You have just bought a new Merc, or a BMW.

It’s state of the art, with every safety and driver oriented feature fitted to enhance the driving experience. You drive it around the block then you decide to heed the advice that you overheard from a couple of old timers.

These guys were seasoned drivers but they never saw much point in these newfangled auto transmissions and other useless stuff.

So you decide to take control because you can do better than the engineers. You begin by ripping out the fuel injection system, all it really does is to provide great reliability, instant starting under all conditions and vastly superior fuel economy. The twin OHC motor isn’t needed so it goes as well then for good measure you chuck out the ABS, anti-skid protection and airbags, the power steering and the power brakes. Out goes the roll over protection, all the sound proofing material, the CD player, the electric windows, the heating and air conditioning and the luxury interior. On go the cross-ply tires and you swap those beautiful big disc brakes for wobbly old drums.

So now you are happy with your new flat headed V8, downdraught Stromberg carburetted, three speed, gas guzzling, noisy, hot in summer, cold in winter unreliable, uncomfortable lump which is all you need to get around, right?

I don’t think so……

So why, when there is all this massive technology available to enable them to make excellent images, do people keep wanting to make such a hash of things by insisting on shooting in manual?

I believe it’s smart to use all the tools in my tool box, and if my camera has certain capabilities, that is the very reason I chose to spend so much to buy the thing in the first place.

But then to choose not use those capabilities to their fullest?

I don’t get it.

If it’s just an ego thing it’s rather self-destructive.

What do you think?

We have a new dog, and he likes to chew. I just looked down and saw that he was chewing on the power cord for my scanner. He had chewed through the insulation on one of the two wires. With AC current, what difference does it make contacting one live wire of a pair?

You still have a ground and a live wire the latest code is that the white has to be ground and the black live

I use a Canon 7D with the EF 24-105 f4 L is & EF 70-200 f4 L is lenses.
I almost invariably shoot without a tripod - mostly kids and dogs.
In a few weeks I will be going to a target rich landscape and architectural environment on vacation.
What do the hoggers think about leaving the is on or turning it off when using this gear on a tripod?
Your .02 will be much appreciated.

Canon says it does not go hunting for movement so it does not matter, however IS does use battery power and for that reason alone you want to turn it off when on a tripod

So I keep reading that this is a great lens....so I rented one to try it out. I really was not impressed, but I don't know if I had an 'early' version. Can someone tell me how to find the date of manufacture on a Sigma lens? Thanks in advance

Go to this sigma website it has all the information on the lenses. However I can not find a date code, but it has a contact tab and you should be able to send them the serial number and ask what year it was build

I would go for the Canon 24-105 f/4L lens. It would make a nice walk around lens and has received some very good reviews. Best Buy has it on sale right now for $1,039.99 which is a fairly good price. I would get rid of the Quantray 75 - 200mm – Old lens w/Macro. I would also get rid of the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 - Di II w/VC unless you really need the f2.8. Only you know if you use this lens often enough to justify keeping it.

I would also consider upgrading the Canon XT to the 60D or at least the T4i. Both are steps up from the XT. I am not sure which is better sense I shoot a 7D, see what others here have to say.

Remember, it is normally better to upgrade your glass before your camera body.

Which book(s) have you found to be most helpful for getting the most out of your D800? I'm not a beginner, but I'd like to take advantage of more of it's features such as bracketing, HDR and liveview.

Thanks,
Greg

Well, let's see. It took about 10 minutes to locate the D60 manual online, download it, search for "date" and find what appears to be the relevant information on page 115. Since I don't have a D60, I can't verify the information in the manual. If someone has been on UHH for any length of time, they should know it's helpful to post a descriptive title, and it's not unreasonable to use the available resources before asking for help.

The poster stated that he has the manual and tried setting what he wants for 2 hours but it wont work for him
I can understand his frustration , when I look at this page it tells me what the camera does at what settings but it does not tell you how to change the settings
and maybee some of you can tell me that I am just as stupid as the poster that asked the question in the first place

I realize we all have login ID's, but would it trouble many people to put a name in their profile? I'm okay with fictitious names like Biff, Buckwheat or PhotoGuy, but why are so many worried about adding a name and location to their profile? I know this post wont change things, but I was just curious?

It is because of scammers and identity thiefs that created this

It also depends on what a person deems "significant improvements"

In my mind, the AF system on the 5DIII is SIGNIFICANTLY better than on the 5DII and I'm willing to upgrade for that reason alone.

Others may not see it that way...it's ok...

Hi. I am thinking of purchasing a ‘Canon EF 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6 ‘L’ IS USM lens’ but am concerned where they are made. Most forums I have looked at everyone seems to think L class Canon lenses are made in Japan. However, just got a reply back from ProCameraShop telling me the lens they are selling is made in Taiwan. Am waiting for replies from other vendors including Amazon on where theirs are made, have also asked Canon but still waiting for reply. Does anyone know if L class lenses are the same quality regardless if made in Japan of Taiwan?

12mp's is plenty at this stage of the DSLR game. Go for the glass and you will never be sorry. 'L' glass will be EF glass (not EF-S) therefore will fit any Canon camera body you choose later, Crop sensor or FF. Personally, I doubt that I will ever go to FF so I have also added a non-L EF-S 17-55 f2.8 lens, strictly because it is great glass. Considering the crop factor, it shoots like a 24-70 L but also has IS and at half the bucks. Bottom line....Go for the Glass.

According to Mr. Ben Long the EF-S lenses are of the same quality as the L lenses from Canon

OK, I'll bite..... Who is Mr Ben Long, and what makes him think that? I have both 'L' and 'non-L' and think that the 'non-L' is good (much better than my 35mm film days) but my 100 mm f/2.8 IS USM is FANTASTIC. My EF-S 18-135mm kit lens is good, but my EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM is as good as 'L' glass and much improved over the quality of the 18-135mm lens. That's my opinion, but then, I'm not Mr Ben Long.

As for the glass itself (not the complete lens), all of Canon's glass is excellent. It is what the engineers do with the glass that makes for a great lens.
