Taking Surveys

I got an invitation to take a survey about lending. Not exactly sure what they mean by that, but it seems like a stupid idea for a survey. If I qualify, they will send me a $10 Gift Card. After finishing the ten-minute survey, they will tell me that I don't qualify.

I don't see most surveys as being useful, except to gather information about the people taking the survey. Ah, I just got it. By "lending," they mean financially, since this is from Citibank. I get email and snail mail from Citibank every single day. They must have a huge printing and postage budget.

Speaking of qualifying, I've begun some surveys, and as soon as I tell them my age, I don't qualify. Kinda depressing.

I find that with most of the surveys I receive, the last thing is "Thank you for taking this survey, it will be helpful and could you send us some money" which actually was the purpose of the mailing in the first place.

Any legitimate survey will
A) not ask for money, and
B) not ask for personal identification information.

It's just an observation and sharing of information that Jerry has done for many years in this forum. There is no compulsion to read this post, or any other for that matter. If a reader is not interested in the post, just move on. Too many times comments are made that add nothing of value or actually disparage the post or the poster. If nothing good can be said...say nothing. There is too much negativity in our daily lives...so, let us all show discipline and respect for others and move on together. Have a great day!

If your email program has a configurable spam filter, just send to spam any email that has the word 'survey' in the title or in the body.

I am signed up with a legitimate survey/focus group company. Over the years I have gotten several focus groups, either in person, or since Covid, by Zoom, which paid good money. Many of them have a short survey to see if you qualify, either to take a longer survey or participate in a focus group. I don't qualify for a lot of them, but it is worth it for the ones I do. My profile includes health information, and I often get surveys on the subject of diabetes, which I have. It is well under control with oral medication and diet, but usually they ask if you are taking insulin, and that's where I don't qualify. I guess they need people who have it worse than I do.

You have been a member for over eight years. By now you should know that the chit chat section is for non photograph discussions. As far as what this has to with photography, photographers also receive surveys and some of them might want to vent about the annoyance to other photographers.

Correct. As a retired market research guy, I will just point out that businesses rely on some all kinds of data gathering to make some pretty big decisions. And professional market research companies are in business to provide the best information possible. Market research gets a bad name when surveys are used for fundraising or other bogus activities. It also pains me when I see poorly written, untested, surveys put out by people who don’t know what they are doing, or should know better.

Surveys often involve pictures, and it's fun to guess what brand and model camera took the pictures. When you get good at this, you can guess the settings the photographer used.
