I wonder if I am the only one who makes camera and lens purchases based, at least partly, on impressing others.
I live in the woods, on a lake, and when no one can see what I am using, which is most of the time, I could very well get superb pictures with my old Minolta X570 with my 45mm f 2 lens. But, when I am in public, or with my photo friends I sort of want to impress them, and feed my ego, by carrying my high end digital Nikon with super lenses. Again, am I the only Hog with this kind of ego?

Well I carry my high end digital Nikons with super lenses whether or not anyone can see me.
But if I had a better camera I would carry that.

I think that's called an Image Enthusiast.
I prefer to beincognito, but....I do like the looks of the Fuji X-Pro2.
I have the baby brother, the X-E2.

I could cover the Nikon name with black tape and be just as happy. Happier, 'cause thieves would less likely grab it with my back turned. You don't imprint pictures with the camera make and model, so why care about the pedigree?

I usually put black electrician's tape over the camera name to discourage thieves.

Any would-be camera thief worth their salt should know what camera you have by the shape of the prism housing. If they can't do that, they have no business stealing my camera.

Before I retired I was in a nature photography club. Pretty much everybody had the same level of gear, be it Canon or Nikon. We loaned stuff around pretty freely. Nobody was impressed by who had what.

One woman used to come along to hang out with her husband and just watch. She carried a little point and shoot.

Every month we had a photo contest that was anonymous. After she won 2 in a row everyone was impressed with her point and shoot. Her husband was jealous.

Since I moved to Delaware I shoot a lot at Bombay Hook NWR, and a couple of times a year at Conowingo. I don't have a clue as to what you could bring to these places that would be impressive.

IMHO those who buy something to impress, only impress themselves.

There are guys who post about beating such and such a car when the light changes green. I always ask the same question, "Did the other guy know he was racing?".

And the black tape will flag it as a valuable item.

It may be a very small part of what you say , but human nature being what it is, the thing your doing is more to do with showing your friends
That you can afford just as good of gear as they can , that you don't have to use out dated stuff out of nasessatie , that your one of the good guy's , and if they all had camera's costing twice as much as yours , you would be saving for one also , it's in the nature of things ,

Exactly.
My Df looks like an old 35mm, so people either don't notice it or ask what film I'm shooting.

I've always done that, and for traveling in Europe, it is one way to keep your camera from being stolen.

If I want to slow down...I shoot the M645, most people look at you funny when you're carrying that around...otherwise I really could care less what people think of my gear...I know what it is capable of, and it's all in the results.

Honestly, I'm not concerned how impressed/unimpressed strangers in public are about my camera or lens. Sometimes people take notice when I'm out with my TLR, but I use it for my enjoyment, not theirs. If someone comes up to me to talk about my camera, that's fine, but I don't specifically seek out conversation with strangers about my gear. They're just tools. I'd much rather talk about photography techniques, not camera and lens specs.

You are up against people who equate 'best' with 'expensive'.
People who want 'to do everything' yet expect the camera to do it for them.

If asked 'what is best' and told 'I want to shoot everything' 'money no object' what would you sell them?
