You should consider the Tamron 18-400 with your D500.

When I see postings like yours I wonder why the person ever bought the equipment they bought. Get a good camera bag that will hold your photo equipment and your carry on requirements. That’s the best suggestion I can make.

I’ve gotten really good results with the Tamron 18-400. It’s the most virtual lens you good ever get. I am pleasantly surprised at how good this lens is.

My photos have appeared here many times, I also post a lot on Facebook. You don’t have to take this so personally. Having said this I’m correct the Tamron is sharper than the Nikon. This does not mean Nikon doesn’t make excellent lenses, it just means in this case Tamron is better. BTW the photo of the Girl in the is a little soft.

You should try the Tamron G2, it’s better than the Nikon. It’s sharper.

I was faced with the same problem last Dec. I purchased the Tamron 70-200 f2.8 G2 . I have no regrets the Tamron G2 has been great. Most people think the Tamron is better than the Nikon.

This why zooms are good. Zoom lenses give you the versatility you can never get from a prime lens. The quality of zoom lenses has never been better.

Mirrorless: Z50.

DSLR: D500 or D7200 (only avail. used now, but better overall than the current D7500).

The D500 is available new , and probably will be for some time.

I was faced with almost the situation a couple of years ago. I went with the D500 and have had no regrets. I didn’t want I should have spent a little more to get best.

IMO, the 18-400, being a lower resolving lens, the limiting factor for you is mostly the lens. Going from 16 to 24MP may only reveal the limits of the lens and not realize what you are looking for - just my educated opinion.

I’ve gotten pretty good results from the 18-400. I found if you can stop down a little it helps a lot. I must admit that I have been pleasantly surprised by the good results I shoot with a Nikon D500.
