For us old gezzers or handicaped you can get a Golden Age Pass, not sure what it's called now, for about $20.00. I believe starts at age 60. You can get into all Nat'l Parks free. Camping at Corp areas and blm land is 1/2 off. Been to Yosemite (2), Grand Canyon (4), Painted Desert, Arches, Yellowstone, Harpers Ferry, Shiloh, and several others and everyone in the car got in free. Here's one more from there. Leroy

Loves Arches. After Yosemite it is my second favorite park. Like others walking up to Delicate is a real killer. I'm getting too old for a long hike up hill. So glad I made it a few years age. Went up for sunset and it sure got dark coming down.
Good shots.

I'm saving my pennies so I can hopefully go to Yosemite next year. Never been, dying to go!!!

I drove up to the mountains of Eastern Oklahoma on to Talimena Scenic Drive into the CLOUDS!! Leroy

   Oh my gosh! I lived in Broken Bow, OK years ago. The ex loved making the Talimena drive. You are so right about driving in the clouds. When I first experienced it I was awe struck and can still feel those goose bumps of excitement when I think of that first experience standing on the ground, in the clouds.

JimH doesn't think there are hills in OK let alone mtns so here are several more photos taken from Talimena Dr.

We were there in 07 but this is as close to Delicate Arch I got. Glad we didn't go up and personal (3 mile hike) half hr later a t-storm rolled in and water was pouring off the rocks.

Thanks...unfortunately we didn't get to Delicate.....weather turned bad, but plan to go back some day!

I found a different program to resize my photos. It looks a little better. Leroy

Yeah...that's all the closer we got, too.

Nice shots, Tirehouse!

Sorry about the color, it changed when I resized the picture in PSE. It still was a half mile away.

Interesting shot. You might see what it does if you crop out the branches to the left - it may make the center tree and the picnic benches more powerful.

Didn't know OK had hills - last time I drove across it (1985, I-80) it seemed flat as a two dollar pizza.

Where I live, it climbs over 1,000 feet one mile north of me.

I got up early last fall to get my self a good sunrise. It had rained the day before, but the clouds were moving out. I drove up to the mountains of Eastern Oklahoma on to Talimena Scenic Drive into the CLOUDS!! I didn't come away empty thou. I got this photo.

Really thanks ngc1514. I'm not into astrophotography that much but I thought this was a good subject to shoot. Thanks Leroy

Nice shot and the trailing isn't really objectionable.

You can easily calculate an approximation of the length of a star trail by:

Trail Length = focal length in mm * Exposure in seconds * .0007

So the trail for your 6 second shot at 154mm is .065mm or 65 microns.

You can then calculate how many pixels that represents based on your pixel pitch. It looks like the T2i has a pixel size of 4.5 microns per pixel, so the star image should cover (ideally) about 14 pixels. This isn't including diffraction or atmospheric tremors.

Finally, this is for a star trail on the celestial equator where the apparent motion of the stars is greatest. You could include the cosine of the declination (of memory serves... which it probably doesn't!) in your calculation. But the equator is the worst case. Shooting north or south of the celestial equator results in even shorter trails.

Probably more than you ever wanted to know about photographing star trails!

next time take a big search light type light and do a little light painting on your trees at the base there, it will give added dimension to your shots and is fun trying lighting from different directions to enhance your lovely star shots.

It was pretty light out there with the moon. I'll try the light idea next time, although it'll be rough with no power. I live on battery power.. Nearest power line is 2 miles away.

Few people know that there is a second crack in the bell. It runs from the top of the first crack along under the "Pass and Stow" to the top ring under the pivot log. It showed up after it was last rang around 1838. That crack was filled. Leroy
