"nobody will ever want to steal it"

I laughed out loud at this! It is an awesome camera, and starts a conversation almost every time I use it.

"they refused to answer"

No one other than Nikon can answer that question for many cameras and lenses... and that statement comes directly from Nikon. The S/N prefixes that rgrenaderphoto refers to do not apply to all Nikon cameras / lenses according to Nikon. I sent them a D810 for service and they could only tell me it was "not from the US" but could not ID the actual origin country that would service it (they said it "may be" Japan or "possibly" Korea. According to Nikon, there is no generally available database or info source for other companies (like KEH or MPB for example) to ID the country of origin of a piece of gear.

It's in MPB's best interest to refer you back to Nikon in that instance.

I have two digital kits - one for birding and one for lansdscape. I decide which I'm gonna do and bring that kit. If I am going to do landscape and want to shoot film, I'll bring that along too. For big trips, I may bring it all, but in general, I know what I'll be shooting before I leave the house.

I picked up a Nikon D3 for $150 about a year ago… likely doesn’t work I was told. Works fine and just needed a $19 battery door. 64k clicks and even had the box and original contents. Not typical but it does happen. Caveat emptor as they say tho… and always be safe when doing an in-person Craigslist transaction. I generally meet in a crowded parking lot during business hours to be safe.

You might want to see what KEH can do. They fixed my D810 earlier this year (it is a non-US model so Nikon would not repair it) and did an outstanding job.

+1 for Gabapentin. I got Neuropathy from chemo as well... specifically the Oxaliplatin. I've tried a few things but Gabapentin seems to do best. It does not get rid of it, but helps me manage it.

I almost always shoot in manual mode when shooting landscapes. Occasionally, I will use aperture priority (AP) with auto-ISO, but I prefer manual. I also shoot a bit of film on an old school Mamiya, so I am used to doing things manually. I can, however, see the benefit of using AP with landscapes. Use whatever works for the situation, and if your employer says "AP", then AP it is to keep your paycheck ;)

There are many ways to get to the same outcome.

I would recommend either the Nikon 200-500mm or the Sigma 150-600mm. I use the Sigma Contemporary with my D500 and it shoots fabulous images. It is light enough to hand hold, but I recommend a shoulder strap for comfort. I'd second Thomas's recommendation, the D500 is the ultimate Nikon DSLR for birds.

I shoot with a Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8 on my D810. It is a fantastic lens, but you will need a special adapter if you want to use filters... it needs 150x150mm filters. I can recommend some good filters if you go that direction.

I've had a similar situation... use a filter wrench. Works like a charm. They are available at your favorite camera store most likely... Igot mine at B&H.
