HI ,

I am familiar with the cropping tool, but one question I had in mind lately was how to make sure I crop correctly for different printing size. Can you point to a good description page ? My thoughts are that I pretty much never printed a photo I've made and never seen a result on paper from a cropped picture. So lets say i have a picture, which i cropped as i wanted. How do i make sure it's correct for a print size? For the records I am still searching and trying to figure it out, but i feel I missed something important theory regarding this.

edit:
forgot to add that my lates find was this table for cropping sizes. Just not exactly understand how I measure when under cropping:
640*424
960*640
1280*856
1920*1280
2560*1704
3200*2128
3840*2560
4480*2984
5120*3416
5760*3840
6000*4000

Hi ,

cant remember of any inbuilt program to re-size raw picture files.
I also wanted something very simple to just re-size to smaller formats for email etc. I've been using this "Image Resizer for Widnows"
This allows me to mark either one, or several picture files, Right click on them and then chose "Resize Picture"

but not from the raw files.

I also find LR CC very sluggish at times and I have a monster desktop sometimes if I go into preferences and toggle performance graphic card on if it was off and off if it was on performance improves sometimes I have to restart lightroom or even reboot.. An example of sluggish is sliders won't move and then jump if I am setting up a graduated filter and go to adjust the lines nothing happens and then several seconds or more later the entire filter jumps or swirls or something.

For me it sounds like you have other challenges. What you describe, for me sound like too little ram and maybe a hard-drive which need de-fragmentation. You mentioned turning performance on and off. Is this a laptop? My experience with laptops is that unless you invest heavy, they will always perform poorly when dealing with media editing.

My theory is based on the fact you mentioned rebooting and it helps, sluggish, big desktop, etc. Exporting several pictures where some fail , this may indicated a large write que on your hard-drive.
If you have little memory all this = swapping to hard-drive and that means 10 times slower, and reboot often helps. Just for a little while.

If you find hard to fix permission problems , you could get the little app i mentioned in my answer. This can easy help you gain Full Control on your folder. Basically it changes owner to administrator and sets everyone full control.

This has to be your choice. If you feel this stuff is difficult and have general knowledge of windows, then let someone else do it. This way you don't end up in an evil loop of problems. :)

Yes , i was just a little too late with my answer.

Regarding permissions on folders and files, an admin account can get access denied also. NTFS permissions can be a mess when windows fails. I guess you could just have reset folder permission to start with, not add the home group. But you have it working now, so I am not going to advise to correct it. If "it ain't broken , dont fix it"
:)

I have a strange feeling you are suffer from a NTFS permission problems.

I spent a good couple of hours a couple of days back when suddenly my LR complaind about not finding the catalog and/or refering to a corruption on file system. For the record I am using a NAS stoarage.

Started to look at the folders and my fear was a fact. No access to files, and everytime i tried opening a photo i got the message about no access or corrupted. I had access like some hours before, so i could not understand that permission should be the problem. So i thought it was corruption. Just before i was about to restore my library , i wanted to check the NTFS permission. And bam !! Permissions were F****D.

So , since i know all about this , this should be corrected if I reset all folder permission from top level. The only problem was it just hanged big time, every time it arrived to LR catalog folder. So i could never complete the process. I wanted to removed the whole LR folder since i have the backup , but that was not possible. No access. Only solution was to MANUALLY go on each folder (meaning ALL folders under the Library) and set permission on folder. Having in mind there are like almost 3000 folder , there was no way I would continue like this. Dont know why MS cant make this available like many others.

You can not mark several folders and do this process. So since damn MS cant solve this problem (which by the way is not knew or win10 specific) i went and downloaded a little program called "NTFS permission tool x64" .
With this little app I marked all the folders and then changed to everyone full Controll. So all my picture folders were now accessible. Only LR left.

For this folder I tried the same, but here was another problem. I was hanging. So i managed to brake this down and found there were two corrupted folders under "Lightroom 5 Catalog Previews.lrdata" Theese two folders were really corrupted and windows would not let me touch those. Solution for this is to run a checkdisk. This will solve your corrupted files and then able to delete them After this i did not restored my LR catalog. I'm guessing i problably have a folder which lost the history of work and it does not bother me. I could get it back from backupo i just dont know which picture folder is.

So in conclusion :
1. run a checkdisk (Right click on ur harddrive, Properties, and Tools. Check disk) and fix errors if you have. And try again.
2. Check your NTFS permissions on the folder you export to.

In the aftermath, IF i knew from the beginning that there was a corruption on these folders , I would have started just with checkdisk and eventually NTFS permission after.

not sure how long this free upgrade is lasting.i am a little confused myself. I reserved for the upgrade, and ended up doing it from the net before MS sent me confirmation to go.

if you take chose to restore back to your windows 8, it will restore your computer back to as it was. So if your LR was ok then , you should be safe.

BUT , must be honest , i have no more than one week experience with win10 myself, and i have not tried that procedure. :( For me all working well.

Yes , I understand.
Sounds like a lot actually , and probably you would spare time if you just revert to your Windows 8 installation while you can , and consider a new approach on the upgrade.

As for me I must say i keep away from pretty much most of IE , Edge and MS proprietary programs.

a system restore will restore your Windows installation to a point in time. So this is not a fresh windows install.

Anyway, not sure if you have a big issue there. Just cant understand what you define as wrong and other crap :) is your computer laggy, hanging? slow ? I am a tech guy , and problems like this is hard to understand from the little i know. It started with can't open picture. :)

Thanks for all your responses but none seem to apply to my specific problem.

I've decided I'd like to go back to the day Win 10 was installed. I must have done something wrong because nothing is working as well as it did that first day.

Does ANYONE know how to do that? When I go to settings I get options such as returning to Windows 8.1 or resetting to my original factory settings. I don't want to do either of those. I'm going to google an inquiry and see what I get.

Thanks!

Go to Start button , type in Control and you will see Control Panel. Click on it. Then click on Open system Restore.

Se if you have any system restores versions there. But most like you will have one. this one.

But can you say what type of file it is when you save it ?

Hi ,

I find MS picture viewer since Win XP as crap. Therefore never used them. What i love is IrfanViewer.

Regarding your main problem , have you tried to save the picture on ur desktop first or trying to open directly through email?

HI Insman ,

Not exactly sure what your computer's problem is , but my thought on the first question is that you maybe need to run a checkdisk before installing win10. Also , if you have lot's of peripharals, try disconnecting them while installing win 10.
If you have some agressive antivirus and malware protection, you should consider disabling while upgrading.

2. I was one of them who skipped Windows 8 and 8.1 so i can't pin point how to turn off Windows updates. I allways go manually into Services and deactivate windows Update service.
Start - Run - (type in: services.msc and press enter)
This will open a windows and on the right side you will see a list of all the services on your computer. Scroll down until you find Windows Update. Doubleclick on it and choose disable from the drop down.

or you can look into this link which describes deactivating windows update.

http://www.gottabemobile.com/2014/08/16/how-to-stop-updates-on-windows-8-1/

Are you trying to upgrade? You could try this other methos.
Instead of using the windows update to install win 10, download the media tool creator and make an USB stick conataining the windows installasjon and it's also bootable.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/media-creation-tool-install

If upgrading is not important for you , i would suggest to backup ur personal stuff and try a clean install with the usb stick.

Hope it helps on your way
