I'm in the middle of an excellent course on Photoshop for Lightroom users by Matt Kloskowski. As he explains some of the tools available he will suggest they are "holdovers". Once a tool has been established at some point in the past, Adobe can't remove it for fear of angering devotees of that tool. The Tone Curve tool is one that Matt suggests is one of those. New tools, or improvements to other tools, have made the Tone Curve less desirable.
Regarding Color and Detail, it varies a lot from image to image. Higher ISOs and lower light produce "color noise" in the shadows. When you look for it, it is obvious. To use the tools, slide them around and see what they do. If not much or you just don't like it, reset that slider.

I agree that Matt's courses in fantastic and well worth the small investment. He is an excellent instructor and the videos are yours to download and keep. I've referred to them many times when I've had Lightroom questions. I'm just starting the Photoshop course.
