Any lens I have over 135mm is hand carried. I know a Nikor 400mm f/2.8 has strap fittings on the lens. I guess that's a suggestion that hanging it on the camera body is not a great idea.

This makes sense -- especially with the lighter, cropped cameras (e.g., D3XXX, D5XXX, D7XXX) and heavier lenses. The lens may weigh more than the camera so the stress will be on the camera mount. The plastic lenses would be lighter than the metal ones.

I carry mine in a sling bag so the camera is on top of or resting next to the camera (depending on orientation).

I just got mine and the first thing I noticed was there was no User's Manual ... actually when I looked a bit closer, there WAS a User's manual ... more like a pamphlet. The User's Manual is 70 pages and the first 15 pages are "Notices"; things like the battery may get hot, before taking important pictures, take a test shot " ... to insure that the camera is functioning normally" / "Do not use while walking or using a vehicle". The usual crap that is always written and never actually read. So now we're down to 55 pages. There are 5 pages showing the parts of the camera with no references to what page will give more detailed information (because there are none). Following the parts of the camera are such items as ATTACHING THE STRAP / CHARGING THE BATTERY / INSERTING THE BATTERY / REMOVING THE BATTERY / INSERTING MEMORY CARDS / REMOVING MEMORY CARDS / ATTACHING A LENS .
At page 36, we get to SET UP; at page 38 SET UP is finished. Now we come to "Basic Photography and Playback".
I think I've made my point. I grant that anyone owning the Z9 (myself included) should have a pretty good understanding of setting up a camera BUT with all of the bells and whistles that this camera offers and for the price that is paid, an owner's manual should have been included. In fairness to Nikon, there is a 914 page Reference Guide ON LINE, which is really an Owner's Manual. That's 914 pages ALL IN ENGLISH! Unless you print it, it would be difficult to take on a trip with you. I'm going to guess that there will be "Third Party" manuals soon ... I certainly hope so!! Excuse me, I have to attempt to set the camera up. Please don't write about how lucky I am to have the camera, I know it and that doesn't change the fact that this camera came with virtually no instructions (when compared to say, the D810 or D850).

D5600: Same Issue.
I found printed copies on e-Bay for around 35.00, but they were 8.5 X 11 inches and I believe the .pdf file is 5 X 7.

So I downloaded it and took it to a printer (Staples, OfficeMax -- don't remember which) thinking if someone is printing them oversize I can get it done actual size for the same amount or cheaper. This would even give me a choice of bindings, covers, and paper. But they would not print it.

Does anyone know how to get an actual size copy of these Nikon manual files printed?

Considering upgrading from my Nikon D5100 as my every day camera to the D5600. Already have more than a half dozen lenses in the DX format for the D5100. Would greatly appreciate any input the group might have.

I believe Nikon has said that the 5600 is the end of the 5000 series, but it is still in production. As far as I have heard, they will continue the 3000 and 7000 series.

I do agree that mirrorless is the future, but I also believe the prices will drop and capabilities we cannot imagine today will be included. Look at the evolution from film. The medium will still be digital and I do not need 45 megapixels. Right now, I see mirrorless as the answer if it fits your budget, your required capabilities, and your priorities. 5600 fit all three -- FOR ME.

I chose the 5600 for the fully articulated live view as the main determining factor over the 3500. With each series, 3000, 5000, 7000 you get a few more features, but you have to learn to use them. It is rarely mentioned, but you can do time-lapse with the 5600, but not the 3500.

I have moved from .jpg to raw and am shooting more on manual. I still have a lot to learn to utilize all the 5600 capabilities. So it has been a very good fit -- FOR ME.

As someone above said, list your needs and the 5100 capabilities. You may get another DSLR or you may wait to move to mirrorless.

I thank all of you for your thoughtful responses with solutions, many of which I had not thought of. I believe a LED cube light that attaches to the hotshoe will work well. I did not know they existed. Because the light will be directional to the subject I'm shooting (rock art), the light does not have to shine 360 degrees, which would be the case if the lighting device had to sit on the ground. It also allows both hands to be free to operate the camera. There are places where I will be lying on my back shooting rock art on low ceilings.

I got the LItra and it has a magnet on it to attach to surfaces. I did not want the magnet, so I got their drone version, (same but no magnet) for same price. With or Without magnet -- you choice.

I love to write with a fountain pen, but email took away letter writing completely and bills are all paid electronically nowadays. Now if I fill a fountain pen the ink dries up and clogs the point because I don't use it enough.

I still sign letters, and I take notes while watching webinars, and I flush out the pen with warm water every month.

It is a bit of trouble, but worth it.

Now, with cursive, it's my encoder.

You might consider Litra or Lume cube. I like the Litra, but it is white light only. Lume allows you to set the color temperature if that is something you want to consider.

I had a Parker like that about 40 years ago and loved it. It was a gift and I discovered the joy of writing with one. It slowed me down a bit and I thought a little more as I wrote. I became more careful about shaping my letters also. Today, we have gotten rid of cursive -- but it can be a code among those of us who know.

I did not realize how valuable fountain pens could be and left it on my desk unattended for a couple of hours.

