We have a new dog, and he likes to chew. I just looked down and saw that he was chewing on the power cord for my scanner. He had chewed through the insulation on one of the two wires. With AC current, what difference does it make contacting one live wire of a pair?

You still have a ground and a live wire the latest code is that the white has to be ground and the black live
If you (or your dog) isn't grounded when only one wire is bitten through, then no current will flow, meaning no shock. If the insulation is bitten through on both wires, doggie will learn a valuable lesson, if he lives.

We had a dog that loved to chew on power cords. We did several things besides hiding them as much as possible. We got some of the coiled cable covers. She could chew through them but it would take quite awhile and at least it gave us sme time to catch her. We put hot sauce juiced with extra cayenne pepper on them (thin coating) and that slowed it way down. What cured her completely was she when she eventually got through to both wires and she was getting electrocuted but my wife was close by and smacked her free. Lucky for both of them. She never touched another power cord, the dog, not my wife! :-D We have 4 dogs of the same breed now and none of them are chewers on anything but their own toys.

Not sure about the current but suggest painting the wires with hot sauce, like is recommended for rabbits, most animals do not like the taste of hot sauce, Bob.

I would, but I have too many wires and not enough hot sauce. On the other hand, I have three dogs. Do I really need that many? :D

I have another suggestion....It worked for me to get a rabbit to stop chewing on the garage door trim. I went by the drug store and picked up a bottle of the stuff (I forget its name) parents used to put on a childs thumb to get them to stop sucking it. It has a very bitter taste and is no pleasant to the animal, without doing any harm to it.

The problem is that there are too many wires - TV's, lamps, radios. You know what it's like. This guy is a mini dachshund, so he can get into small spaces. I'll just have to keep an eye on him. It's the first time he's chewed on wires. It's not like he doesn't have enough toys. They're all over the house. And of course, anything made of paper is fair game. I hope he grows out of this soon.
