I have a Rebel XTi and one older Rebel, and I'm ready to move up. (I have some high-quality Canon lenses.) I've always found the transition to newer Rebels easy, but I'm considering the 77D, mainly for one major reason. I have a touch of Parkinson's. Standing fully upright my balance is good, but if I want to get lower I cannot balance well. For those shots I use a tripod, which has a tilting center post, but it is extremely awkward -- and perhaps dangerous -- for me to check my settings. Besides the flip-out articulating screen, the 77D has the LCD on top of the camera. Does anyone have thoughts on the 77D in general and the top LCD screen in particular? Or thoughts on the T7i? Many thanks!

Having almost bought a Rebel and getting a 60D instead (only because the Rebel was too small for comfort in my hands), I'm glad I did. Nice having the top LCD display instead of having to look through the viewfinder or bringing up everything on the rear display to view settings.

The top LCD is the only difference between the t7i and the 77D. Both are truly Rebel cameras, they even accept the same battery grip if you still have doubts.

Personal opinion, I would choose the 77D over the T7i. However for similar money you could get a refurbished 80D from Canon, with the same warranty as new. I have a T3i and a refurb 80D. The 80D is another step up from the 77D, and worthy of consideration in your situation.

Good luck with the decision and upgrade.

I swear by the top LCD. I've used them since the film days. I made my choice of the 77D over the T7i and, indeed, the 80D because of the lighter weight of the 77D over the 80D and the top screen and the easier to use (than previous Rebels) rear Control Dial.

With all these cameras, however, the flip out main screen will allow you to check and re-set your camera and in LIVE VIEW even compose and re-compose and focus and re-focus your camera while on your tripod or with the Canon remote app--your smart phone while standing or comfortably and safely sitting near by. Also, with a flip out screen, you can use a lower extension of your tripod, usually making it more stable. This also may allow use sf a smaller, lighter set of lens, too. YMMV.

One drawback is the battery is smaller (weight saving) BUT the life is shorter especially if you're using power hogs like wi-fi, Live View and/or Video. Be sure to get a couple of extra batteries or teh grip, and, perhaps, even a charger that allows you to charge in your car or other USB source. The stock charger doesn't allow it.

Overall, I'm excited about my 77D in my bag for almost 2 years. It gives me the 24MP sensor, Dual Pixel AF, and all those focus points I'll someday learn to use. Combined with a light lens like the 24mm Pancake, 10-18mm, or another small zoom, this package size and weight is competitive with mirror less offerings with no learning curve for me.

PS: Since I'm no longer weather sealed and I haven't shot at 1/8000th of a second, maybe ever even when I had a camera that could, the 77D was an overall good trade off for me. The Top Screen being the main differentiation over the Rebel.

The 77D (update to the T6s from the last generation) with the tilt screen and top screen would be good for you.
If being slightly larger and heavier doesn't bother you than the 80D (a great deal on Canon Store refurb site-I bought one) though a year older is a more advanced camera with more controls, longer lasting battery etc.

If you really want to save size and weight and don't mind simplified (most stuff is in menus) controls than look at the SL2.

Canon's refurbished are a great deal, factory certified and with the same warranty as new.
Here is a page for the refurbished EOS cameras.

The 77D is actually a “T7s”.
The wire that’s necesssary on the battery grip stopped me from buying a T7i or 77D. I bought a refurbished T6s from Canon and it’s one fine instrument. Has all the fire power of the “7’s”.

I bought a T7i early on when they were a lot cheaper than a 77D. As I got more advanced, I wished I bought the 77D so when they went on sale, I did. It is a significantly better camera which not only has the top screen but also a 2nd control wheel. I consider both features essential. I know the 77D has the same internals but IMO it does a better job than the Rebel at getting exposures correct and the contrast seems better so I suspect the processor was updated too. Size and weight are close to identical. Bottom line: for only $50 more, buying the 77D is a no brainer.

