Sorry to hear of your loss. It is indeed a bummer!

In addition to digital I use "old" Minolta bodies for B & W film. Is that Minolta an SRT-101? Or maybe a SRT 201? I have a small collection of Minolta and Sigma primes, but I might be interested in lenses also. (I have a couple 50mm lenses as well as a 50mm Macro.)

Got it Chris. Thank you -- and all others -- for the time you took to write replies to my query!

Thank you all for all the comments and opinions! They are quite helpful. I will do more research since some of you mentioned models I have not considered.

I have a Rebel XTi and one older Rebel, and I'm ready to move up. (I have some high-quality Canon lenses.) I've always found the transition to newer Rebels easy, but I'm considering the 77D, mainly for one major reason. I have a touch of Parkinson's. Standing fully upright my balance is good, but if I want to get lower I cannot balance well. For those shots I use a tripod, which has a tilting center post, but it is extremely awkward -- and perhaps dangerous -- for me to check my settings. Besides the flip-out articulating screen, the 77D has the LCD on top of the camera. Does anyone have thoughts on the 77D in general and the top LCD screen in particular? Or thoughts on the T7i? Many thanks!

This is a show of great kindness, by you and those who made photographic contributions. Both my parents spent their final years in a nursing home. I know how much oil paintings and photos brightened their days. My hat is off to you.

Produce (if you can) a 24 x 20 print from a 'Top of the range DSLR' and a 24 x 20 from your I phone, of the same subject. Ask your students if they can see any difference in quality. Also ask yourself if you can see any difference. Like to know the results.

I'm with Pablo. I'd love to see a large print from an I phone, so I'd know.

Be patient with yourself. Take photos everyday. (They don't have to be prizewinners -- though you might get one.) That will help make you comfortable with your camera. Learn a little at a time. When you read your manual or watch videos, a little at a time, do it with your camera at hand. When I went from film to digital in 2006 I pretty much learned everything about my new Canon. I didn't need to. Eventually I mastered the critical settings and got comfortable with mainly three modes: manual, aperture priority, and shutter speed priority. Shooting with A or P at first is a good way to start.
