I'm new to this so try not to bruise my ego.
I fell with my camera and the UV Filter was the only casualty. However, it jumped the thread in the area it hit the metal bleacher.
I've tried lots of stuff to no avail. The rubber can opener, channel locks, rubber band. Anyone had any luck getting the metal threaded ring off once it jumped a thread? The filter was completely shattered, so it is just the ring. I've thought of several things, but they all involve ruining the threads on the lens, which I'm trying to avoid. All ideas are welcome. Thx in advance

You might try cooling just the filter ring with dry ice.

I got one stuck once. Only option was to send to Nikon for repair. About $600. The camera and lens came back looking brand new.

Best of luck,
Mike

You could use a dremel with the thinest metal blade and very carefully cut the ring in 2 places about 3/4 " apart not cutting into the lens threads. Then a needle nose plier should break the piece out and free up to remove.

I had something similar, only it was an adapter. The more I grasped around the ring, the tighter it stuck. I finally got a pair of needle nose pliers and grasped the inside edge and turned. Came off like a piece of cake. Who'd have thought!

Had something similar happen with a filter. Took it to a local guy for repair and he cut it off.

Just watch out, Dremels can get away from you. If cutting, I'd certainly put a barrier between the front element and the cutting wheel.

We’re it me, I’d grasp the ring with a pair of pliers. While applying twisting pressure counter clockwise, I’d turn the leading edge of the pliers downward (inward). This might reduce the diameter of the filter ring just enough to free it.

I’d also stuff rags, a plastic lens cap or something over the front element for protection. Just in case.

Since the filter is ruined, get two pairs of square nose pliers and grab the filter ring with them 180 degrees apart. Have someone else hold the camera/lens and twist. That should give you a much better grip than channel locks around the outside

Unless you are used to using a dremel or flex shaft grinder, you may do more damage to the lens. I would consider using a jewelers saw with a 00 blade with the teeth facing down. You will have much better control over how far you cut. Don’t cut all the way into the lens grooves. Once close, use a diagonal clipper and needle nose pliers to break the circle and pull out the ring.
