Canon 5III vs 5IV

I am considering moving to the Canon 5IV over the 5III. Have those who have done so found the upgrade worth it in terms of photo quality and features. I take mostly outdoor scenes and some indoor non flash such as museums and low light. Also have the 1DX but the extra weight and size for hiking trails and packing are a consideration. Would anyone think it would be better to upgrade the 1DX over the 5III?

If price / money is an issue, find a lightly used 5DIII now selling for less than $1500 in private sales. Otherwise, go with the newer 5DIV.

IV has significantly better DR, especially in the shadows (better on highlights too but not as big a difference). The AF is a big driver too but if you are in Museums...you probably dont need the superior AF in low light (you may have the patience to MF in low light in a museum). Your call. I have to say, if I had a 5diii and a 1DX, i would be having trouble justifying the 5DmkIV for your needs. Only would do it if I want to pull up the shadows in low light where the 5diii is mush, the IV will have detail.

If you have the funds go for it. I don't think you will be disappointed. I have the 1Dx Mk II since October and love it too. But I came from the 1D Mk III so it is generations newer.

Low light focus is the strength of the 5D MK4 over the MK iii.
I did extensive testing comparing my old iii to the 4 and concluded that the 4 was superior in so many ways including DR, speed and low light focus.
I sold the iii and will add another 4 soon...I also could not justify the image compromise and tended to leave the iii in the bag and change lenses instead.
Huge upgrade in my opinion and not disapointed.

I have the Canon 5D Mark IV. The touchscreen is worth the upgrade. It makes changes in the field very quick and easy.

I have and use both the 5DIII and the 5DIV. The strengths of the IV mentioned above are correct. However I have also found that enlarging small portions of photos taken with the IV are superior, probably because of the nearly 50% increase in megapixel count. I sometimes carry both for quick changes, telephoto on the III and 24-105 or wider on the IV. This served me well, for instance, on a recent trip to Antartica and Argentina.

I have a 1dx. I bought it rather than the 1dx2 because I don't do video and I didn't like the different card slots. I chose it over the 5d4.I'm a press photographer. I wanted something that was very rugged and had a high shutter life expectancy. The camera is everything that I've wanted in a camera. I'm still not sure if it's worth nearly double the price. Batteries are very expensive and you can't use a additional add-on battery pack. It is larger and heavier. It is the camera that I use as my primary camera. I also have 5 ds. One feature I really like in the 1dx is its ability to record audio. This way I don't have to keep a notepad with me. I do know some people that have the camera and don't use that feature. But I really needed it. There other features in it that I really like also. I'm glad I bought it. By the way I saved $2,000 on it so it just cost me a little over 4,000 since it was a discontinued model. That made it more cost competitive to the 5d4.

A brief history. I upgraded my 5D MK III with the 1Dx MK I. When the 5D MK IV came out, I replaced my 7D MK II with the 5D MK IV. If I need high FPS and such, I use the 1Dx. I do not mss the 7D MK II at all.
The dynamic range on the 5D MK IV is far better than the 5D MK III as is the AF system. The AF on the 1Dx MK I is still quicker than the 5D MK IV but the AF on the 5D MK IV is more versatile- all 61 points work at f/8 with 41 cross points. The 5D MK IV has wifi and GPS that both work well. I can live without the touchscreen. I feel the 5D MK IV is a good upgrade to the 5D MK III.
I have used both the 1Dx MK I and 5D MK IV at the same event just to compare them in the 'real world' and found the image quality and noise level to be very comparable. The 5D MK IV does very well considering the additional pixels. The dynamic range on the new 5D MK IV is a great improvement over both the 5D MK III and the 1Dx MK I.

If you are trying to capture action, such as birds in flight the Mark IV is a significantly better bet than the Mark III. It allows you use all of the sensors at F/8, so the significantly faster and better focusing was the deciding factor for me. The focusing also works better in low light.
If these factors are important to you, then it would be worth trading in the Mark III for the Mark IV.

I hit return too fast. My comment regarding better focusing was related to using long lenses with extenders, such as a 500 + 2x. This reduces the largest aperture that can be used to f/8, in which case with the 5d Mark III only the the center focusing spot can made active. This works, but the focusing is a bit slow. With the 5d Mark IV all of the focusing spots can be used and the response is faster.
