Skinning cats...comes to mind! Apparently there are lots of ways to do it!

As a young person I only needed to know HOW....Shown or by step by step instruction.
Later I was shown alternatives!!!

Now I find 'Life has moved on'....what I knew then is no longer relevant....

As one gets older....it is not wisdom you have....it is outdated or irrelevant information.

Who knows how...or even if...we will be doing things 'properly' in the next twenty years!

have fun....if you can remember how to!

Henry Ford said "History in Bunk"...apparently!
History is written (and rewritten) in order to make justifications for certain actions. Germany tried this by burning books so that they could re-write history. That went well!

It is often a case of: Not what you read...but why was it written?

It was a ships bell....made to ring the changes of watches on board The Liberty....anything else is Bunkum.

Have fun

Promotion revenue?
in character reference....why are farmers always in tweed on UK telly? Most wear a one piece jump suit...

no idea - I don't own one!

Don't you just love people who try to 'justify' the pleasure people take in k*****g things....as a chef I know all about 'where the meat comes from'....including how it is slaughtered. In over 50 years I have never seen a selfie inside an abattoir....! Nor a sheepskin complete with the head....

If it isn't part of your job to replace those that are k**led.....keep out of its life cycle.

The building site is private property....so no automatic rights to take pictures on there.
Health and safety issues about climbing to any height - on a building site.(usually only specific named crew)
Co-workers may not want you to photograph them.
If you are not building site staff......no right to access. If not your allotted work place ....no access accepted on anyone's liability insurance.
My son works on high buildings....one contractor almost sacked him for taking 'selfies' at work....where he was contracted to work!...not take photo's on his phone.
Construction Industry is the second most life threatening Industry after Agriculture in the UK (highest number of fatal work place accidents for the last few decades)

does that help?

Stay safe

On my crop sensor cameras I use the 18 - 55 almost exclusively. Advice is to use the 2nd lowest ISO setting (so get a tripod). Rarely can you hand hold for landscape. Too high ISO and noise makes it look out of focus....Soft....Many landscapes are made using long exposures with a one stop or two stop neutral density filter. A CP filter can also be a good thing to have with you.

A lot of members list their camera kit. A 'Private message' (like an email on here) will cut down the amount of irrelevant posts should your queries or problems be kit associated.

The chit chat forum has a lot of 'free association' with members talking about both 'off photography' topics as well as the broader 'interest in photography related minutia'. Personal views and attitudes are probably more tolerated here. Opinions always vary considerably,,,,,, such is life! - Chit chat is a catch all forum - explore the other forums - you may find a better response.

Advice can be blunt, or irrelevant to what you were hoping to receive. We are all anonymous as such....we really do not know who - is on here. Unlike in Real Life....Where we choose our friends....here you are stuck in the middle of strangers....It takes time to get to know who is worth reading and who you can safely pass over.

As a Photography Forum....No-one has ever suggested that they had found - or used regularly - any other open photography forum.....! NOT that it is a case of 'like it or lump it'......merely use it 'with a pinch of salt', Not everyone would be your best friend 'in real life'.

have fun,

I had lightroom 6. It was a pain to set up and most 'alterations' used my PSE as an 'add on'. In a fit of stupidity I put my name on one image and LR decided to put it on all of them...never did learn how to remove it - as links people said were there - i couldn't get to work.

I use darktable because its raw processing appears closer to the jpg than UFraw. I too swopped to linux.....it has a great selection of image manipulation software free to use. It can be run in a partition with Windows.

I have a simple filing system based on year, place, object (person etc)....and delete a lot of images that I am not instantly happy with (I did originally think that I would re-visit them to fix, but frankly life is too short) So having lots of Key word search capability is not my thing....LR does this well!!!if that is your requirement. Dark table will search your files in whatever 'system' you use.

Your image files do not reside in any program.....they get 'associated' with programs to open them. If your images get downloaded to User, home files(or similar) pictures....that is where they will always reside - catalogues only 'lose' images that you move outside of the catalogue. So you can safely use Darktable and if you do not like it - simply uninstall it....your images will be safe!

have fun for free......

In fact try out all the free ones before you spend any cash....depending upon your needs - some of the smaller programs may 'do for you' for a while and you will quickly learn tools and 'effects' and be able to 'think through' the different tool names that each program uses. That bit isn't rocket science------getting the right final image can be.

I loved the 'personnel protection equipment' White painted cap. booties and shirtsleeves. Plus mandatory cigarettes.

It predates the concerns about global freezing when we were searching for ways to grow food under artificial lighting....plus build cities underground.

As part of NATO I wonder how many servicemen were 'Arctic Trained' from there?

I suppose it became redundant when submarines were able to circumnavigate the Arctic ice cap and 'pop up' as and when required.

Thanks for sharing

it is going to be a gas guzzler - not electric....! Not that there is a limit to electric ....186,000 miles per second...669,600,000 miles an hour (my calculator has 3 spaces left for technology to 'improve'.

They will make 3 to be sold at a phenomenal price to someone who keeps it in a secure lockup in the hope that the tax man hasn't noticed!

It depends upon the society in which you stand and how much money you have to show you have.
Art has always been a rich person's way of telling everyone that they are cultured.
Photography (from the right source) was a less financial strain, but had to be 'peer reviewed'.
Today 'anything' gets 'liked'.....the more 'likes' the more 'important' to advertisers. - Who have lots of money to spend!

Somewhere I saw photographic “content” defined as the “subject, topic or information captured in a photograph”, the “subject” being “the main object or person(s)” in the image.

We see a lot of discussion of the importance of sharpness, exposure and composition of an image but I’ve seen relatively little talk of content. How important is content relative to the technical merit of a photograph? What does it take for the content of a photograph to cause viewers to overlook technical deficiencies?

I believe content is the most important attribute of a photograph. In my view, sharpness, perfect exposure, composition, etc, as important as they are, are of no value if a photograph doesn’t have a content that grabs the viewer. On the other hand, there is a limit to how many technical flaws a viewer can tolerate before even great content becomes irrelevant. I’m interested in your views on this. Feel free to post any images you think might help illustrate this topic. I will do so in my next post.

I appreciate any constructive comments you might have.
Somewhere I saw photographic “content” defined as ... (show quote)

Who suggests it is a flaw - the self styled critic or the general public. Is 'Perfection' the ultimate aim ? Or is the photograph 'Iconic.'
Look at old images taken in film that are classed as 'important ' and ask yourself 'do you like it?'. Given today's software, exactly how much difference would you expect to make and would it 'improve ' it's standing in the eyes of those who made it important.

Photography is a mix of science and emotion. The why - of what can become an iconic image is going to be a debate.

In the UK I think it is 1 in 6 couples who cannot conceive together for a variety of reasons. We also have draconian adoption 'rules' for traditional married couples - but easier rules for gay couples. Surrogacy has been a 'solution' for many years. That way the people involved know who 'helped'. I understand that in The US you have to have a blood test prior to marriage in some states - surely this should decrease any problems for the children concerned.
I find it strange that most opponents to both IVF and Surrogacy are predominantly Male. The 'half' that cannot childbear.....
