My son witnessed this. He was in the NY public library, and a man started taking pictures of his model. She was doing acrobatic poses here and there, and then she began jumping off tables. A librarian told him to stop. "It's a public library, and I'm allowed to take pictures." "Yes, but not jumping off the furniture." "Well, it doesn't say that. It just says no flash photography."

He continued taking pictures in the hall. And we wonder why photographers in general are given a hard time.

My local library has a commercial usage clause in their literature that requires permission and requires a fee if approved by the library board and/or director. This is a good example of why that condition exists, at least at my library. Some people live by the matra: it's easier to apologize for inappropriate action than get permission for it.. and then there are those with no sense of appropriate behavior. Bad reflection on photographers in general.

I know I am going to piss a lot of people off but it is just my thought on misuse of handicap placards. I personally wouldn’t encourage someone who could and should be walking to better their situation (health and mobility) to exploit/abuse the original purpose of handicap placards. I know they are issued to many who have or claim medical limitations that may not be visible to me but I am amazed how most who use them seem quite ambulatory when they are exiting their cars. Seems like most who use them could use a few extra steps in their life’s. I feel the same way about the abuse of bringing any animal in a restaurant or grocery store that isn’t a guide dog or a dog for military PTSD or a dog in training for these tasks. Seriously, I believe these accommodations are very important for those with special needs; the operative word is NEEDS.
I know I am going to piss a lot of people off but ... (show quote)

Doctors determine handicap needs, not the individuals. I go to the gym every day and look very healthy. Having said that, I have chronic heart failure and pulmonary fibrosis. I have a placard for 12 years. Even healthy looking people have serious health issues. I can't do inclines, hills, or stairways. So, the placard identifies the user as handicapped. In order to identify myself as such, outside of the vehicle, the placard serves this purpose. I have no other identification that serves that purpose. It is not a misuse of the placard, but rather a creative and functional use of it. I only encourage people to obtain a placard if there is a health issue. Handicap placards are issued to the individual, not the driver of the car. The restriction is that the handicapped individual needs to be in the vehicle, even though the driver may not be handicapped. This provision is self enforced, with violations frequently noted, as you have. What I have described are ideas and comments on this issue. What works for me may not for you or others. Well, keep shooting until you run out of film. Indiana

I got a eBike to. Use it to get to places, since I have a hard time walking for any distance. It is a great way to haul my equipment and in the meantime even get more exercise.

You have a nice set-up for yourself and your equipment. With your difficulty walking, I would recommend you contact your doctor, explain your mobility problem, and ask for a handicap placard that you can put on a lanyard and wear around your neck while riding. This will avoid any issues of traveling on trails or bike trails where issues may arise concerning your e-Bike. I do this...it works...no one gives me any grief...and everything is good. Even law enforcement is reluctant to deny access to an identified handicapped person.

How do you handle laws that read “No Motorized vehicles allowed.”?

Here is the thing. E-bikes can be ridden without assistance from the battery, or with partial assistance. Motorized vehicles cannot. Battery assist is not the same as motorized. e-Bikes are still new, and agencies are trying to find their way with restrictions and accommodations. So, be informed and stand up for your rights to access. The only real issue is young kids who speed and are reckless users of e-Bikes, but, most kids don't ride e-bikes...they see the e-bikes relegated to old people. Most trails and cities accommodate e-bikes...it is environmentally friendly and encourages people to be active and social. Write your state rep. Letters to the editor are effective. Introduce legislation and just be pro-active. Be a trend setter, and have fun doing it.

Make sure your equipment is packed with lots of padding, a bike has no shocks, and the constant pounding and bumping can cause problems for unprotected electronic equipment.

Not quite true. Most e-Bikes, have shocks on the front, some don't. As with any bike, make sure it is comfortable and suited for your needs. You can also control your comfort, and that of your equipment, by removing some air from the wide tires, making it spongy and soft to ride. I do, and find the ride and equipment do just fine. Try it.

Good idea, however, in our area all electrified vehicles, including bikes, are barred from hiking and bicycle paths. I compromise with a three-wheeler with gears and a large basket for equipment.

Get your Doctor to issue a Handicap Placard and wear it on a lanyard around your neck while you ride. If you pedal a little no one will notice it is an e-bike. No one patrols bike trails...if you are courteous to other travels, no one will care. Some states have specific allowances for e-Bikes on state owned property. I have never seen a bike trail posted . If federal funds are used, access cannot be denied. Push a few buttons...no one will arrest you. Have fun!

