I agree with the rent suggestion. I have been on two photo safaris to Africa and took the 2-400 with extender and was happy I did. Even with two bodies, I found the distance varied wildly daily from a few few away to way out there. The 2-400 was excellent for this and can handle extenders too. The other body I used 16-35 and 35-105 lenses. A lot of the vehicles we used had rests built in for sand bags or other rests. For walking around I found the 70-200 best but that is before I got the new 100-400.
Have fun.

I am there now at Rabida. After a nice hike we went snorkeling. If you are going to snorkel also an underwater camera will be useful. Lots of colorful fish, a few sharks rays eels, and today an octopus.
Enjoy!

I am considering moving to the Canon 5IV over the 5III. Have those who have done so found the upgrade worth it in terms of photo quality and features. I take mostly outdoor scenes and some indoor non flash such as museums and low light. Also have the 1DX but the extra weight and size for hiking trails and packing are a consideration. Would anyone think it would be better to upgrade the 1DX over the 5III?

Thanks for the consideration of my questions.

In response to the comment about AC et, when I am on a cruise, which is usually a small boat, I found that I can safely leave my gear outside prior to leaving the ship so it can warm up. The crews are great at watching over things as a rule.

Hello John
I am also going there later this month and will be taking my 5D, 1DX, 16-35, 24-105, 100-400, and an underwater Olympus for snorkeling, and cell phone for those moments when lugging cameras like on board ship may not be handy. Weight restrictions for baggage can be an issue.
I would enjoy hearing of your trip and what you find best.

My wife and I loved Ouray during a short stay there. Worth the trip off the beaten path.

He was great in person. He had my mom on stage at a Tahoe casino show and it was hilarious. I met many so called famous people while working for Bill Harrah but none came close to him.

I'm planning a trip to Alaska with my car and will take the ferry from Seattle through the inland waterways to Skagway or a close by port and drive through the state without the long road trip via Canada. I will take the ferry back from Homer after fishing there.

I have traveled with the Canon 1-400 II a lot and can attest to its build quality. I have shot in the rain and wind and its taken a beating bouncing around without problems. I also have the extender to use with it. Go for the Canon.
Another thing that convinced me was a blog I saw on the deconstruction of the lens and showing superior build quality.

good shots! I seem to remember those trees or some very like them in Sitka. Can't get enough of going to Alaska.

I have a trip coming up to Ecuador soon and fear what they will give me for flights on the free airfare ride. Hopefully there may be an upgrade that won't break the piggy bank. I usually try for the isle seats but these cattle trips don't allow a choice. I find myself at times imagining hearing the mooing herd sound watching the people being herded along.

I have always enjoyed traveling afar, but the airlines have made it so much more unpleasant that I now think twice about the discomfort when deciding what to do. I agree about the overhead being overstuffed by people who don't follow the size limits causing problems.

Dunns River was fun for my wife and I to walk up and have photos of us in them. We also enjoyed a river raft trip when we staying at Couples in Ocho Rios. Enjoy the Red Stripe beer and jerked chicken. Bring home some Blue Mountain coffee for sure as it is very pricey in the US.
