I fell with my camera and the UV Filter was the only casualty. However, it jumped the thread in the area it hit the metal bleacher.
I've tried lots of stuff to no avail. The rubber can opener, channel locks, rubber band. Anyone had any luck getting the metal threaded ring off once it jumped a thread? The filter was completely shattered, so it is just the ring. I've thought of several things, but they all involve ruining the threads on the lens, which I'm trying to avoid. All ideas are welcome. Thx in advance

I used to own a camera store and I used to take a small pair of pliers, grab the ring in a perpendicular fashion, twist the filter ring toward the center of the lens (obviously taking care not to hit the front element with the pliers). Once it has turned into a noticeable Pac Man shape, take it off the lens. This sounds brutal, but I've done it hundreds of times successfully.

Just curious if this has been solved and if so, how?
Thanks to all for all the great suggestions. I'll start with the ones that have the least probability of damaging the lens. And if none of them work, Rick, I'll be getting in touch with you. Thanks again all!!!

Filter wrench made to fit the size of the filter use on on the filter the other on the lens they have always worked for me
Just be glad it was a broken filter rather than a broken front element. There's a big difference between $30 and $300
I remove stuck filters all the time. I have special vices I use on a lot of them and in the worst case scenario, (B+W Filters), I will have to make a relief cut in the filter frame ring. Most of the time though, I can use special techniques to remove a stuck filter. It usually depends on if it still has glass in it.
Remove the glass, take a pair of pliers, and bend the ring into the lens area. Then you can remove the ring. I've done this on many lenses (when I was in the camera business) and they were fine. Needless to say, be very careful to not scratch the lens.

If you want to handle it yourself, and feel competent to do so, I would try the following
Put a SINGLE drop of penetrating oil in 2 places on the filter ring/ lens thread intersection
With a jeweler's saw cut a notch in the filter ring halfway through, then a second notch 180 degrees from that.
Use a vacuum to get ALL the shavings
You now have a place to put a thin piece of steel like the BACK of a hacksaw blade across both notches.
This is basically a spanner wrench with lots of leverage, see if you can get some movement in either direction.
Don't over do it.
If that does not work cut the grooves deeper and repeat. You do not want to damage the lens. You can try cooling the ring but I wouldn't use dry ice, it is TOO cold too close to the front element.
Wear magnifying glasses and use good light you can try to cut down to the lens, but remember there are still threads engaged BELOW the front edge of the lens.
The likelihood is that the lens threads are already damaged, to what extent I do not know--- it could be minor.....or not.
The final thing to try would be to cut a third groove 1/4" away from one of the others, and try to GENTLY use needle nose pliers to rock that section back and forth. If you get that out the rest will come out easily.
If you are not comfortable doing this, Don't
Good Luck