So, I bought an e-Bike last year to make it easier to get to photo sites without caring a lot of equipment and walking some distance to the desired location. Since there are a lot of surfaced trails in Indiana, I can travel these ,like the Wabash River Greenway (as an example) or in the state parks to identified sites of interest. It is quick, sweat free, and I can cover a lot of territory in a short period of time on the e-Bike. They are fun to ride, relatively inexpensive ($,1000) and allow quick access to various locations. I have saddle bags and a rack to haul whatever I need. I have a bike rack to haul the e-Bike on my SUV. I have my camera equipment, e-Bike, golf clubs, and fishing equipment in the SUV ready to go. Life is good, enjoy it while you can. At 80, it's important to be active mentally and physically...so, get at it. Indiana.

Going forward, assuming you mean the LR back-up at exit, consider changing the frequency to once a week. Then, let it actually run when you know you won't need LR and / or the computer in general for an hour+ (depending on your total count of images). If that's not the case, just select option 'skip to next week' upon exiting LR. You don't have to wait to next week. When you want to force a back-up, just update the frequency to 'next exit' and exit. This initiates the backup while also maintaining the once-a-week normal processing.

Your images are now on a different drive and / or in a different folder structure.

Are they on an external drive, where maybe the drive letter changed? Say from J to H? Solution: get the drive reconnected with the proper (original) letter.

Are they moved to a different folder. Say \pictures to now \pictures\misplaced-folder? Solution: Move the folders back to the proper structure. Review the folder names inside LR and figure out why that structure no longer exists on your disk.

Have you 'lost' your LRCAT with all the original data? This would be an empty catalog, rather than a catalog with just missing / not-found images. Look in your \backup folder, if you can't determine from the 'modified date' of the LRCAT files when looking in the \pictures\lightroom folder at the *.LRCAT files.

Well, the LRCAT files is where the problem resided. Apparently, I shut the program down during backup and the files were disrupted and never found their home. So, I clicked on the LCAT file that had a thumbtack attached...it open a dialogue box that stated the issue, and it self corrected the problem. On return to LR, all my photos were in their designated place, and once again, there is peace on Earth. Thanks for your help everyone, especially CHG.

What does this have to do with photography?

It's just an observation and sharing of information that Jerry has done for many years in this forum. There is no compulsion to read this post, or any other for that matter. If a reader is not interested in the post, just move on. Too many times comments are made that add nothing of value or actually disparage the post or the poster. If nothing good can be said...say nothing. There is too much negativity in our daily lives...so, let us all show discipline and respect for others and move on together. Have a great day!

Given the number of times we've had this debate about what's ethical in a distributed or exhibited or published (or otherwise made public) photograph, I thought many of you might find the following interesting. Jamie Windsor is a photographer whose channel presentations I've found frequently interesting and always insightful. Here, he weighs in on the question of "cheating" (or not) in photography, pointing to intentional (creative) manipulations in many very familiar photographs. Well, in literature we have genres: fiction, non fiction, biography, creative non fiction, etc., etc. So in literature we have academics classify their production into clearly defined categories which identify the expectations of the reader and the writer, allowing no deception or misrepresentation of the product being presented. So, you know what to expect when you begin the process of reading or writing in a specific category. Perhaps a system in photography would be helpful where a simple symbol would indicate a photographic category eliminating any criticism of staging, manipulation, exagerations, and inserts or deletions. Just my thoughts.

Turned on my Lightroom 6.14 today, and there were no pictures anywhere. Restarted the computer several times and reloaded LR but nothing changed, still no pictures. Before I make a mess of everything, I am looking for advise from HH members. I recall this question being answered before, but I can't find the post or response. Any help would be appreciated. I am not a computer/program guy so I have no idea what happened. When I look at the LR screen, it looks like a template with no photos in it.

And what way have you always gotten with BBB?

I had two members removed from the BBB...the BBB forced these individuals to pay what the owed me...the BBB asked me later if I would OK their reinstatement into BBB, and I said no, and gave them an extensive reason why. I had asked the BBB to intervene on my behalf, and they did. A person needs to think through the entire process, use reason and logic in your defense, anticipate a rebuttal argument, and be firm, logical and persuasive in your own defense. Write your complaint, follow up, and stay committed to the outcome that favors your position. Remember, the BBB does not want bad publicity, and the suggestion of writing a letter to the editor or securing the advise of an attorney, may be all you need to get their attention. I have used these tactics effectively in my business dealing with the BBB, even out of state, and I have always received satisfaction. So, stay calm, state your case logically and persuasively, be prepared to deal with the rebuttals, and be firm in your position and the anticipated outcome that favors your position. Be committed!

Over the years the BBB has become totally useless. Contacting them is an exercise in futility,,

Not exactly...if you know the words to use. Look at the mission statement, who they represent, what they represent, and what they tell the public about their members and membership in general. If they fail to respond, it constitutes misrepresentation, breach of contract, and unethical practice on their part. Always got my way with BBB, because I understood their vulnerability. Remind them of who they are, their representation, and their reputation.
