreciated.
Thank you in advance

My kit includes the Nikkor 24-70 f/2.8; the Nikkor 70-200 f/2.8; a Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 as well as one other zoom and a number of primes. All are f/2.8 or faster except the Nikkor 300mm f/4. I am ready for all of my imaging excursions and projects.

If the serial number starts with 3 it is USA. If it starts with any other number it's grey market.

I’m in Canada (Toronto) and bought a used US model D300s. I had it serviced at Nikon Canada with no difficulty. When I asked, they advised me that they were unconcerned about the origin of the equipment. I have also had Nikon equipment serviced at the independent Sun Camera not too far from my office and they are authorized by Nikon and can get any parts needed if Nikon Canada has inventory. With exchange rate, I’d suggest that all you Americans worried about “gray market” seriously considering dealing with more friendly Canadian repair services.

What differences do you expect to see relative to sensor sizes?

Advantages going up to full-frame? Better noise performance in low light conditions is probably the biggest sensor size dependent difference. The FF cameras are typically higher resolution but for the most part we already have enough so the value there is often muted by overkill. There are DOF differences but the advantage can tip either way in that case (less DOF with the larger sensors).

Here's an image from a point and shoot camera with a tiny sensor that is only 10 megapixels and the image is cropped. It would easily hold up printed to 16 x 20.

Let's not get sucked in to MegaPixels. I sold images I took with a D70s DX body that had 6mp. Largest was a 16"x24" shot in JPG.

Thinking about replacing or adding the 24 -30 mm Nikon. Shoot mainly landscape. Your thoughts will be appreciated!

I had this lens (Nikkor 24-300mm) for a short while and was not happy with the soft IQ.

I think there are a few people on this forum who take such great pride in NOT processing the image after it's been taken who's heads will explode when they read this . . . Their loss.

What “those people” don’t realize, or want to realize is that the images they are so proud of NOT PROCESSING have been processed by the on-board software installed in the camera bodies by the manufacturers. Their images are JPGs which have been rendered from the raw data captured by the sensor. The processing is based on algorithms that the engineers decided on to produce images that “most users” would like. It’s the equivalent of a Polaroid compared to film that has to be developed. NOW watch those heads explode!

Is there any benefit of carrying two cameras (D850 and D500), instead of carrying just the D850 and changing to DX mode if more reach is needed? What are the pros and cons other than the ability to use two lenses without changing ?

THIS is a great question. I was using a D300s and a D700 with different lenses mounted for quite a few years. It gave me the ability to shoot wide and tele without changing lenses in the field. A bit bulky perhaps, but I was OK with it to gain the advantages. My last trip with this gear was an excursion to Iceland in 2015. Those in my group who were taking photos were using their phones or PandS's My images are amazing but I was getting bit bogged down by the weight. in January 2016 I sold both bodies and picked up a D810. MUCH more convenient, notwithstanding the lens swapping. Now I generally pick 3 or 4 lenses to shoot with depending on where I'm going. (My arsenal is 11). I keep swapping to a minimum knowing that I can composite or use pano in post. I'll sometimes shoot in DX mode but prefer to composite and crop to maintain high resolution.

Mostly what one hears from photographers, i.e., pro, enthusiast and neophytes, is that the equipment doesn't matter; its the photographer.

Then one has to ask, how many cameras, lenses, flashes, accessories, etc., do you have? Or what cameras or equipment do you lust after?

I think the evidence suggests that gear does matter, although it may not be most important. A skilled lumberjack with an axe will not compete with a man/woman who knows how to use a chain saw.

It is very hard to dispute the logic of this argument. Today’s advanced digital technology makes creating fantastic images so much better than the primitive equipment used in prior decades. It’s just too bad that “photographers” such as Henri Cartier-Bresson and Ansel Adams did not have access to the great stuff we have today. If they had, they may have become famous.

I know this has been done before here, but my search didn't bring up the info I need. Could someone supply me with the link on Adobe to update my LR 6 to 6.14, please. I have a new computer and installed my LR 6, but need to update it. THANKS!

Hmmm. I am currently running LR 6.1.1 which is installed directly on my iMac. It is not a cloud version. Is there an update that I can download which won’t mess up my system? Thanks VERY MUCH. My next step will likely be to go to the subscription version, but I am too comfortable using what I have now....

If your sensor throws away 60% of the frame, how will you ever achieve your potential as a photographer?

I am amateur, amateur. I shoot with the Nikon P1000 and Sony RX100 VI. Both cameras appealed to me because of their RAW capabilities. I have decent competency in Lightroom. My question is: I see minimal difference (if any) after processing RAW and jpeg files. Am I missing something? I don't print; I shoot only to preserve digitally the fine times in my life with family and eye-catching things in nature. Does the better quality show up only in print?

It is not a matter of “quality”. It is a matter of what details can be brought out of a RAW capture that would not be possible once data is discarded by the in-camera processing of the sensor information to produce the JPG. Attached is an example of a RAW capture processed in LR 6.1.1

I'm looking for a top quality Nikon lens for landscape photography. Currently I use the D5600 with the standard kit lenses (18-55 and 70-300) but eventually plan to upgrade the camera body to the D850 once my skills improve. In the meanwhile I want to buy better lenses that I can use now on the D5600 but that also will work well on the D850 later. I shoot mostly nature and wildlife photography (I have a Nikon 200-500 telephoto for wildlife) and am looking for an excellent lens to use for landscape shots. What lenses would you recommend? The Nikon AF-S 24-70 F2.8 ED VR looks good but it's expensive! Is it worth it or are there equally good, more affordable lenses?

I am going to have people who detract from my recommendation but here goes: You have a D5600 crop sensor body. That means that the field of view on a 24-70mm f/2.8 zoom lens will give you an image similar to a 42mm lens on a "full frame" i.e. 35mm film equivalent sensor. That is not the wide-angle that you're looking for. To achieve a wide-angle field of view you will need a lens that has a minimum 14mm to 18mm PHYSICAL focal length. You're next problem is that a DX lens is not the best for you if you plan to go to an FX body at some future point in time. So, what I'd do (and did) is pick up a Nikkor AF-S 17-35mm f/2.8D IF-ED. The IQ is great, build quality is great and use on DX and FX bodies is not a problem. The lens is well made so if you want to economize, a used copy will serve you well.

For the first time, I attached full frame Nikon lenses to the adaptor and was excited to see how they would perform. Well, they didn’t as auto focus was not successful. I changed to a Z lens and auto focus was working fine. Has anyone had the same experience? Is there a ‘button’ that I failed to push?

The lenses that you refer to as “D” (the D just means that the lens communicates distance information to the body so that a compatible speed light can provide more accurate illumination) are AF - autofocus lenses that have a mechanical coupling to a Nikon body with an internal drive motor. Nikon’s Z bodies do not have an internal mechanical drive motor and therefore will not focus AF lenses. The “button” you refer to is the “Purchase” button for new AFS or Z lenses.
