Just returned from 3 week driving trip in Europe--using the RX-10 for the first time. Since I got a fair amount of information here about the camera before I bought it, I thought I would add an opinion.
Background, I'm an amateur photographer who prefers landscape and street photography. My previous camera was a Canon 7D with, 24-105 and 70-300 pro glass. I don't "set up" shots-- as I travel I attempt to capture what appears before me.
With that in mind, the RX-10 was amazing--the quality is plenty good for print (I use a Canon Pro-1000), but the range is the clincher. I was able to grab so many shots that could never have happened with the Canon because I would too often have the wrong lens available. Going hand held at 600 equivalent I was able to focus quickly and the stabilization worked very well, the shots at that length were a tad soft, but very useable.
Not suggesting the quality is as good as the Canon produced, but the ability to get those shots with a camera that you can easily carry while walking all day cancels that out. If I was a pro, who would stage his shots, I would definitely use a SLR, but for good quality travel shots, this cam is very, very good.
Anyway, have enjoyed reading the board for the past few months, thanks for the good info.
We went too many places. Did about 3,000 KM in 19 driving days from Frankfurt to Frankfurt. Saw a fair amount of southern Germany and Switzerland, and dipped toes into Austria, Italy, France, Luxembourg and Belgium. Too much for my taste, but hard not to see just one more town/city.
I’m a big fan of the RX10ii, which I just gave to my grandson, and have been flirting with the iv.

I have D7100 + Panasonic Lumix TZ30 (pocket camera), both of which have served me well. However, the D7100 is getting heavier (or, more likely, I'm getting older with neck problems) with its Sigma 150-500. I've just plumped for a RX10iii (used from Ebay) & love it. As you say the shots at 600mm are stunning & the rest of the camera is awe-inspiring; this cropped moon shot was hand held! I'll still take the Nikon on safari (we've done quite a few &, of course, they drive you!) but, for walk-about at wildlife parks or zoos it's going to be the Sony.
I've the rx10iii and it's a amazing travel camera! I also use it when birding. Pretty hard to beat for those purposes.
