I photograph high school football and the season is approaching. I want the AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8E FL ED VR Lens but it has been on back-order for months with no definite time for availability. I have researched the Sigma Sport and reviews are pretty good. But do I hold out for Nikkor or take the Sigma. My currant lens that I have used for years is the Nikkor 70-200 G2ED and has some issues that need repair. Any suggestions? Thanks

Both the Sigma and Tamron lens of that same zoom and f2,8 produce very good results and I don't think anyone could tell which lens was used by looking at a picture anyway. Since the Nikon is not available use what you have to!

The Sigma lens is also on backorder at B&H don't know about other retailers.
I sold my my Sigma 70-200 and purchased the AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8E FL ED VR Lens and it's great. My son did like my Sigma 70-200 I personally did not have a good fit with the Sigma lenses that I had and sold both. This is not a criticism of Sigma it just didn't work for me.

Do you shoot sports? What didn't work for you? Just curious, for the difference in price I do not want to make a mistake. Seeing you had them both

You could check with Nikon to see what it would take to bring your current 70-200 up to snuff. It's not a bad lens, as you know.

I am guessing the question is for me, it was also the processing model of Sigma 70-200. Putting my finger on exactly why is hard explain, I just personally did not like how the AF reacted. Changing AF speed in camera was giving me no satisfaction to work through AF, D750, D810 or after D850 purchase. This is not a product name thing I have and use 3 Tamron lenses along with Nikkor. I only photograph my grandchildren in sports activities.

Thanks, I understand completely and that helps me also. I have a D500. Names really do not mean anything to me just so I get what works for me and what I pay for!

You'll get the Sigma, but still watch for the Nikon, then when it is available you will buy the Nikon, then take a beating on the Sigma, making the Nikon that much more expensive. However, if you are getting paid, the beating may be an annoyance rather than a painful experience. The Sigma is pretty good, but it's not a Nikon FL

wvgal, I went with the Sigma 70-200 sport on my Canon 90D and have gotten excellent results of my grandson's football games. Completely happy with all my sigma lens.

A few thoughts:

1) For a Nikon user, Sigma zoom lenses can feel awkward because the zoom rotation is opposite from the Nikon standard.

2) Have you investigated the refurbished/used offerings? With many people moving to Z bodies, F-mount lenses should be available.

3) I agree with the general feeling that the Sigma is a fine lens, but you will probably be happiest in the long run by holding out for the Nikon lens.

Good luck,

I have shot some high school sports and found the 70-200 to be a good lens depending on where you stand relative to the action. For close shots it is fine but if the action is in the middle of the field something with 300 to 400mm may be needed to fill the frame. When I shot high school baseball I had to shoot from a given spot past first base and deeded a 500mm lens. Have you thought of renting a lens for a game while you wait for the lens you want to buy?

Knowing how Nikkor lenses are made, I'd hold out and get the one you want.

Thank you! Yes I tried a refurb from Nikon and was not pleased with it because of it's performance, and they did not hesitate to take it back.

Thanks. There is no where around here to rent lenses. And the 70-200 is great for my situation.
