Considering the urgency, I think they did a bang up job. How many more would have died had they gone through longer trials?

In many respects, I agree.

Had they been honest, and simply stated the realistic benefits of C***d v******tion (as they generally do with flu shots), rather than over-promising the benefits, under-playing the side-effects, and poo-pooing any immunity gained from actual infection, they would not have lost so much public trust.

And by "they" I mean largely the FDA and CDC, who did not hold P****r, M*****a, et al. to continuing to collect and release data (I suspect they have the data, but won't release it voluntarily) about the v*****es' true efficacy, if any, in preventing infection, on the severity and length of infection, on side effects, etc. Such studies should still be ongoing.

But the FDA and CDC also dropped the ball on properly studying effects of masking, social distancing, lock-downs, etc. and on providing good quality hard data when they recommended these measures population-wide.

For those of you that considered the science faulty, the Nobel committee just smacked you. I guess the Nobel committee didn't listen to the right wing blitz on how bad the science was.

https://www.nobelprize.org/prizes/medicine/2023/press-release/

The science was definitely a game-changer, certainly worthy of recognition, and will hopefully revolutionize immune therapy against not only infections, but cancer as well.

The "blitz" (which you attribute to "right wing" but actually includes a large number of acclaimed scientists who are not politically motivated) is an objection to the hype used by the government, P****r, M*****a, et al. to market a product dishonestly.

With insufficient trial data to justify the claims of efficacy (for example, that the m**A C***d v*****e will prevent infection and prevent the spread), insufficient trial data to justify the recommendations on who should take it, with failure to recognize the immunity provided by actual infection, and reluctance to admit to the incidence of serious side effects.

So there's no complaint against the scientists who developed the technology. It's the manner in which this specific use of the technology was sold to an unsuspecting public.

And by the way, a Nobel prize nowadays carries significant political connotation. Moreso in the humanities where a man can earn the Peace Prize for doing nothing, but in the sciences as well.

Liked the old format also. I guess not enough members want to chime in to make a dent.

Actually there have been more than 40 posts (possibly 50 by now) about this very topic, containing quite a lot of discussion. UHHers have tried to explain that the UHH Forum has not changed. Only the Digest was changed.

Perhaps you missed all of these posts because you rely on the Digest, which is just a selection of topics on the Forum and not a complete list of new posts. Consider logging in to the Forum at www.UHH.com to see what you've been missing.

Been thinking on Affinity but have issues i need to iron out.

1. can it actually create a new image when i hit the save button?

I mean, i used to have a copy of corel back in 2004. I could open a file, draw a mustache on the cat. And save it as a new image with that name. Can i do that with affinity?

being able to save an image is big. I do not like, or use capture nxd because it "lets" me make a crop for instance, but saves it as a 3 kb file based on the original image that no other program can open.
Been thinking on Affinity but have issues i need t... (show quote)

You have two choices. Let's say you worked on an image named cat.jpg.
1. If you hit "save," Affinity Photo will create a file named cat.aphoto which saves your work where you left off; it is your original plus all the changes you made, that you can re-open and continue to tweak as you wish. Your original image, cat.jpg, remains unchanged.
2. If you hit "export" Affinity will save your modified image in the type of file you choose (jpg, tif, png, psd, pdf, etc.) and you can name your new image as you please. Affinity will warn you if you try to save it using the original file name. Thus your original image, cat.jpg, will remain unchanged unless you deliberately over-write it.

Has anyone found a quality book for Affinity Photo? If so, can you share the name please?

Thanks,
Bill

If you're still looking, this is not a book, but rather an online course of high caliber at a good price, worth considering:

Simon Foster's "Affinity Photo 2: Solid Foundations," 78 short lectures, totalling just under 15 hours in length, on sale for $9.99.

https://www.udemy.com/course/affinity-photo-2-solid-foundations/?utm_content=promo&utm_source=email-sendgrid&utm_medium=794572&utm_campaign=2023-09-30&utm_term=11847960&couponCode=SEP2023

I'm not affiliated with Foster or Udemy, but have benefited from his previous courses.

The Opill contains a single hormone, norgestrel, which is a form of progestin.

Norgestrel must not be taken by any woman who has, or has had, breast cancer.

For everyone else, per the Mayo Clinic website, the potential side-effects of taking norgestrel include:

increased risk of ectopic pregnancy
risk of developing ovarian cyst
change in vision
dizziness
heavy bleeding
severe headache
stomach pain, cramps, or bloating
white or brownish vaginal discharge
absent, missed, or irregular menstrual periods
bloating
dark urine
loss of appetite
menstrual changes
nausea or vomiting
stomach or pelvic discomfort, aching, or heaviness
stopping of menstrual bleeding
yellow eyes or skin
unusual tiredness or weakness
backache
blemishes on the skin
breast discomfort
increased appetite
nervousness
acne

Many of the above could be quite serious.

Furthermore, in discussing prescription norgestrel, Mayo Clinic also states:

"It is very important that your doctor check your progress at regular visits to make sure this medicine is working properly. Blood and urine tests may also be needed to check for unwanted effects.

Although you are using this medicine to prevent pregnancy, you should know that using this medicine while you are pregnant could harm your unborn baby."

So OTC Oprill will be an interesting experiment, the unsupervised use of norgestrel.

I know you were hoping for a derogatory commentary regarding your dreaded Republicans, but politics aside, this is a huge move for the FDA.

And that makes sense to you?
Actually, yes.

Trading a short list of posts on selected Topics (that you have not read previously) for an unlimited number (many pages) of post from all Topics is desirable?
As a matter of fact:
- The Digest contains new and old posts: the ones with the most activity. Therefore you may have already read the old ones. And therefore it does not include all new topics.
- If you have gone to "All Sections" and subscribed to the sections you like and unsubscribed to the sections that do not interest you, clicking on "New Sections" will show you all the new posts in the sections of your choice.
- In other words, you'll now have access to all new posts of interest to you and you will not miss any. For example, missing the 40+ previous posts about the Digest.
RonBoyd wrote:
And worse, does having to search for those posts which are listed periodically as "New" in very faded letters have some special attraction for you?
No need to search. Just clicking "New Posts" is actually quite easy.
RonBoyd wrote:
BTW, going to "Home" is only somewhat better in that you can select the specific Topic but still have to struggle through the tiresome search for the interspersed faded out "(New)" alert. Albeit a shortened list but must be repeated for each Topic.
Irrelevant if you just subscribe to your sections and simply click "New Sections."

None of that makes sense to me... please enlighten me.

So I am not alone. I used to look forward every morning to reading the UHH forum.

But you were not reading the UHH forum. You were reading the Digest, which is only a selection of the most active posts. Meaning that you were missing many, perhaps most, of the new posts that you would have seen if you were logging in to the forum.

I am not positive what a number of vultures is called, maybe a flock. Today I saw a whole bunch of vultures on top of a tower. I have never seen any on top of any tower in a town let along the number of these present.

The photos are not my best because of the distance to the tower but they are easily picked out.

Dennis

Nice captures. Since you speculated:

In your photo, the gathering of Turkey vultures would be called "a committee."

Had they been feeding on a corpse, they would be called "a wake."

I’ve given the new format a ride. I went in with an open mind. I haven’t a clue the reason for the new format, if you want to call it that, but I’m sure it has to do with an expectation of more money. However, the forum is no longer the fun and interest it had been for me for a decade. I hope Admin returns to the old and logical format.

Before you leave, have you tried logging in to uglyhedgehog.com and clicking "Newest Topics"?
As stated already many times, the forum has not changed. Only the Digest was changed.
