Just looking for alternate opinions on this.

I decided a year plus ago to sell my D800 and get a Z6 with 24-70. Sold a few F mount lenses with or after, such as AF 50 mm and 28-300. Bought the 24-200 last fall and decided the 24-70 ought to go so it is at MPB for sale.

Also got the Z50 with two lens kit (16-50 and 50-250) last fall. Impressed by it so gave my D5600 and 18-300 to my daughter-in-law. I have 10-24 which I can use with it with FTZ but generally prefer FX for wide angle so won’t use it much. It plus FTZ is big and heavy.

Decided I’m going to take only the Z6 on major upcoming trip involving air travel. But needed a wide angle because 16-35 + FTZ too large and heavy. So now have Z 14-30, which is nice and will do the job for the trip. So with it I no longer need the 16-35, so it is at Adorama for sale.

Decided yesterday I needed to try some images with the F mount Macro 105 on the Z6, which required the FTZ. The FTZ was on the 200-500 attached to Z50 for birds. It was a multi step process to get the switch done. I get annoyed by fussing.

While looking at KEH site for status on my Z 24-70 I noted a like new D610 could be had for about $500. Subtract the $300+ they’ll give for the 24-700 it can be had for a little over $200. And my Z6 batteries work with it.

Adorama has my 16-35 but hasn’t gotten back to me yet on final price. It will be about $500. But I can tell them no thanks and they’ll ship it back.

Thoughts on choices.

PS: I am inclined to be frugal but money isn’t an issue here. I always compare my photography hobby to past endeavors like boats and ATVs...and don’t come close.

Jeff, greetings from a namesake (but spelled with a "G") from a well-locked down UK.

I want to wish you well with your up-coming op - but yes, you'll certainly have some time to get a good handle on "mirrorless" as you recuperate.

I read that you've been a Nikon user all your "hobby life" - would I be right to assume you're aware of your fellow American Nikon "guru" Thom Hogan ? Celebrated for his 20+ yrs as a Nikon user and creator of "guides" for Nikon cameras.

What you may be less aware of is that Thom has been writing about mirrorless cameras for some considerable time now in his second website ........ http://www.sansmirror.com/newsviews/

When Nikon finally decided they'd better get properly involved in full frame mirrorless (after Sony had jumped the gun and stolen a march not only on them but on Canon also) and launched their "Z"-series, Thom decided to launch a third website purely for Nikon's "Z"-series cameras. I think you could do a lot worse while you're recuperating than to fully immerse yourself in this site. Many things have been said on this UHH site, and on many others, by folks about mirrorless cameras - and many comments have been proven to be way off "the truth", and for all sorts of reasons.

I just want to point you in the right direction to get the right answers about Nikon's "Z" cameras and lenses. Yes there are a few on here now who can and will, I hope, give you valid opinions, but would suggest that you also use Thom's "Z" series site as a major mainstay.

First, here's what he says about the FTZ adapter and how you can, or cannot, use your F mount lenses ..... note, this was way back in early Sept 2017 ......

http://www.sansmirror.com/lenses/lens-database/lenses-from-camera-makers/nikon-z-mount-lenses/ftz-adapter-compatibility.html

And here's the link to his Z Mount User System site .....

https://www.zsystemuser.com/

I used to use Nikon, but added Fuji X-series to my D700 back in 2013, used both systems alongside each other until 2016, before finally deciding the X-Series Fujis were "good enough" for me ......

Good luck with your op, and have fun learning ..... !!

I received a new X100-V for Christmas. Love the camera, but recently if I am within three feet or so of my subject, a “Focus error” message appears on the Screen, the camera locks up, and must be turned off and turned on again to function.

Has anyone else run across this problem? Very strange.

I'm a long-term Fuji X-T user, had an X100T, but don't have your new model.

However, looking thro' the online X100V manual The Shooting Menus (AF/MF Settings) I see a number of things you might check .....

1) AF-C Custom Settings / Focus Tracking Options (Zone Area Switching) - choose where focus priority is made - front, auto, centre.

2) Release/Focus Priority - common to all digital cameras, I believe - choose whether focus or shutter release is prioritised in AF-S and AF-C modes.

3) AF Range Limiter - gives you 4 options.

What with "touch screen" AF options as well these menus are certainly growing and need to be familiarised !

Great camera now in it's 5th generation and with a huge Fuji following. Hope you get things fixed !

I have recently purchased Fuji X100V camera with aim to expand my horizons into street photography. I have couple questions about the camera:
1. Is there a lens cap available that fits over the Fuji adapter/protective filter combo? The cap that comes with the camera doesn't fit after adding the adapter and filter.
2. I've been starting by manually selecting the aperture and setting both shutter speed and ISO to Auto. While composing the image, I've noticed on the real LCD display that the shutter speed adjusts according to the light conditions but the ISO number stays at the Max number allowed. In reality, both SS and ISO are adjusted properly on the captured image but it's confusing looking at the display prior to pressing the shutter which suggests the Max ISO.

