Cat...I have just tried a new software and played around with the out of focus picture I took of my 9 year old grand daughter. I am still in play with it but I must admit it is looking a lot sharper than when I started. The orignal picture of her is in; Have you ever taken a shot by accident?'

As you can see the right side is still a little rough due to my usuing the eraser mode. But like one said there is no need to throw away ANY picture now days.

Buddy36 My intent here is not to rain on your parade. Just saying.

Oops! forgot to mention, I do like your photograph, everything doesn't have to be in perfect focus to be appealing. I would like to see the finish work when you get it done.

Buddy36, Oh!!! I have taken photos that were out of focus, too dark, too light, crooked, and if I think I can save a photo, by all means, I will certainly try. I get kinda proud when I can pull it off and I don't mind telling how I save it, but that's just me and I do these for fun. Personnally, though, if I sold a photo or gave one to a friend and it had been photoshopped I would disclose it, I think it adds to the artistry of the photograph and to the ability of the artist ( just my opinion)

Since you said it was ok I worked on it for a few minutes. I first cropped it....then filled in the portion of the window and left the third horse's face and hoofs...utilized shadow/highlites then added a very little contrast....utilized the brush tool to darken what I filled in....finally put a 2px black border. This was done very quickly and the result may not be better than the original you posted.

I've removed your photos from my PC.

I really like what you did with the photo!!!! Thanks!!

I like this photo, but I really want to do more with it. I thought about trying to keep all three horses and switching to a black background ,but don't know if that would work.. Any suggestions on how to improve. If anyone wants to work on it and upload their version, please feel free to do so

Here are two more that I took at Riverbanks Zoo, Columbia, SC. The first was one of the first I made with a Canon AE1 that was given to me. The second was made with the Canon Rebel

When I worked for a newspaper as a graphic artist it was very clear what we could and could not do with photoshop. Now, I can and do do whatever I want with a photo, but I always indicate that it was 'shopped, if it was. Coming from a photojournalist background I am having a great time with the freedom to manipulate photos to MY liking. When I signed up with deviantart, I did so as a photographer and photomanipulator. I am also in awe of the people who can do fantasy stuff because they have the talent and skills that I don't. (Like being able to draw)

I believe the point made by JimH speaks to the notion of "making" an image -- which is one thing -- while pasting objects in during post-processing is another.

It's a new world. I'm inclined to embrace it all -- when it works effectively it can be great art! But, I believe it's important to fess up to what's 'real' and what isn't.

I totally agree, I don't see anything wrong with adding objects or photoshopping but I do feel very strongly that it should be noted when describing the photo... I appreciate the purest who change "nothing" on their photographs and they are magnificent, but some like me need a little help sometimes.

I used my Canon 30D with the 300 2.8 with the 2X converter on it. I haven't been to the zoo since I got the Canon 5D Mark II. Can't wait to give it a shot. Thanks for your comments.
