Adobe does have a subscription program.

Wow... cool. Adobe acted pretty fast on my recommendation. :-) However, based on the pricing, I think there are going to be a lot more students and teachers. :-) Yet, I think some could really benefit from this program. Thanks for sharing that!

Since the annual subscription price is $420 it would be much cheaper to just update when a new version comes out. The update is usually $199 and can be found lower than that on some sites.

Those wishing to upgrade to CS6 need to understand Adobe's new policy. This is from their site:

First off, for anybody currently running the latest major release, Creative Suite 5 (either 5.0, 5.1, or 5.5), you’re fine. You will not be affected by this revision, and will be eligible for the discounted pricing on upgrades when CS6 comes out.

For everyone else, if you’re still running older versions – like CS2, CS3, or CS4 – when CS6 releases, you wouldn’t qualify for that upgrade price break. And customer reaction on this point has been understandibly unfavorable.

This is the kind of stuff that pisses me off... Thankfully, I don't rely on my old copy of CS3 for anything but stitching to creating panos. Many are not users of Adobe software, but indentured servants of their updates and pricing structure. Fortunately, there are other good products out there for the home user.

You are right. Adobe's new policy boarders on greed. They will lose many faithful users due to this new policy. I always upgraded on every other version but now I do not have that convenience. I have CS5 and will be forced to upgrade to CS6 if I want the upgrade price.

My homeowner's policy does cover my photo equipment. My son rents an apartment and has renter's insurance on the contents which also covers his photographic equipment. Just make sure that your policy is enough to cover the total replacement cost of all contents......and document, document, document! Take photos and write out your list and put it in a safe place like your bank box.

But most importantly talk to your agent to make certain you are covered.

They are about to release CS6 (I think in April). If you are still in the class that long, you might want to consider waiting until it comes out. Or they might offer CS5 at a discounted rate when the new version comes out.

To upgrade or not to upgrade - always the question. I'll have to see what it has to offer.

You can get a good price on Photoshop, but it requires some patience.

Start out with Elements. Often, you can get it for free, bundled with products like Wacom tablets or digital cameras. Or you can buy it on sale. (Adobe usually offers 50% off Elements around Christmas time.)

Once you have Elements, wait for an upgrade offer. It might take awhile, but if you're patient, you'll get a chance to upgrade to CS5 for about $150.

But you might find Elements does everything you need, and not need an upgrade.

You can only upgrade to CS5 if you have CS2, 3, or 4. You cannot upgrade from Elements. If you really want CS5 taking the student discount will be the best bet.

I never liked those silly faux "frames" added with PS.

I also hate poorly framed pictures, but that is for another thread.

Robert, would you post one of your photos here? Your process sounds really interesting.

Subtle frames can help on projected images. I'd like to put them on the photos I show at our camera club.

Photoshop Elements 10 (PSE) has a bunch of frames you can use. I think you can modify them as well. I'd like to use them more but have a problem.

The problem is with putting them around pics. They tend to be square or portrait and the set-up is such that you insert the pic into the frame. You can adjust the pic size but I haven't found out how to adjust the frame to go around the pic instead.

Does anyone know how to do that in PSE?

I don't use PSE but you can purchase onOne Software's PhotoFrame 4.1 Pro and it is compatible with PSE 10. I presently use version 3.1 with Photoshop CS5. You access it from the filters menu in Photoshop. The program allows you to rotate and/or stretch frames as well as to add additional elements to the frame. You can download a free 30 day trail at:

http://www.ononesoftware.com/products/suite/photoframe/?ind

As aside anyone running PS CS5 that has PhotoFrame 3.1 Pro you were probably told that 3.1 is not compatible with CS5 however it will run just fine with CS5 in Windows XP or in Windows 7 running in 32 bit mode.

Emmett, nice shot. I do this with some shots using the stroke in layers. Is that what you did? Below is one I just did after being inspired by your shot.

Tom, I really like the last one. It really popped out at me. Very interesting the way that you angled the frame. Just beautiful! I do a lot of butterflies and I am going to experiment with that frame concept.

Sorry to tell you but you can't use a Canon 1.4 or a 2X converter on the 70-200mm f/2.8 or f/4 lens. It won't fit. If you use a Sigma SP converter, it will fit but you won't be happy with the results.

The Canon 100-400mm lens or the Sigma 150-500mm lens or the Sigma 50-500 lens is the way to go inexpensively in my opinion. As to the fact that they are not fast, you are correct. After all, camera equipment is a compromise. You don't get fast and cheap and sharp in one lens. Pick any two you want. let me say that they are fast enough to allow the camera the ability to focus and you rarely expose wide open anyway.

My best, J. Goffe

Actually the Canon extenders will fit on all EOS cameras. The issue is that you lose some functionality with some lenses. They work very well with with Canon's 2.8 lenses but you may only get autofocus only from the center point. You may lose autofocus on the slower lenses. Here is an excellent compatibilty chart for reference:

I am interested in seeing if any of you apply frames to your images and how or which software is used. I know that many photos do not lend themselves to applying creative frames but many do. The frame on this photo was added in onOne PhotoFrame Pro. I would love to see some of yours and learn how they are created.

Winter in Chicago

Great shot of a great city. I travelled to Chicago quite a bit in my working days. Here is a shot taken from an airplane as we approached Ohare on November 25, 2004.

PS -- Many of my trips there in the winter were greeted by snow!

I didn't see any invitation from Jaming64 for others to post any pictures on his topic. Forum rules are on the main UHH page under HELP. Suggest you read them and show courtesy and respect after reading them.

Thanks Robin. I am pretty thick skinned most of the time. I think that I was more frustrated with myself for the error than anything else. It's time to let it go and move forward. You see, I learned a new rule today. :-D