Just to add the information that refurbished 80D bundles which include an EF-S 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens and the excellent EF-S 55-250 f/4-5.6 IS STM lens are on the Canon USA site at less than $700.00 ($100.00 less than the price for a refurb 80D body with no lenses). This price may represent the rumored impending launch of a 90D replacement for the 80D, but an 80D will continue to be a very good all-rounder camera.

👍👍👍 Yup! I also recommend the refurb 80D. With the expected 90D on the horizon, I suspect Canon to price the refurb 80D more aggressively. Go for it.

It might be a little hard to read the top screen of the 77D in daylight. Size and weight might also be a factor, have you thought about the Canon SLT, A DSLR in a much smaller package?

I have a 77D and love it. Those who only look at specs will tell you that the only difference in the 77D and the T7i is the top LCD. As an actual user of the 77D, I can attest to the fact that this isn't entirely true. The button locations are quite different on the 77D. The body is similar in size and weight but not identical. The other features are also very similar. For the tiny price difference, the 77D is a no-brainer, in my opinion. The Auto-focus on the 77D is excellent. I prefer the size of the 77D, and the deeper hand grip over the 80D. (The 80D is larger and heavier than the Rebel series cameras.) In my opinion, you might also prefer the lighter weight and smaller body size of the 77D, if weight is an issue for you. The 77D also has better low light performance than the 80D. It is rated for higher ISO performance, which proves true in the real world. I would encourage you to handle all three cameras at a camera store before making your purchase, if possible.

Knox - just a few thoughts on this. Essentially - the two bodies are the same camera, but with some very minor differences. The obvious one is the inclusion of the Top-Deck LCD on the 77D, but, in order to do that, Canon had to make some changes. First off - the screen is much, much smaller, than the ones on the EOS XX series (50D, 60D, 70D, 80D) … and - ever since the 60D, the buttons have lined up corresponding to the display segments (don't think they do on the 77D) and, of course - the switch has been moved over to the left - behind the Program Dial (as on the 60D, et al) instead of being just behind the Program Dial on the right - as it is with all Rebels. Also, you have Stabilized Video - in the 77D - a God's Send - which you don't have in the 80D - a BIG plus. There are also some other minor control changes. There are many, many comparison tests already available on the Net - comparing the two models. Many put the T7i ahead on sharpness, and reproducing fine detail, but the faster processor - may actually obscure some of that. Basically, what it comes down to is this - go with the T7i - and you have a seemingly more capable camera, with the red Rebel legend on the outside of the body, or - forego that luxury in favor of the top LCD screen - which you will have in the T6S or any of the EOS XX series. But do note - the T6S/T6i is a bigger body than the 77D/T7i, and has only 9 Focus Points, whereas all the later models have 19. If money is your main concern, however, the T6i/T6s (refurb.) may suit your needs better. If a well-laid-out top-deck screen is your primary objective - the EOS 60D (sans Touch Screen) or the EOS 70D (with it) may be a more suitable choice. And, with the 90D on the horizon, with a rumored 30-32MP sensor, it might be more advisable to wait (but the price will be up there - around $1200-1300.)

Extended thoughts, relating to the switch movement. I have two Rebels - T3, T4i (first w/ Touch-Screen) and they are both easily maneuverable with the right thumb (I'm sure you've noticed that, too, Knox) but with the switch on the left - switching the camera on and off - becomes a two-handed operation. This does - sometimes - slow down your response time, particularly, if you're in the habit of continually turning the camera OFF, immediately after making your exposure, in order to conserve the battery. I must admit it doesn't much matter with the 60D (lacks Touch-Screen) as the battery lasts approximately 1150 shots! But, all the more recent Canon DSLRs will provide much less, as they ALL have Touch-Screens, now - which significantly reduces your total exposures. Again, this is yet another factor you might wish to consider, Knox. I just took out my 60D yesterday, on my walk, and I am much impressed by it, once again (I usually take out the T4i, or another) AND even used it with a NON-IS AF lens (Tokina 16.5-135) and was bowled over - literally - by the images - so much better than I get with EITHER of my Rebels - both of which - have stabilized lenses. But, doing the on/off on the left - IS - just - a little tricky!!!
