For the last few years, I have been the roving party photographer at at local law firm's annual Open House.
Always shooting my Nikon D800 with the 28-300 F3.5 lens and an SB-910, I shot roughly 500 images.
Yesterday, I shot the even with my new D850, same 28-300 lens and an SB-5000.
The unsolicited few people who have seen the images on-line remarked, "These are the best shots you have ever taken of this group." "These pictures are so much better than the ones before." "We don't know what you did, but this years pics are much improved!"
Methinks this to be a case of the arrow improving the archer!
The D850 ROCKS!

So what do you think the difference is?
Your technique?
Your D850?
Your new SB 5000 flash?

I don't doubt that the 850 made a difference; but because I have GAS for one, I wish you could be more specific about the difference.

Please let me try....
1. Much quicker to focus. I got a facial shot and a torso shot zooming within a half second. The 28-300 was the perfect walk-about lens.
2. Color saturation was deeper and more natural.
3. Setting for Aperture priority with an F4-F5.6 allowed be to achieve a bokeh effect, letting the camera and flash work out the shutter speed and exposure. Also tried the P mode which was KenRockwell simple.
4. The Facial Focus setting was spot-on. Always got the eyes sharp and clear. One shot had a subjects eyes closed so the camera seemed to focus on his proboscis.
5. The MB-D18 allowed me to shoot all 500+ shots without a battery change.
6. The SB-5000 did the entire party without overheating and on one set of batteries.
7. The new grip was comfortable and hand holding for over 4 hours was not an issue.
That's what I can come up with intitially! Far superior to my D800.
Jump on Kmgw9v....you'll never look back.

You have the D850, with 45.7 megapixels, the most expensive Nikon Flash, the SB-5000. A friend I know owns the FX 28-300mm. He loves it. You claim you've been doing this for several years. You appear to be a skilled photographer, so one would expect your images would be better. Yes, based on the written reviews, and reviews by uhh members, the D850 does indeed Rocks! As you say. Enjoy your new D850.

And I was also shooting in the medium .JPG mode. Even then, the files were 10+ mb. I usually shoot both .JPG and RAW but for this, .JPG was even overkill!
And I currently own the Nikon lens Trilogy plus other Nikon glass, but the 28-300 gets far more use. It was the first FX lens I bought and still LOVE it.

Nothing that medication and a few $$s cannot cure...

*ahem*.... So you cut the balls out of an outstanding camera and says it still sings well? Falsetto like the Eunuch slaves of jadis?

Sorry but when I get this camera, I am not about to cut its potential for any reason.

And I usually shoot RAW and .jpg...but for these folks, it would have unwise space on my 12 tb of hard drive space.

So...here are some samples of the 500+ shots.
Question to the group.... Appears to have some glare on faces from the SB-5000.
I was using the SB-5000 with built-in diffuser and white card for bounce flash. Would a diffuser (looking at at Fong product, but also checked www.aliexpress.com and they are half the Fong price) diminish that facial glare?
The depth of Field is noticeable in some of these shots, but the detail and color just POP!
Wonder what it would have looked like with the 24-70, although this 28-300 walkabout lens did a great job!
Comments welcome!