Later, I got lucky and found someone getting rid of a broken Mont Blanc, I sent it back to the manufacturer for repair ($86.) and have treasured/guarded it ever since.

I am a videographer with photography. I had a video client of mine request a set of photos of an event. They requested just general photos with little or no posing with intent to populate their website with new images. I took over 100 images of the 2 hour event. It was semi low light. I used my Sony a7iii with Sigma 24-75 1.4 lens and Sony a6500 with Sigma 56mm 1.4 lens. The photos came out fine or so I thought. The client questioned why some of the pictures were so blurry. The pictures were actually quite sharp but my style is to shoot subjects with a generous depth of field. The client didn’t understand the bokah. The client apparently expected full focus. First mistake, there was no discussion pryor to the shoot. Their contact person just called and asked me to come out. I had taken pictures for them before, that went into a video piece. They had seen my work. Secondly, I know the client is always right and its my fault to correct. My question is simple, I guess. Bokah, no bokah , plain…are their specific names for styles of shooting to clearly communicate to clients about expected results. I went with my style but could have easily gone to 8 or 11 to get what they expected.

The author raises an interesting point.

Photography is a form of communications. In college (long before personal computers), I took a course on "The Writer's Control of Tone". During my military career, I read numerous articles on how to write point papers, studies, proposals, etc.) A lot of this was focused on how to present information, including attending Tufte's seminars on how to effectively present information graphically and words not to use (e.g., exacerbate). Stephen Few also has a several books on this presenting information. I have collected some sources on choice of words -- use negative words when describing the opposing view and positive words when describing my proposal.

These articles show up in all topics. One example would be "The Evolution of Cute" in the September/October 2018 issue of Virginia Wildlife Magazine (https://dwr.virginia.gov/wp-content/uploads/media/Sept_Oct_2018_080618_FINAL1_lowres.pdf).

I have such articles filed in various directories (e.g., writing, psychology, wildlife photography, persuasion). Now, I may create a new directory or sub-directory to group them.

Interesting...

I am completely disgusted with the bigotry and r****m unfortunately laid bare in the Sastry thread.
UHH is different than many if not most photography forums that I have seen. While posts and comments can vary significantly from photography--in many sites; none include more sarcasm and direct personal attacks than in UHH. In fact, other sites generally don't allow any at all. I continue to come back in spite of this; as there are so many members here who not only are respectful to others; but are an asset to the community.
But now.....the administrators of UHH need to step up and not allow their site to be the vehicle for this hatred.
Don't use 'free speech' for your reason to say nothing. This is 'your site'. You set the tone. You make the rules. And it is your responsibility to create an atmosphere that is responsible and respectful.
At the least, you should have immediately stepped in to let the poster know (and all UHH members watching this thread) that his 'point of view' is not welcome on your site. And, if he continues, in any manner to spew this h**e, he will be immediately suspended from this site and possibly banned.
You need to step up and establish a minimum of moral integrity at UHH.
Anything less condones what has taken place.

I have not observed any r****m or bigotry on the forums I participate in.

When I first joined, I was a bit "thin-skinned" on some blunt remarks -- but I bit my tongue. In an intelligent and respectful discussion, we can often learn more from those with whom we disagree than from those who are stating what we already know. Now those authors have become my most trusted sources. I still do not agree with them all the time. But "blunt" is clearly and concisely stated.

On other media, I have found that I could block out a few extreme right and left wingers and never see any of it. Both are spewing h**e and neither is any better than the other. They feed on each another.

I don't know what the Sastry thread is and from your remarks, I am not going to waste my time on such drivel.

No -- I don't go to the attic. it's good to have a place for that as it keeps it out of the other forums. I go to the topics I am interested in.

Yep. Zeiss lens wipes seem to be available at most big box stores. They are safe and effective.

Found them at Sam's Club and BJ's, but not at Costco.

There is also a separate product -- Zeiss Anti-Fog wipes. Not the same thing.

One question -- how do you carry a few in your bag instead of the whole box?

ISO quick release tripod that easily allows user to use the lever system, not the knob, for the camera to be held on tripod. I am not a professional, but have some arthritis in my hands and the knob system on my tripod is not the best for me. Needs to be lightweight, too.
$250-300 limit.
TIA

There are two families of Quick Release devices.
Manfrotto RC2
Swiss ACRA

Most name brand tripods will probably come with one or the other. Pick your tripod and go with the default release or pick your release and get a tripod that matches.

I would not put an adapter in between the tripod and the camera as that will raise the center of gravity which may or may not be a concern.

I do not know that one is really any better than the other, but I prefer the Manfrotto 323 which attaches to the tripod and includes a 200PL-14 Plate that attaches to the camera. It and costs about $60. I am sure there is a ACRA equivalent which should cost about the same. There are lots of fakes on Internet for a lot less.

There are plenty of people on here who prefer the ACRA,

I strongly recommend going to a camera store to get the "feel" of each. I think all stores will have multiple devices in both brands in stock.

Just pick one family and stay with it or you may often find yourself using one and needing the other.

Don't carry any sharp objects. I had a 2" pen knife and they went bonkers.
