My Canon 7D Mk ii paired with the 100-400 ii lens has developed a bit of a focusing issue. I depress the shutter button halfway to initiate focus, and the lens zooms in and then zooms back out to a complete blur, failing to achieve focus. It occurs on more than one focus point. It’s intermittent—that is, it doesn’t happen consistently, but happened a whole lot in my last shoot. Cause and solution anyone?

Thanks.

I had focus problems from day 1 of the purchase of my 7Dii. Mainly with single point, always front focusing and soft at 100% zoom. It came to a climax last year when my focal point display went out. It was a 225 dollar repair from Canon at the time. They replaced the focal point board and one of the processors. It doesn't miss a lick now. I was on the verge of selling it. It is indispensable now.

Frank, first off I am sorry I missed your original post. I would have gladly contributed. I shoot Professional Rodeo. Spring and summer I travel most weekends to rodeos. When you are ready for round two let me know. I had a friend like you once. We all ways thought we would grow old and live in the same neighborhood for life. Sadly I lost him suddenly sometimes back. Keep up the good work.

Mine did that once. The focal points also disappeared off the screen. Sent it in to Canon they replaced the focal screen and one of the processors. Came back better than new.

Leave it in AI Servo. I never switch when in studio.

Here is a recent one. When shooting sports I carry multiple cameras with different lenses. You have to be able to grab one and shoot. Typically I turn the auto off selection to off from two minutes. Two of my bodies have a bad habit of turning them selves on when transporting in my backpack. Recently flew to Arlington TX for a 2 day rodeo and I had forgot to turn the auto off feature back to two minutes when transporting and both bodies were dead and I had a full days shooting ahead of me with one extra battery. Thank god for outlets along the walls at Cowboy Stadium.

I have shot many PRCA Rodeos for media. I check with the PRCA once in becoming an official photographer for them and the things you have to do and the investment and hurdles you have to jump are more ridiculous than concert photography with the divas. One thing to note here in this conversation. Almost any shot you take at a PRCA Rodeo their Trademarked logos are in the background and on the riders. That's what they are protecting, the "Brand."

"Was told today that they can no longer allow photographers inside fence as of this year. I'm in the state of Utah but was told it was nationwide."

Those decisions are made by the AD and the Umpires unless state championships, only media allowed. State Tournaments will have a contracted exclusive photographer. Being media I spend time in both dugouts, some fields will have media boxes drawn. I have shot in three states this year.

This is wonderful! What you could do is assure the file is named 'jpg' and not modified to 'JPEG' during your processing. With the more universal file extension, the thumbnail will appear for the attachment when posted to UHH. (You have nearly 60-minutes after creating a post where you have access to an <Edit> button where you can remove this attachment and add another as a replacement.)

You might also crop this image much closer, placing the athlete to the left 1/3 vertical of the frame (from the near center position of this version) and placing the names of hurdles along the lower 1/3 guide line. This would remove all the background, simply through elimination. Use a 'modern' 16:9 aspect.

If repeating, I'd simply repeat this image, trying to capture the full image closer to the suggested crop above. You'll likely need to stand closer rather than extending the focal length, maybe both. Will the evening light shine into his eyes? Can you go manual with the same aperture, but force a faster shutter, even is just to 1/640? Do you have a single point or small group focused on his face? With the plan to position the athlete to the left within the frame, position yourself, your camera / tripod, and the AF point all to the 'left' to capture the image in the camera closer to the intended result. If the athlete is willing, work this shot repeatedly at different apertures. If you can hit his face in perfect focus, I'd be interested of the results at f/5 rather than f/9 of this version, another effort to minimize the background in a more artistic way.

You have motion blur in the extremities. I shoot sports as a second job for several media outlets. I don't believe I have ever had a situation that called for F9 when the subject is in motion. And anything below 1/1000 shutter speed is risking motion blur. One of the most important things in shooting sports is to separate the subject from the background. Go to manual, open up the F Stop to F 2.8 or F 3.5 leave it on Auto ISO. Make sure you are on AI Servo and Case 4. Use the single focusing point with the 8 surrounding points and put it center mass of the chest and get low.

Great explanation. Thanks.

I am a media sports photographer. My workflow has to be fast and efficient. Adobe Camera Raw, I like the simplicity of it over Lightroom. Also I create filters with in it for different venues and save them for when I return for other projects. I have a considerable amount of software I have accumulated over the years other than Photoshop that assists me in most situations. Any adjustment or action within Photoshop is non destructive if using the layers options.

You can still retrieve them from the SD card. There are plenty of free SD Card Recovery programs out their that work. You will be shocked at what it recovers off the card when you think it was deleted or re-formatted.

I use Photoshop Creative Cloud (PS CC) and I am curious about this. Adobe Camera Raw is included as part of PS CC.

Is that what you are referring to when you said Photoshop Raw?

What version of PS do you have?

19.1.8 Photoshop CC. Look in your Adobe Creative Cloud under apps. you can download it there. It's a plug in, in your filter tab. You can go between Photoshop and Camera Raw as much as needed.

Use AI Clear instead of AI Sharpen. And it isn't your gear making it run slow. I have a gaming computer for processing and I dumped the trial in just a few days. The program was released way early before the bugs got worked out. I don't even sharpen any more because of AI Clear. And you can Batch with the studio program using AI Clear.
