Are you aware of the new I.D. requirements? Your Driver's License must have a Mandatory Security emblem on the Face of your License, in Michigan it is a Star, provided thru your Secretary of State government agency check with your state.
I have not heard of any particular new Camera or Photography requirements, but there may be some new ones I certainly hope not, such a hassle getting thru Airport Security.

just a note -these regs don't go into effect til Sep 2020. Global entry card meets the requirement

here in WA they've sent out postcards announcing the change

rumors are usually just that - without actual references, they're worthless

first, airlines are NOT really tightening the rules - more people are carrying on bigger bags, well in excess of the so-called rules

2nd, i travel frequently, mostly international - my camera stays in its bag, with lens attached, w battery inside and extra batteries in the bag's pouch - never had any question and have never seen anyone else being hassled

I am not a lawyer, but if there is a legal parallel between copyright and patent law, it may be legal. As I understand patent law, if you make an improvement on an existing patent, it may be legal. The painting could be considered as an improvement on the photograph. If there is a lawyer out there please weigh in!

no, the 2 are very different - basically copyright covers the expression if an idea; patent covers the idea itself & is much more limiting

for this example tho, the photographer is clearly wrong - they went against the rules of the submission - in no way did she actually 'take' the picture - else i could submit my mona lisa pix that i 'took'

first, the military says a volunteer army better fits their needs

i'm in favor of compulsory national service, with a choice of fulfillment; however, we don't need to require that for basic rights such as voting, etc (and if it's required would be moot anyway)

instead, I would continue benefits such as GI bill for college, home loans, VA benefits, etc. for military only. I was a CO during the Vietnam era and did my alternate service, but would never compare that with those who served in the military.

another inducement would be to have teachers, doctors, lawyers et al work in underserved areas after college in return for some reduction in loans

everything recorded by my camera is a capture; if I post-process it's still a capture; i'm more concerned w the aesthetics than technical terminology

no, each member state maintains its own military, and more confusing, some are not part of NATO, and some European NATO members aren't part of the EU

an interesting Netflix offering is 'Nobel' about a Norwegian officer accused of war crime in Afghanistan

Do you know about a string monopod? They actually work to stabilize a camera. I recently made one when I was not able to bring my tripod on a trip. You get an eyelet bolt with a 1/4-20 thread and tie a piece of rope to the eyelet. You thread the bolt into the tripod socket on the bottom of the camera. Stand on the end of the rope and pull up a little to put tension in the rope. The tension stabilizes the camera. I think it's better than using a monopod.

you can get even more stability by extending the camera to get 3 pt support from the straps & monopod

i travel frequently & recentlyh downgraded to a lumix FZ-1000 w a 25-400 lens - for my shakyhands i get better results than i did w my dslr

can't believe how many folks always say 'no use for a long lens' -- esp'ly on a cruise it lets you get reasonable shore shots, and in cities, great for detail you can't otherwise approach

also i use a monopod all the time w no hassles to anyone - i only extend it one length and brace it in my camera bag, giving 3 pt stability - i can bracket for HDR w no problems

you'd still only be as good as the original video -- by making stills you might get some improvement by running the stills thru topaz ai gigapixel, but that's an enormous amount of work, for probably little improvement

making video from stills is straightforward with Premium or similar video editing software

despite the pilings we've had a number of ferry accidents, including dropping a car while docked - the most notorious was a grounding when the captain took the boat too close to shore to show off for his girlfriend. then there was the skipper of a 500 ft freighter that hit & destroyed the bridge to west seattle. in an unrelated incident several years later, his wife shot him, then dismembered him with an axe.

Oh, and take some Vapor Rub because over the years their poop doesn't deteriorate, and the odor is terrible! One of our guides told us that finding penguin colonies is easy: just follow your nose!)

actually after a few minutes you don't really notice the smell

on our trip we had 10' swells on the way over the Drake passage and lots of folks never came out of their cabins, on the return it was so smooth they called it 'Drake Lake'

they're pilings, usually helping to guide the ferry and stabilize it when docked; these may be from an abandoned landing

you can also find them individually on rivers where they're used to tie up log rafts on their way to sawmills

at the temperatures you'll likely see, you'll have little problem - I commonly carry my camera inside my ski jacket when downhilll skiing at temps down to the teens with no problems.

we encountered no snow on landings except for one time where we climbed a small hill with steps kicked by the guides. ground was gravel or small rocks.

I concur there's little need for tripod -- you don't have much time ashore, so better to shoot more & sort onboard. I do use a shortened monopod, planted in my camera bag, steady enough to bracket for HDR

Non photographic question. We are in 2020 going on a SilverSeas Alaskan Expedition Cruise to Alaska. Did the cruise company provide the waterproof boots or did you have to bring your own? Thanks

i haven't done the Alaska itinerary that requires boots

in Antarctica, all the ships take a very pro-active approach to ecosystem preservation - so before you board the zodiacs, AFAIK all furnish wellies, and you step thru a pan of disinfectant, and repeat on your return (to minimize the chances of cross island contamination).

you should get a pair of rainpants, as there can be a lot of spray in the zodiacs. if you forget, the onboard shops usually stock them.
