I'm on the fence here,so any input would be greatful. I have a 7D now. But I'm thinking of up grading to a 7DMKII OR 6D . I shoot everything wildlife , wildflowers, and grandkids. I would like to do some night time shots also, really like what I see on the milky way shots. If it moves or has color I will try to shoot it.I keep thinking Canon will come out with some new stuff in the FF. So if you are lucky enough to have both what do you think. Which way would you go.
Thanks for y'all input.
Ron

How badly do you need the higher frame rate, the "reach" advantage at longer focal lengths and AF @ f8 of the 7D II ??

Ron, that should be easy. Should you get a race car or a commuter!
Well, do you ever race?!
Seriously, the 6d is a commuter. It is NOT an action camera, but it could limp along is pressed into service.
I do a lot of sports. If I could only have one camera it would be the 7ll. But you currently own the 7l. How much nature do you do? Remember that you will instantly loose that 1.6x reach. Your 400mm suddenly becomes a 400mm, when you are used to a 640mm!
I have both a 7ll and a 5ll. The 7 will do anything my 5 will do, but the 5 can not even come close to doing what the 7 can do.
Yes, both are best, but after years of having only FF, if I could have only one, it would be the 7ll. Good luck. ;-)

Remember, unless you have EF mount lenses, a move to a 6D will require more than a camera body.

Hi Ronsh, I do have both (almost). The sensor in the 6D is very similar to the one in the 5DIII, which I have. I've even heard someone say the sensor in the 6D had been improved upon in some way (don't remember the details) over the 5DIII.

In my opinion these cameras are really 2 different setups. One is for sports and motion shots, the other is for landscape, portraits and stills. For the most part that is how I use each of mine 90% of the time.

I do use my 5DIII however, way more than the 7D / 7DII that I just upgraded to. I really like the low light ability of the full frame and would probably lean that way given my shooting style. Also, you could still shoot motion in the 6D, just not as many frames per second. Hope this helps somewhat. Good luck.

The 7D II supposedly will AF on lenses with F8 maximum aperture - like the 400mm f5.6 prime with a 1.4X TC ... - I do not think the 6D will do that .....

Chris,
Does the 7DII have the low light/ noise of the 6D. How about the color, are they close to the same? I want to shoot pictures off wildlife in low light, and also shoot pictures of Texas wildflowers ( lots of blues and reds )
Thanks
Ron

How is the 7D II on low light. I want to shoot wildlife in low light and shot Texas wildflowers,so willthe 7dii give me the lw light shots without the noise and vivid colors of a FF.

Have you experienced this?

Ron, a few things. Only 3 Canons will focus an f8 lens, the 1Dx, 5lll and the 7ll(7).
As far as low light focus, the 7ll will focus in as low a light at 3-Ev. The ONLY other camera on the planet that will do that is the 6D(6). the 1dx and 5lll will NOT. Canon says 3-Ev is the light of 1 candle in a room.
As far as noise goes, the 6d being FF will always outperform a Crop sensor.
The 6D only will shoot to 1/4000 ss. the 7 to 1/8000.
The 6 has one cross type focus point, the 7 has 65, plus one dual cross.
The 7 is fully weather sealed to shoot in the rain, the 6 might not have any sealing.
The 6 is a stripped down 5ll.

Personally, if I were to think I wanted as 6D, I would buy a
used 5ll first, it's a far better camera. Just what I would do.
By the way, again just my view, but NO shot of wildlife comes out very good in low light with ANY camera. My rule of thumb? If I have NO catch-light, I have NO shot! Again, just me! ;-)
