Did a similar trip last year (Bucharest to Budapest) and rarely used telephoto; don't over-pack that equipment. Another tip, tip the bartender at the beginning of the voyage not at the end.
Covent Garden is worth a look as is the near-by London Transportation Museum.
Having gone to school in London many of us learned where starving students could survive and enjoy the sights on the cheap. Charring Cross Road was always my favorite as old London, You can see actual trials at the Old Bailey Court House for free, The Imperial War Museum told the story of WWII, and cheap but good Indian food can be found on the "Brick". Most museums are free including the Tate Modern (at least parts of it are free). Greenwich is historic but becoming commercialized and the Cutty Sark has a senior discount. But my favorite place is ST. Pauls Cathedral. They charge a lot to get in now but some times you can slip in with a group for free. I love going down to the catacombs and seeing all the great men who build the country.

Climb the hill to Dover Castle. Not only is it an outstanding relic of yesteryear, it has great views of the cliffs to the north. And, you can see France from there so a ferry is unnecessary. Plan several hours there.
When in Budapest visit the Museum of Terror. For those of us who grew up in the cold war, this display is the single largest indictment of the communist system we witnessed in our youth
. It's right downtown and is the old KGB HQ. Also, the Moscow Hotel is a wonderful place to sit outside and have a beer. People-watching is phenomenal and you can get good cigars there.
