So...here are some samples of the 500+ shots.
Question to the group.... Appears to have some glare on faces from the SB-5000.
I was using the SB-5000 with built-in diffuser and white card for bounce flash. Would a diffuser (looking at at Fong product, but also checked www.aliexpress.com and they are half the Fong price) diminish that facial glare?
The depth of Field is noticeable in some of these shots, but the detail and color just POP!
Wonder what it would have looked like with the 24-70, although this 28-300 walkabout lens did a great job!
Comments welcome!
So...here are some samples of the 500+ shots. br Q... (show quote)

Did you edit these? They seem to have a very red overtone. The meat table looks like a lot of rare meat (which I would love!). With regard to flash, in my opinion anything except bouncing off the ceiling at that close range is going to be overpowering. Not sure you can dial down the power enough short of using high speed sync.

Great set, that lens with the 850 looks like a winning combination. The water in photo #1 is beautiful, it could have been its own great photo if no birds were present.

Thanks! I know, sometimes the water reflections are a beautiful painting themselves.

Great shots -can't imagine they could get much sharper!

Thanks! It was better than I had hoped, given how heavy that lens is and prone to magnify any vibration.

Beautiful shots. Looks like an excellent combination.

I have an album of pics called, "Before the Ducks Wake Up" - a good time to catch the critters.

Thanks! Unfortunately, that's the time I wake up every day. Hard to take the military out of the man.

Just got my D850 this week so decided to take a couple shots in the back yard during the early morning hours. Not sure this lens resolves perfectly with the camera, but not too bad. I fine tuned the lens a little afterward against a tuning target. We'll see how it works with the super moon tomorrow night.

YM Camera is third generation owned and operated. I guess the purpose of my post is to let anybody who's frustrated waiting on the big retailers that there is another option (after rereading my original post, it came off kind of braggy). I PMed them on Facebook, got an answer back almost immediately and ordered from their website.

Buy local = good!
Enjoy your new purchase.

Not quite local for me (Virginia Beach), but I like supporting small businesses.

I sold my D810 in anticipation of getting the D850. It took a full three months to arrive. Meanwhile my D500 made the wait bearable.

I think my D500 will still get some use. I'm not digging the nearly $1000 additional cost to bring the D850 from 7 to 9 fps.

For those who may still be waiting on the big store lists, I had originally ordered a D850 from Adorama but no prospective delivery date on the horizon. Canceled and ordered through YM Camera, a small business out of Youngstown, OH on 11 November. Received my camera today (30 November). After ordering, I received emails from the store's VP letting me know the status (including an apology that he couldn't get me one from the batch he received a couple days after my order!). I'm liking the small business drive there.

I wonder if the first responder who said the Tokina was sharp but didn't like the focus had an early version with no motor. I don't think the D3300 has a motor in the body.

The D3300 does not. I was thinking the same thing.

I have the Tokina 11-16 2.8 and it focuses sharp as heck on both D7200 and D500. Mine is an earlier lens without an autofocusing motor, so on your camera you would have to manual focus; however, with an ultrawide lens like that, you are focusing to infinity at about 6 feet, so manual focus is a no-brainer.

Are you referring to the optical viewfinder? If so, there is a little switch that closes it.

Most tripod mounting plates have a D-ring on them. Attach one to the bottom of your camera and tie a length of sturdy line to it with a loop at the bottom for your foot. Make sure you have enough line to that the camera can come up to your natural place for shooting (you can always loop and knot it if it's too long). After putting foot through loop, raise camera up. I think it's easier to fight gravity with tension than without.