Steve, New Year greetings to you and yours from Robin Hood Country in the UK. I've found the best unbiased info on Nikons to be from one of your fellow Americans - Thom Hogan.

May I respectfully suggest you immerse yourself in Thom's "Z System" website and I think you'll find most of the answers you seek .......

Does the FTZ adapter really work, I am a skeptic and it is what is keeping me from making the jump to mirrorless, that and the cost of investing in "Z" lenses. Grrrrrrrrrrr...........!!!!!!!!!!! My primary lenses are Nikon 24-70 f/2.8 non VR and Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 current iteration; I use them on both a crop sensor and full frame Nikon body. I shoot some video with both bodies and an occasional time lapse with the full frame so video performance is important as well.

Here are some links to articles and reviews by Thom Hogan, who knows a lot about Nikon and Sony.

If you want to stick with Nikon, you have two paths to take. The one you have been on, with mirrors and then mirrorless. I much prefer (for now) the path with mirrors and viewfinders. My two bodies I use today are the D500 and D850. When Nikon comes out with their next mirrorless cameras, (in a few weeks) I might start down the mirrorless path.

Newcomers beware. I think it's SO important to get real-time, hands on opinions from those who own and use said equipment...just this Z6 thread alone is populated with many posts from those whose only clue to the camera itself is stat sheets. From what "I'm" reading, those who own the camera like it alot! Heck, just the other day I was out with the Z6 shooting around, with my 70-200 VII f2.8 hooked via the FTZ adapter, ended up doing some surfing shots at 12fps with great results...not as good as my D5, but I don't have a qualm if the Z6 is the only body I have at the moment...heck, it's close! I'm not saying it's anything but what it is; an outstanding camera which I've owned since December 2018.

Nice comment, Charlie - and I'm with you all the way. The Z6 is what is is now - and different with regard to autofocus from what it was in Dec '18. The originator of this post is asking for comments, I'm sure, about what it is now, not 2 years ago.

Enough said - I have no need to comment further.

At this point, I'm going to wait until October when Nikon's second generation Z6s and Z7s cameras come out. I'd like to re-evaluate then. They're supposed to have dual Expeed processors. Dual processors is part of what makes the autofocus in the D5, D500, and D850 so good. They have a processor that is dedicated solely to the autofocus system.

Understood ! And I hope you're able to find the answers you seek when next you get your hands on a Z camera. It's always comforting to discover that Nikon, just like the manufacturer I use, is discovering the value of substantial firmware updates to their customer base, to customer perceptions of them and to the success of their products. What is also important is that new and relatively new members here are not fed info which might have been the case in December 2018, but has been proven (through firmware updates and many differing sources) to no longer be the case. I hope that we longer-term members understand and appreciate that - heck we were all in the same boat as the OP at some stage.

For info (or check my posting history) my mission here is to learn and, if possible, help others learn from my own experiences. I also have learned that, with the huge base of members, there are also likely to be the fan boys for whom, no matter what, "their manufacturer" always has been, still is, and always will be "top of the heap" - I saw it when I joined in 2012, and it's still evident today. For some reason they get their kicks out of such a stance. After a while those with a little "nous" (practical intelligence) learn and decide upon the importance and value to us of those "messages".

Funnily enough only today I got a message today from a good friend, a long-term US UHH member, a pro, and known to many here, that he would be interested in a Z6 - gotta say something to y'all, eh what?

UK today about to embark once more on more serious "Covid restrictions". I sense all is not well for the US too - take the precautions we all know about, look after yourself and loved ones - teach the young - and survive. Then we can all enjoy our hobby the way we want.

Should I upgrade my camera?

Am thinking about a Z6 with 24-70 f/4 kit lens; feed back on IQ with that lens, please. Anyone do any low light, night time and/or astrophotography with a Z6 and that kit lens? Can that lens be set up for full manual focusing?

I have several Nikkor manual focus lenses from film days, will they work on a Z6 with the FTZ adapter?

Anyone shot images with ND filters on a Z6?

Thanks.

A couple of links that should help clear up your (and others) questions about the Z6, the FTZ adapter and autofocus performance (after firmware updates) .......

http://www.sansmirror.com/lenses/lens-database/lenses-from-camera-makers/nikon-z-mount-lenses/ftz-adapter-compatibility.html

https://www.zsystemuser.com/z-mount-cameras/nikon-z-camera-reviews/nikon-z6-camera-review.html

Thom gives a considerable amount of time and space to the autofocus system in his review - and I agree with "aflundi" who mentions one contributor's continuing negative comments about autofocus performance. Comments which have remained unchanged since he first rented it in December 2018, and now appears unsure (see post to BebuLamar Dec 6 2018) whether he rented it for one week or two ! I would add, in defence of said contributor, that, aside from early af performance, overall he seemed pretty happy with what was a 4-5 month old "mirrorless newcomer" from the manufacturer he knows and uses. All the more strange, in my opinion, that he still seems unwilling to have followed the development of the Z series' af performance (now in firmware 3) over the almost two years since. Again - look closely at what Thom Hogan now says about current af performance of the Z6.

