I bought a RX10iii second hand from Ebay & love it. It has lots of hidden features. Buy Alexander S Whites book which will reveal them to you. Engage its Clear Image Zoom & you will be amazed. The first photo was with D7100 + Sigma 150-500 (= 750mm), the second with the Sony at full Clear Image Zoom (= 1200mm). You can set various buttons for various functions (e.g. focus area & ISO) & I have the centre button set to Zoom Assist which, at large zoom, brings the lens back so you can find an object (e.g. a bird) which you have lost track of; the zoom returns to full when you release the button.
My Nikon is used mainly for wildlife & it (+ now the Sony) will continue to go on safari with us (they drive you!) but for locally, when I have to walk, I shall probably leave Nikon at home & just take Sony.
I bought the Darrell Young book for the D7100. Indispensible!
Another of those annoying replies which is not a direct answer! I have D7100 + Sigma 150-500 for wildlife. The Nikon is getting heavier so I have just bought a used Sony RZ10iii from Ebay & love it. It almost matches the Nikon!!! The Nikon will continue to go an safari with us (they drive you!) but for wildlife around home, when I have to walk, I'll be tempted to leave Nikon at home & take the Sony. Sony is 28-600 equivalent & doubles to 1200mm with its "Clear Image Zoom" which is hard to distinguish from the Nikon at 750 equivalent. The Sony may be worth a look before you make a final decision.
I've had the TZ30 (TS20 in US) [20x zoom] for 5 years & love it. My daughter has had the TZ60 (30x zoom) for a couple of years & similarly loves it. You can't go wrong with these.
I have D7100 + Sigma 150-500 for wildlife. I've just bought a Sony RX10iii used from Ebay & am amazed by it. At maximum zoom (+ enhanced digital zoom) it's hard to tell the difference to Nikon. I'm completely sold on the Sony. The Nikon will still go on safari & small expedition ships (they drive you on both so no carrying!) but for wildlife around home involving walking, it'll be the Sony.
First photo is Nikon, 2nd is Sony
I have D7100 + Panasonic Lumix TZ30 (pocket camera), both of which have served me well. However, the D7100 is getting heavier (or, more likely, I'm getting older with neck problems) with its Sigma 150-500. I've just plumped for a RX10iii (used from Ebay) & love it. As you say the shots at 600mm are stunning & the rest of the camera is awe-inspiring; this cropped moon shot was hand held! I'll still take the Nikon on safari (we've done quite a few &, of course, they drive you!) but, for walk-about at wildlife parks or zoos it's going to be the Sony.
I'm not going to make a habit of this but I couldn't resist this one (UK Daily Telegraph)
Either "Magna Carta" or "The Great Charter" but not THE Magna Carta
I wouldn't dare comment from this side of the Atlantic (from today's UK Daily Telegraph)!
In the Daily Telegraph (one of our national dailies) yesterday. Posted without comment!
Go for a small ship cruise (up to c.90 passengers) with an expedition team on board; the team members will accompany you in small groups on shore or out in zodiacs & will provide lectures when on board. They are obviously more expensive but well worth the extra. A small ship can stop or turn round if whales or dolphins are spotted & will get you into many more interesting places where the large ships can't go - & when you get ashore there aren't 2,000 of you! We did this & never regretted the extra cost.
There's no additional cost in the change from maroon to blue:

Another example of 'fake news' going viral?
When we went to the palace for my wife's investiture we asked one of the other guests if he would take a photo of the four of us with her Nikon D90. This is what he took!
Fortunately we do have plenty of other pictures of the day.

I have the Lumix DMC-TZ30 (UK designation - TS20 in US) with 20x zoom & love it & it's still going strong after four years (now out of production). Daughter has TZ60/ZS40 with 30x zoom - I think this is exactly what your friend is looking for. There are now TZ70, 80 &, I think, 100.
