Glazers in Seattle has a good variety depending on what you are looking for.

Roberts Camera had a couple, possibly Domke brand, if that helps.

Based on what the OP wrote, I would agree with the earlier post to match the flash f-stop to the camera. I say that based the fact that current flash units, if match correctly, work with the camera to actually set flash output power. But that is the catch. Current digital cameras are designed to work with matched equipment to determine power needs.

If using an older flash the Guide numbers can be best way to go. But I have had many local pro's tell me not to use the older flashes with modern digital equipment. The flash power output will damage the camera over time.

I have been a happy user for about 10 years. My site is heavily customized, but still easy to use.

This is a great b/w. I would like to go to Germany to investigate some family heritage. Want to also take in the castles.

Exquisite light and details in the lower half. Huge impact for me with your stunning dog. The section of very white sky is worth a bit of editing IMO, so that it isn't so prominent. I'm going to pm you some thoughts.

If you are interested in doing more with b&w, check Ben Long's training video on lynda.com. One thing he stresses (as do all b&w how-to): it's all about "form, shape, texture, volume, highlight and shadow (contrast)."

lynda.com may be free through your county library system. It is in Yakima!

I also put together a page on UHH with links from older discussion/share topics you might be interested in browsing:

One benefit to looking through those over buying books (which I strongly recommend also, even old books on film are applicable to digital black and white composition) is if the user is still active on UHH, you could contact them

Shooting in raw and using a robust editor, such as Nik Silver Efex, will give you the most control over tones and also dodging/burning to draw the viewer's eye through the image. A master of both subtle and bold light/dark tonal ranges in processing is UHH user Graham Smith.

Three of my favorites of his:

Thank you to all the vets on this. The pictures are great, please post more. I have a brother who served in Nam twice but does not talk about it. I know his second tour was a with a tank retrival unit. His first would have been some type of maintenance unit but don't know what. Thanks to all of you for serving.

For portrait work, I see 850's used a lot. 750 is the most commonly used or talked about here. I would agree with those who suggest renting a camera. Probably the best way to figure out what you really need.

So to move from dx to fx, in Nikon would you start at 620, 750, 810 or 850 (5 is totlly out of discussion).
I have an offer of a job but for some reason they do not want dx. It is portrait work. Please don't grill me on why fx instead of dx, I know for a lot of shots you can compensate, that is just their preference. I know there is $ in lens changes but there may be comp for that but not for the body. They actually will loan you lenses for a time.

Thank you for looking and responding. Three different Presbyterian churches got together and had a picnic and church service in a local public park.

I'm really not that interested in finding out who the kid or his parent's are. I'm just curious about the law.

Need to make a point here, the user states 3 churches got to together and they are using a Public Park. Later he states signs were put up saying all are welcome. The problem here not legality, it is ethics. He is legal because the event is occurring in a known public venue and expectations of privacy go out the window. Ethically, I would not publish in any format with discussing with the parents. They may like the photo but not want it published for many reasons and to go against that is what is wrong. They may hate the photo and order you to destroy the photo. You should and promptly. Now, if an event occurs that makes it news worthy, that crosses another line. It then falls to the publication involved. I remember covering a tornado strike at a mobile park. Best shot I made was of a 6 year old holding a doll walking back to the front of the park. Was it newsworthy, yes, it told a story. Was it published, yes. Would I have taken it otherwise probably not without finding the parents. Many photographers now days throw ethics out the window and don't understand why they get sued later or worse go to jail. The real question is ethics. And as for working other events, have the churches involved sign a contract to say you are the event photographer. They should also publish that an "Event Photographer" will be present. You should get a vest or badge stating the same.

The B&W of #1 is great, does it justice. The series is great as B&W.
