Does anybody know the current air travel security rules regarding cameras in carry-on luggage? I have heard rumors that rules may have been considerably tightened. Firsthand info will be appreciated.
Thanks.

Yes, I need an Update, Flying to Florida December 16tb.
Take them with you, leave the battery in. Batteries can't be checked and have to be carried on, with some sort of protection over the contacts (manufacturer cover, electrical tape, etc..)
You will get accurate info on the TSA.GOV website. They be the folks who make the rules...

I just got back 1 month ago from a trip to the Southeast coast. I am TSA PreCheck, which everybody who flies should be for no other reason than you can keep your shoes on in the checkpoint, so my experience may be different. Even if you fly once or twice per year, PreCheck is totally worth it for the $85 for the 5-year cost.
I leave lenses disconnected from the camera body, have batteries in a Tenba nylon duo case, and a 13" laptop in the case's sleeve, the small size Peak Design Everyday Messenger. It just rolled through the x-ray, did not have to take any of the camera equipment out, but did have to put the laptop in a separate tray.
Its not TSA, but the Airlines that have tightened rules. Make sure your bag meets the new dimensional requirements, 9 inches x 14 inches x 22 inches, and that you get in line early while there still is overhead space. I paid for preboarding for each link to make sure that there was overhead bins available. Worse case and this depends on the Gate Agent, you have to gate check your carryon which is put in a separate section of the hold and you get it back as you deplane on the jetway.

Just got off a plane yesterday. My camera had the battery in and spares were in a protective case with the contacts covered. The carryon was my regular camera bag with two lenses and no one gave me a second look. They were more concerned with my titanium knee than the camera bag.

I've had no issues flying domestic. Every flight in China, I had to take everything out of my bag (every lens, every body, every battery).

You will probably get the best and most accurate first hand knowledge by contacting TSA.
Just flew two legs there, two legs back from Egypt, same info as already mentioned. Leave battery in camera in case requested to turn it on (neither of mine), carry extras on-board. I have individual plastic cases with all in a clear plastic bag (or use ziplock). London was stricter on general checking, not the cameras & lens. What travelers don't ever know is if security has temperarily been increased at a particular airport due to some data/threat received. I assume that was the case at Heathrow, when it was tighter than their normal tight security.
You guys are a great bunch, and thank you for all the information to help me find what I wanted to know. Now I'm ready to pack. Well, not quite - flight is in 3 weeks. THANKS AGAIN!

I fly fairly frequently and have a good carryon which fits my camera body, a couple lenses, and various camera paraphernalia. My laptop also fits in this roll aboard. As mentioned above, TSA pre-check is worth every dime. Most airports allow my laptop to stay in the camera roll aboard while going through security. If I happen to be on a small aircraft and have to gate check my roll aboard, I always have a foldable bag in the back pouch of my bag, where the backpack straps are stored, into which I place my laptop, camera, lithium batteries and anything else I can't live without for the duration of the flight. I can usually find space in the overhead or under the seat in front of me for my "personal item" and now the extra, smaller bag. I haven't flown with the new 200-600 Sony lens yet but I would sure hate to take it out of the padded bag. We'll cross that bridge later, I'm sure. I have flown in Europe and the US and have had no trouble so far, but as others have said, there are rumors of changes to come. Good luck and safe travels. Loretto
rumors are usually just that - without actual references, they're worthless
first, airlines are NOT really tightening the rules - more people are carrying on bigger bags, well in excess of the so-called rules
2nd, i travel frequently, mostly international - my camera stays in its bag, with lens attached, w battery inside and extra batteries in the bag's pouch - never had any question and have never seen anyone else being hassled
