<snip>As an athletics coach myself I understand that if you take 1000 photos of X-C runners 900 will have there eyes down looking at the mud picking their course so doesn't favour close up shots unless you lay your camera in the mud to get a good "face on" shot. although there are exceptions

The other picture problem with runners, esp. full and half marathoners, is the watch. If a runner ownes a watch, 90% of the time the finish line photo has them looking down at the watch.

I work with a team here in Philadelphia. Before a race, I tell them, if they absolutely must get the time one their watches, to wait 10 seconds after they cross the starting line to punch their watches and then count to ten after they cross the finish line to stop it.

I would use the 18-55 and the 70-300. Sometimes you may want only a head shot with an expression or shoot from the back of the room and want it focused on the stage but with some of the attendees in the foreground.
A lot depends on the lighting on how fast a lens you need and if you can use a flash.

If you use flash you can use a slower lens, but then you have to know what the room is like. Are there surfaces to bounce light from? A low dark ceiling or a high bright ceiling can eat the light from a flash and you might need to go off camera or a good diffusser. If there is a lot of ambient light, you can use a flash on camera and just pull it down a bit for fill only.

Do you know much about the room?

Art Morris has been using the 7D II and has written extensively about it on his blog. Art is renowned for his bird photography so his comments would probably answer you questions about wildlife, etc. I would definitely recommend you check his blog.

Why don't we have a Hedgehog meetup and we could hold arm wrestling tournaments and perhaps duels with various weaponry. Y'all just have to bring along your respective Nikon or Canon T-Shirts and form teems. The Sony and Fugi people can duke it out in the boxing ring or take to mud wrestling. Bring along you cameras and be sure to capture all the action. Be funny if everyone showed up with Hasselblads Licas- now there's some cameras fer ya!

Now of course this is silly- or is it? Ed

How about flinging old sensors at 10 paces?

Of course the advantage would probably go to the Full Frame folk (unless a medium format type shows up)

In my earlier suggestions, I was focused on the shorter lengths for close quarters portraits. Your friend might want to try a longer zoom and do some experimenting to find a focal length that works for the kind of portraits they want to shoot.

I was shooting a run in support of the Boston Marathon victims back in April of 2013. The lighting was coming and going. I saw one of our local running coaches cheering people on and decided to try a slow shutter speed to see if I could get something fun.

This one got into an article about Ross Martinson.

As soon as you post a couple of photos that you had taken, you will be given my answer to the OP's lens question :)

No drum roll.....

No waiting.....

????????

Come on, you can do it ! Let us see a few of your photos.

OK. You have no useful addition to the thread. I understand. All I asked was for you to contribute to the actual topic. I will stop replying to your comments so that those who do have something to add are free to do so.

Obviously pictures would not add anything to the topic of this thread, so I will not add any. It would amount to a non sequitur.

As I mentioned before, on a cropped sensor a 35mm or even 30mm at the low end, but a 50mm like the awesome Sigma 50mm 1.4 Art lens would be good if you want a prime lens.

There are also a lot of zooms in the 17-55 and 17-70 ranges that would do well on a cropped sensor. Some of these are very affordable.

1) Stop with the "sweet pot" you do not live in Colorado.

2) the 50 1.4 is probably worth a shot.

3) if you can afford it, the Sigma 18-35 1.8 is pretty awsome.

IS NO ONE LISTING TO THE ORIGINAL POST!~!
What camera would you recommend that has a SLR type body and the longest zoom for $300 to $400? It's for someone that needs a camera for taking all types of pictures without changing lenses
He's in the range of a Nikon D3100 or a Canon T2i with a long DX Telephoto Lens.

Without changing lenses = SX50.

Please read the OP's original post.

Thanks everyone for all your comments. I knew I could depend on great answers and will pass them on to her. I had hoped that she would join UHH to see for herself. I have been having some medical issues so did not see all the posts until recently to comment back.

Sorry to hear you are not feeling well. Get well soon.

Ok, let's start from scratch (the beginning):

#1. Early this morning after turning on my PC, in my email file, I could see that someone upon the UHH website had posted a message..

#2. When reading the OP's posted message, it could be seen that it was a valid question whereas the OP was asking for information about a good portrait lens for the OP's friend to use on the friend's camera.

#3. After reading the OP's question, I responded by sending a reply which I thought would be of help whereby the info I had provided could be passed on by the OP to the OP's friend ~ yet, I had neglected to notice that the OP's question had provided info stating that the OP's friend did not have a camera with a full size sensor which, then, made my info not so good because my response was of such whereby I had responded in such a way whereas I was thinking the OP's friend had a camera with a full size sensor.

#4. Then, you had jumped in and found it necessary to correct me for my failing to notice that the OP's post was asking for a lens for taking portraits with a camera not having a full size sensor.

#5. After just having gotten out of bed and not sleeping well last night, my response to the OP was faulty due to my not being quite awake, but I had taken an exception for your expending your time to find it necessary to send a message to me correcting me for my oversight.

#6. I feel that had you just let it go, all would had ended well, but when you go out of your way to go off subject to correct a post that wasn't sent to you in the first place, you were out of line and you must also know that few if any really care about that which you had written trying to make me ~ as you put it, "appear to be a fool" for not having read your post that you had sent to the OP earlier..

#7. Next, I have followed up by checking when you had first signed onto the UHH website or when you had first become a member of UHH which was over two years ago and have found that you have initiated only 9 posts of your own, but it is of my opinion, after seeing that you have posted hundreds of messages responding to others, many of which are doing that which you do best ~ which is challenging others on their posts or you are at your very best when debating issues of which others have posted. Then, it was comical to had seen that you had even delved into the subject of watermarks, etc, of which was another one of your complaints.

#8. Perhaps, there are some of us upon this site that would like to see you post a photograph that you had taken because, as of now, your are best known for casting judgments, but you seem to never post a photo so that we can justify our thinking which may tell us that you actually do have some photography expertise ? AND, I am certain that you don't want to be compared to a baby robin which is best known for squawking; yet, having scrawny little bird legs and nothing to back up anything that is said ~ as with the baby robin who had (squawked) way too much ! 8-)

#9. Now, with all of the aforementioned said, Please, I ask that you use caution in the future to not respond or post to my posts that were intended for someone other than you !

#10. May peace be with thee and may thou now go forth and thee not post a response to me ~ ever ~ that is, whenever I have posted a response to others....

Try to have a great day and I send you my best regards.
~Doug~
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ br Ok, let's... (show quote)

So your recommended lenses based on your now corrected understanding of the OP's issue would be.......

Drum roll....

Waiting....