As you Americans love to express it ........ "just sayin'" .........

Hello all,
I've lurked on this site for awhile now, but this is my first post.
I'm in the market for a new tripod set-up. I have a Nikon D800E and Nikon 200-500mm, f5.6e (weighing in at nearly 8lbs). I am 6' 1" and interested in doing some bird photos as well as other wildlife. I think I've zeroed in on Gitzo systematic tripods but have some questions for actual users.
For BIF photos: do you use a tripod at/near eye height? (for me that would be 67-68")
Any suggestions on a ball head that birders have found useful. Do any of you use a Wimberely "sidekick" for BIF pics?
I don't intend any back country trips with this tripod. It's mainly for stability (for big lenses) that I will set-up in a hunting blind (where I can stand or sit). Let's shoot for $2000 (+ or - $300).
It's great to see how helpful and encouraging everyone is on this forum. I thank you all for the great discussions and advice so freely shared.

Hi John - good to see you've stopped "lurking" and chosen to join the ranks of "Happy Hogger Contributors".

Two early contributors to your post are both long-term and well-respected and their comments/advice are well-worth considering. Indeed I personally have to thank Gene51 for this highly informative piece about tripod stability, its importance, and the manufacturers that "measure up". Well worth your attention before you start spending !

You'll also see from the piece that there are more on the "highly capable" list than some UHH's "old and trusty favourites", Gitzo and RRS. Gene himself often sings the praises of Feisol.

I'm gonna send you a few items for your consideration that come from "east" of you. No doubt there'll be the usual "cheap Chinese junk" naysayers, but I'll leave you to work that out for yourself.

I have seen posts in other discussion forums where people have changed from the Nikon Z system to Fuji X-T system. Has anyone in the group switched from the Fuji X-T system to the Nikon Z system? Why and what is your satisfaction with the change?

Late night greetings from an ex-Nikon DX and FX but now long-term Fuji X user.

Gotta say that your question has me flummoxed ! Why, I am asking myself, does someone who watches forums where "people change from Nikon Z to Fuji-X" want to know about "people who have switched the other way"?

Not until I start reading your previous posts do I begin to find a possible answer.

You've been a happy Nikon DX (D90 / D300) user who took on a Fuji X-T1 + 3 lenses (a second system) sometime in 2016.

In May last year you questioned (quite rightly) certain aspects of the T1 and wondered "T3 (much better camera) or Z6 (FF ... and different)"

In Jan of this year you were still "in a tiz" (FF or crop).

Seems to me like you've still not decided ...... FF or Crop.

I was the same back in 2015 - asked the simple question of myself (not 80K others who couldn't really care less) "what's good enough for ME?" - and decided to go with one system only.

Now I operate with one Fuji X-series camera (good enough for me) and 3 prime Fuji XF lenses. I get quite satisfactory images from this set-up and have no need for FF. NB - the T1 was "first generation" - latest T's have improved in leaps and bounds - do your homework.

From your posts you're an interesting "mature" guy who still has his marbles - believe me, it's more fun, and you'll feel better about it, if you make your decisions yourself !

Midnight approaches ...... so g'nite to you !!

And it does it every time. No it does not have mega megapixels, and I usually use the kit lens (this was the kit lens for this photo), but it delivers the exposure, the sharpness, the color every time. Hi Cat - thought I'd join in for the fun ..... I'm with you ..... was Nikon (DX and FX) but found Fuji in 2013 whilst using D700 and some nice primes. Started with an X-E1 and the "famous" kit lens. Quickly discovered that, in conjunction with my levels of LR knowledge / use, the Fuji results were "good enough" for me. I think, although many wouldn't admit it, there's a huge proportion of UHH-ers who are enthusiasts, liking reasonably good quality, but not in need of "the best" 'cos we're not in it for a living, but for fun. After the first Fuji I've had an X-T1 (slow autofocus in low light and fast action), an X-100T (thought if I wanted the 23mm focal length I might as well get a second camera as well for same money), an X-Pro2 (dunno why, 'cos it's rangefinder style and doesn't suit me - mistake !), and an X-T2, which I love - don't really care what anyone else thinks, I'm settled with what works for me.

I'm what you all might simply call a "general shooter" - (lots of us here methinks) - like to take pics of whatever takes my fancy at the time ! Priorities are IQ (enthusiast remember, but not pro !), and low light focus capability with my lenses (2 x F1.4 and 1 x f1.2 - on APS-C sensor). I've "by-passed" the X-T3 (it appeared too soon after I'd bought the T2) and, with a fair wind and a little financial good fortune, will probably end up with the T4 within the next few months.

Everyone's different - no probs for me - no need for "some" to castigate others 'cos of their personal choices - just enjoy what you have - after all YOU chose it !

Leave you with a couple of pics - don't get mad you non-Fuji folks, you're not me - and one of my latest efforts edited with the (free !) Capture 1 Express for Fuji ...... which is "good enough" for me and my circle,

Bon week-end mes amis !
